The City of Piedmont is a charter city of

beautiful Oakland Hills, overlooking the San
Francisco Bay. Piedmont is centrally located within a
few minutes from Oakland and San Francisco on the West and Concord
and Walnut Creek on the East. Within Piedmont’s 1.7 square-mile area
there are five parks and numerous landscaped areas which offer wooded
paths, tennis courts, children’s playgrounds and picnic facilities.
The City, which is virtually built out, consists of established, high-quality single
family homes on quiet tree-lined streets. A large percentage of the population
are long-time residents while younger families are bringing an increased diversity
to the community. Although the commercial district is extremely limited,
the city has an estate zone in which lot size must be at least 20,000 square feet.
Many of the homes in this zone date from the turn of the century and are
important both historically and architecturally. A significant portion of the city is
located in canyon areas with urban/wild land intermix.
The residents of Piedmont take pride in their community and enjoy many city
sponsored events, such as movies and concerts in the park, the annual Martin
Luther King Day celebration, and the well-known 4th of July parade.
THE CITY
Piedmont was incorporated in 1907 and is a full service city operating under a
City Council/Administrator form of government. Five council members are
elected at-large on a nonpartisan basis to staggered, four-year terms. The council
chooses a mayor and vice-mayor from among its members, and city officials
are appointed by the City Council. The departments within the city include
Administration, Finance, Planning, Public Works, Police, Fire and Recreation.
The city also operates KCOM-TV Channel 27, a government/educational
access station.
The city employs approximately 94 full-time
employees and operates with an
annual budget of $22.5 million.
THE
DEPARTMENT
The Piedmont Police Department employs
20 sworn personnel (the Police
Chief, one Captain, four Sergeants and
fourteen Police Officers), professional
personnel (five Dispatchers, two Animal
Services Officers and one Administrative
Assistant), part-time Per Diem Dispatchers,
and part-time Parking Enforcement
Officers. Volunteers in Public Safety
(VIPS) and Police Explorers round out
the staff of devoted public servants.
The Department has a budget of $5.4
million.
The Office of the Chief provides overall
administration and management of
the Police Department to ensure appropriate
service levels to the community.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Implementation and carrying out
the policy and direction of the City
Council and City Administrator.
• Providing the vision and direction
for Department employees to enable
and promote the enhanced
quality of life in all of our neighborhoods
and to always maintain a
focus on the residents in the delivery
of police services to the community.
• Appointment and retention of employees.
• Interacts with department union
representatives and legal counsel.
• Preparation and administration of
the budget.
• Maintenance of personnel files and
department records in accordance
with city, state and federal requirements.
