at Warrandyte last 

Sunday – Luke 

Hodge and Brad 

Sewell were very generous with 

their time – we sincerely thank David 

Lennon from Yarra Valley Toyota for 

organising Luke and Brad to spend 

time with our U12’s and U14’s. We 

hope to be able to do something 

similar later on in the season. 

UMPIRES 

As some of you will know, last 

weekend was Umpire Appreciation 

Round. It was remiss of me not 

to mention it specifically but it 

is probably but timely to remind 

ourselves of the importance of 

showing respect to our umpires 

who take on the responsibility of 

officiating games of football. A 

couple of basic things can be done 

by players and officials on game day 

to demonstrate our respect of the 

umpire: 

• For coaches it is to shake the hand 

of the umpire before and after the 

game. 

• It’s great also for coaches to 

mention the efforts of the umpire 

in a positive way after the game 

• For our players it is to not dispute 

the umpire’s decisions and shake 

the hand of the umpire after the 

game 

• For our parents and spectators it 

is to respect the umpire’s decision, 

recognising that the umpire 

is quite often another junior 

footballer or maybe a volunteer 

parent. Recognise that we all 

make mistakes and shouting at 

the umpire does nothing to inspire 

others to take on the challenge, 

nor does it set a good example to 

our children.

Round 3 and The YGT were back at 

Colman park hosting St Damiens, 

The game begun with the play 

mainly on the ruby Sharks back 

line, And for the majority of the first 

qrt play was confined to that end 

of the ground, 12 scoring shots to 

none in the 1 st qtr would have you 

believe that we were out of our 

depth, Contrary to that the girls 

really smashed St Damiens across 

the back half, With STDs finding 

the going tough with the intense 

pressure applied by the WPO girls 

only conceding 1 goal for the qtr, 

With 11 behinds scored as a result 

of the pressure applied the girls 

rarely allowed STDs cheap and easy 

shots, Louise F playing at full back 

could have been considered a miss 

match for her opponent, being 

half her size, But Lou showed that 

height & weight were no obstacle, 

Sheer determination and a never 

say die attitude meant she was 

rarely beaten, Resulting in an elbow 

to her nose late in the game as a 

result of the frustration she caused 

by rarely allowing her opponent a 

touch, Micaela also playing on the 

back line was level headed and 

calm under pressure, A perfect 

combo of 2 girls that can kick long 

and mark strong, Maddy King was 

the general in defense playing 

35 mtr out of goal, With her hard 

run and fearless tackling caused 

many turnovers giving the side 

oppurtunity to carry the ball past 

midfield linking up with Maddy D, 

Charity, Dee, Courtney & laura, their 

hard tackling and commitment 

for the ball was fantastic, Hailey P 

popped up for some great marks 

through the middle moving the 

ball quickly finding a team mate 

on the move or in the clear, Sam 

V looked like she was nearing the 

form that made her a must have 

defender, Ella at times played as 

the loose player popping up at the 

right times in the right spots for a 

steadying grab, Danni P took over 

the ruck late in the game giving 

Sara O a rest who worked hard 

and won many taps, Danni, having 

never played ruck looked strong in 

that spot, She is mobile, also one 

of our tallest and can tag a player 

well, Amelia played at times on the 

wing and also forward along with 

Zoe & Trinity, playing important 

roles and not allowing the ball 

out of our attacking zone easily, 

Unfortunately the game ended with 

some avoidable injuries to Louise F, 

Hailey P, Courtney W & Micaela B, 

Our opponents appeared hell bent 

on maximium damage with some 

very unusual tactics, Using their 

body mass as a weapon, Rolling on 

top of our players using their size 

and knees casuing 3 concusions, 

Courtney left in an ambulance after 

a sling tackle left her groggy and 

very sore, Hailey P took the full force 

of a knee to the back of her head 

and probably could of gone with 

Courtney, And Micaela also suffered 

concusion, We are very fortunate 

to have Micaela`s dad John as our 

trainer, Who is a MICA Paramedic 

and was able to attend to the girls 

injured and asses each of them, A 

huge thanks to John, Im sure all the 

mums and dads are grateful to have 

you there and ensuring our girls are 

much safer in your presence. Our 

girls found a spark that was lacking 

in round 2, and showed how a 

TEAM of united and determined 

girls play, The scoreboard is not 

important, Its the effort that is, And 

when you put an effort like that in 

the results will eventually come.

