Whiplash
Prevention
A properly
positioned car
head rest can
reduce the risk of
whiplash in a rear
collision by 6
times.
To prevent
whiplash:
1.the top of the
headrest should be
at eye level or
higher
2.the head rest
should be as close
to the head as
possible.
A low rest can act
as a pivot, and if
too far away it is
ineffective in
minimising
movement.
What Causes Neck
Pain?
Your head is heavy and is
balanced on a narrow support
made up of 7 bones called
vertebrae. The vertebrae are
separated from each other by
discs, stabilised by joints and
ligaments and moved by
muscles. Because the neck is
so mobile, it is easily
damaged. Injury and
postural problems are the
most common causes of neck
pain. Diseases such as
arthritis or degeneration of
discs can also cause pain.
Neck Injuries
Neck Injuries most often
result from motor vehicle
accidents, sports or occupational
accidents. Damage may
occur to vertebrae, joints,
nerves, discs, ligaments and
muscles. A common neck
injury is the acceleration /
deceleration injury or
“whiplash” where the head is
thrown forwards or
backwards.
Posture
Poor posture can cause neck
pain. Ligaments over stretch,
muscles can tire and the neck
joints and nerves are put
under pressure. Slouching
your shoulders with the
head pushed forward,
sleeping with your head in an
awkward position, or working
with your head down for long
periods, will all tend to cause
or worsen neck pain.
Preventing Neck Pain
Here are some helpful tips.
Posture: think tall with chest
lifted, shoulders relaxed, chin
tucked in and head level.
Sleeping: Find a suitable
pillow and avoid sleeping on
your stomach.
Relaxation: Recognize when
you are tense. Relax the
shoulders and do not
clench your teeth.
Work: Ensure your
work station is set
up correctly and you
sit properly in the
changes of position can
help.
Exercise: Correct exercises
will help keep your neck
flexible and strong.
Physiotherapists can
help.
Physiotherapists can help
advise on posture
correction, appropriate neck
exercises, work station setup,
pillows and relaxation
techniques.
Physiotherapists can also
provide specific “hands—on”
treatment if necessary to
help alleviate neck pain.
This may include
mobilisation or manipulation
of the joints, soft tissue
massage and stretches.
After a promising run
towards the end of
season, Dr Paul Annett and
end to the year for the
the motivation needed to
win the premiership that
has eluded them for over
