2009 Honor Roll of VolunteersFood for the SoulBy Corinne Peterson, Volunteer Services CoordinatorWe each know how important it is to nourish our physical bodies. We have been taught from early age the value of three squaremeals a day and the outline of the nutrition pyramid: meat and beans, fruit, dairy, vegetables, grains, fats.I want to tell you a story that helps us learn about the importance of feeding the soul. Over a year-and-a-half ago, I was approachedto find a volunteer visitor for one of our healthcare residents who had just received notification that she only had a few months oflife. She was depressed and had given up on trying for quality of life. She refused to eat or drink and had decided that “no onecared.” She had no family locally, and the only persons in her life were her caregivers (important but not meeting every need).I approached a volunteer who had gone through our Palliative Care training and asked if she would reach out. The initial visits werechallenging; the resident didn’t respond, she didn’t want to do anything. I advised the volunteer not to get discouraged but to beconsistent and to continue trying. Within the month, the volunteer reported back that the resident agreed to let her take her outsidefor a walk. The next visit, she reported, “We went to play bingo,” then, “We went to church services Wednesday.” I saw the light go on in theeyes of the volunteer as she was seeing the evidence of her attempts making a difference. The resident was eating and caring again. The volunteer would report back that she was upset with me because I was away and not able to visit last week. The bond offriendship was established. Our volunteer would bring in bouquets of flowers from her garden. She knew some favorite goodies and would bring them in asspecial treats. They talked about their families. The volunteer learned that the resident still had an older sister living in Florida. When our volunteer went on vacation to Florida last winter, she took the time to look up the sister and visit with her. She made theconnection between the two and now spends time sending greetings and continuing to provide her friend with contact with herfamily member. One day in my office, I asked this volunteer if she ever imagined the turn-around she witnessed? She smiled and said, “Can youimagine ‘only a few months (to live)’ and she is now over a year-and-a-half past their predictions?”“It’s because you fed her soul!” I responded.I watch visitors come to our campus not truly realizing their impact on the lives they touch. Can you place value on the holding of ahand when there isn’t anyone else there to hold the hand? What about being the person who makes a wish come true: “I’d like aburger from McDonald’s or Burger King” – our volunteer visitors make it come true. What about those visitors who are here often enough that the residents recognize them and tell them their life stories, even the hurtsinflicted over the years? It’s Psychology 101. What burdens are lifted or lightened because of your listening ears and caring hearts?Every one of the volunteers who pass through my office speak of receiving more from the visit than what was given.Every day volunteers minister to the physical needs of our campus. I wonder if you realize that by meeting the physical needs, youare “instrumental in feeding the soul” as well?Thank you for visiting, playing bingo, going shopping, delivering mail, baking, filling water pitchers, escorting and hundreds of otherservices. Did you know each of you are feeding my soul too?2009 Volunteer Statistics76,212.67 Individual hours (including 1100.65 episodic hours)3,987 Group hours80,199.67 Total hours of volunteer service1,222 Total number of unduplicated volunteers serving2
