What is Pilates?Pilates is a very specific form of exercisethat focuses on building the strength andendurance of our core postural muscles, and also works to improve theco-ordination and efficiency of our globalstrength muscles. It was originallydeveloped in the 1920’s by Joseph Pilatesand traditionally uses mat-based exercises,as well as specialised equipment, to improvealignment, posture, strength andco-ordination.How does physiotherapycombine with Pilates?Current physiotherapy research intoexercise and rehabilitation has contributedto the development from the traditionalPilates exercises to what is the modernPilates of today. Physiotherapists at ourCentre have a specialised eye for assessingand developing Pilates-based exerciseregimes that are tailored to the exactneeds of the individual. They combineideas from current physiotherapy researchand that of traditional Pilates to ensure theexercises are safe, efficient and effective. This makes Pilates at our centre ideal forrehabilitation after injury and for injuryprevention and general strength andco-ordination.PILATESWho is suited to Pilates?Pilates specifically focuses on improvingpostural endurance, stability, alignmentand co-ordination. Hence it can providebenefits for those with injuries associatedwith instability and weaknesses, includinglow back and hip pain to thoracic andneck complaints. Pilates can also addressthe underlying causes of postural andchronic pains. As the programmes areindividualised they can be developed tosuit people of any age or fitness levelfrom elite athletes through to post-surgicalrehabilitation and senior’s fitness. What can I expect?Initial Pilates sessions will involve athorough assessment with a physiotherapistin order to determine which exercises areappropriate to prescribe for your body.One-on-one explanation and demonstrationof exercises is required to ensure correctactivation of muscles and to prevent“bad habits” or overuse of tight muscles. After the initial one-on-one sessions youwill be able to progress to small group ormat classes. We use Pilates equipment(Trapeze Table and Reformers), as wellas mat work and rehabilitation exerciseequipment. Wear comfortable clothingto exercise in (however, Pilates is not acardio workout!). Sessions normally runfrom forty-five minutes to one hour.Is it possible to do some Pilatesat home?Yes! To achieve results it is best to includesome home-based rehabilitation exercises. When possible, demonstration of homeexercises will be included in your Pilatessessions.
