Understanding Osteoporosis
The benefits of
exercise include:
• Reduction of bone loss
• Conservation of remaining
bone tissue
• Improved physical fitness
• Improved muscle strength
• Improved reaction time
• Increased mobility
• Better sense of balance
and coordination
• Reduced risk of falls
• Reduced risk of bone
fractures caused by falls
• Reduced pain.
It is however important to
consult your doctor before
commencing any exercise
program and ensure that you
consult your physiotherapist
on what exercises are
appropriate for you.
Osteoporosis is a condition where calcium is lost
from the bones faster than it can be replaced. This
results in thin and brittle bones which makes them
susceptible to fractures. The picture below compares
healthy bone structure with osteoporotic bone.
Normal
Risk Factors
Osteoporotic
There are many factors which contribute to the
development of osteoporosis. These include:
• Age. The longer we live the more likely we are to
develop osteoporosis.
• Gender. Women are more likely to suffer with
osteoporosis but men do get it.
• Medical conditions (eating disorders, rheumatoid
arthritis, thyroid disease, chronic liver and kidney
disorders and mal-absorbtive illnesses eg Coeliac
disease, Chrohn’s disease, IBS etc)
• Lifestyle choices (smoking, inactivity, excessive
caffeine and alcohol intake and low long term
calcium intake)
• Hormone deficiency states (testosterone
deficiencies in males, late first menstrual period
(>15-16yrs), pre-mature menopause (

The staff at Sutherland Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic
hopes you had a wonderful Christmas and safe start to the
New Year. Our staff are working hard to maintain a high
quality of service and ensure your satisfaction throughout 2008.
It certainly has been an eventful few months with
plenty happening at the clinic.
NEW PHYSIOTHERAPIST
Georgia Piggott has become the latest
addition to our expanding team of
physiotherapists. Georgia comes to
Sutherland with a keen interest in sports
and knee injuries, and is actively involved
in continuing professional development.
She is available for appointments between
Tuesday and Saturday.
Taking off with Pilates
Pilates has continued to be a huge
success since the studio’s opening
over 18 months ago. Sarah has
recently commenced teaching classes
in the studio. With her background in
gymnastics, and keen interest in lower
back problems, Sarah is completing a
Polestar Pilates course, which includes
an extensive series of theory and
practical components. Further to this,
through Sarah’s experience, we are
now conducting Gymnastics screenings
for prevention of injury.
WEDDING BELLS
Our principal Kenny finally tied the
knot on December 8th 2007. It was
wonderful day shared with 285 family
and friends! Kenny and his wife Helen,
went off to the Maldives and enjoyed
time off over Christmas. We wish them a
wonderful life together.
A Keen Eye for Surgery
David and Sarah have actively spent
time with Dr Allen Turnbull observing
knee surgery. The experience of
watching surgery allows them to
further develop their anatomical
knowledge and skill in understanding
different joints.
SYDNEY OLYMPIC
The new season to the NSW Premier
League kicked off on February 22 and
Kenny is sure going to have his hands
full over the next 6 months. With a much
stronger team this year, higher hopes of a
potential premiership await.
