Welcome to our newsletter designed to keep you
up to date with all that is happening at our clinic.
The beginning of this
month will be the handing
over of practice principals
at Cherrybrook.
Our incoming Practice
Principal is Kim McDonald.
She will bring to the
practice exactly what is
required. Kim has a keen
interest and expertise in
exercise prescription and
correct performance of
movement. She is pilates
trained and is currently
studying the McKenzie
regime. She has post
graduate accreditation in
sports physiotherapy and
has special interests in
hand and upper limb
rehabilitation. She has
given sports coverage,
predominantly in Rugby
League and Swimming.
Robyn would like to
thank her faithful staff for
efforts made when
circumstances were
challenging (post fire
destruction of the practice
just after options were
taken with HNA and the
many moves that were
made). She will be leaving
in June for a well
deserved overseas trip.
Jessica is currently gaining
experience in on- field
support for soccer, AFL,
Netball and is very
enthused. She enjoyed
the Health Networks workshop
presented by Julie
Godfrey and found it very
beneficial. She is currently
playing water polo and
attending gym and
swimming.
Jackie continues to
increase her knowledge in
Hydrotherapy but is
preparing for 3-4 weeks
overseas trip whilst her
husband is keynote
speaking in London for
Olympic readiness in
construction.
Simone is keen to do a
Mulligan’s Institute course
and to continue to build
up her clientele at this
practice. Her interests in
basketball have resulted in
enthusiasm, being
undefeated this season.
We have just completed
the current mentoring
scheme. Our students are
always keen and diligent.
Jackie does the bulk of the
management of our
students required
education. We recently
had one of our local GP’s
sons come here for work
experience. We enjoy
doing this and put a lot of
time into these
enthusiastic young people.
Pei-Jiun our 4 th year
physio student continues
to study hard and enjoy
her placements in various
hospitals throughout NSW.
She works with us on Saturdays
and holidays and
she is looking forward to
her 9 week break where
she hopes to travel.
Kerusha our back room
assistant continues to
further her massage
qualifications while
assisting Robyn when
needed and has recently
attended an accredited
acupuncture course.
continues to do a great
job supporting Vicki and
they both would like to
welcome Gai Bedford who
has been with us 3
months now and fitted
into our team very well.
What do you do if
you feel sudden
pain in your back
while lifting?
1. Report the
incident if you are at
work.
2. Rest in whatever
position is comfortable
for you. This
may be standing,
lying or even
walking.
3. Do not attempt to
do any further
lifting that day.
4. If pain persists
the following day
you should contact a
physiotherapist.
Physiotherapists are
skilled in treating
musculoskeletal
conditions. They can
speed recovery and
help you prevent
further recurrences
by teaching correct
lifting and providing
exercises to
strengthen the
appropriate muscles.
Lifting is something all of
us do on a daily basis at
home and work. Even
people without manual
jobs lift. At home we lift
shopping, baskets of
laundry, babies and
toddlers, pot plants,
heavy saucepans off
the stove, recycling bins
etc, etc.
Lifting does put stress on
the structures in your
back such as the
intervertebral discs, facet
joints, ligaments,
muscles and bones. Back
injuries occur most
frequently when the
spine is bent forwards
and twisted at the same
time.
To help prevent injuring
your back there are some
very simple tips you can
follow.
Before lifting
1. Assess and identify
the weight of the load
2. Always check before
lifting to see if
mechanical aids such
as hoists, lift trucks,
dollies, or wheelbarrows
are available
3. Get help with heavy or
awkward loads
4. Be sure that the load
is "free" to move
5. Check that the
planned location of
the load is free of
obstacles and debris
6. Be sure that the path
to the planned
location of the load is
clear. Grease, oil,
water, litter, and
debris can cause slips
and falls
Wide stance. Hips and
knees are bent
Load is carried
close to the body
General tips for lifting
1. Stand close and
directly face the load
2. Use a wide stance to
gain balance
3. Bend at the hips and
knees
4. Be sure you have a
good grip on the load
5. Keep arms straight
6. Tighten abdominal
muscles but do not
hold your breath
7. Tuck chin into the
chest
8. Keep the load close
to your body
9. Use the strong leg
muscles to lift
10. Do not twist your
back while lifting but
instead shift your
feet