One of the positives on the day 

was the return of Sheather, Parker 

and Brooking from injury, after that 

there were little highlights to talk 

of. 

For three quarters of football we 

were continually second to the 

ball and in most instances the 

opposition always had the numbers 

in and around the ball as we sat on 

the outside looking to get the easy 

ball. The in and under approach 

of last two weeks disappeared for 

most of the game as we continued 

to chase rather than being chased. 

Losing Appleby early only made 

matters worse as we struggled to 

get into the contest against well 

drilled side. The opposition was 

physically stronger taller and faster 

and we must ensure that we learn 

from this rather than just turning 

our back on it. 

That said there were leaders trying 

to set a standard as Bilos with 

Coutts battled of the half backline 

and Bower who was one of the 

few who took on the opposition at 

their own game. Sid was a shining 

light giving it all to a better more 

determined opposition. 

The onballers struggled to get on 

top and we will create a bench 

rotation this week which will see 

them all rested on the bench. 

Kieran battled as did Huntly while 

Hewitt with Dan continued to 

work hard in the ruck with little 

affect against a stronger ruck 

combination. Matt and Todd 

endeavoured to find the ball but 

like most players our execution by 

foot and hand was terrible and we 

were continually under pressure 

when in control of the ball. Isaac, 

Peacock and Richo worked hard 

to get to the ball but found it 

hard. Jarrah, Sheather and Paul 

all battled deep in the backline. 

Occy and Scott fought it out in 

the air but our crumbers could 

not get their hands on the ball 

as the opposition defended with 

attacking aggressions 

It was only the last quarter that 

we saw our real potential has 

we attacked the ball with more 

purpose and direction only to let 

ourselves down in front of goal. 

However it was good to see some 

of the bottom age players in 

Bektash, Rowarth Parker, Poole and 

Brooking creating opportunities. 

For 20 minutes the side stood up 

and took the fight to Greythorn and 

showed a lot more determination 

to get the ball.

Every player must understand that 

to be successful we all have a part 

play and it cannot not be left up to 

a few but the whole team including 

coaches.

take on Heidelberg and 

although the coach got the 

ground wrong, the team 

all made it in time for kick 

off. The first quarter was 

a highlight for the Bloods 

and we matched the 

opposition goal for goal. 

The game got away from 

us a little from the second 

quarter onwards, but we 

saw great performances 

from Jaxson, Seb, Campbell 

and Tom Heffernan. Troy 

Morley tried to employ 

magic powers to tackle 

the opposition and we had 

strong defence from Oscar 

Bennett, Elliott Corcoran 

and Noah Reddaway. The 

under 9’s continue to work 

on running, talking to their 

team mates and kicking 

long to one of our players 

or into space. Our captain 

for the day was Ethan Borin.

During the week the boys had 

been taught the art of bumping 

and come Saturday they put it in 

to action with great results. The 

first Quarter saw Ben McShanag 

put on the best opposition 

player but he had no trouble 

keeping him under control. The 

pressure was put on early with 

Zac, Seb and Archer keeping 

the ball moving. Kyle got into 

the game by shearing the ball 

to Josh who had no trouble 

kicking it to Snowy. The tackling 

and bumping was hard and fast 

with Jacko, Sharpe and Hayden 

showing how it was done. 

The second quarter saw the 

bumping and tackling continue 

with great pressure from the 

back line. Ben Jackson did the 

bump of the day as the second 

quarter was on the way. Oliver 

did a great handpass to help 

set up play and Seb had a long 

kick from the backline. Chris 

was on fire with an awesome 

run. Kayden, Nicholas and Tom 

continue to tackle and keep the 

pressure on. Nathan decided 

to put in his all and go in hard 

which meant a bloody nose and 

time on the bench. His courage 

was shown by his desire to get 

back out there even with a 

bloodied nose. 

The third quarter saw us down 

to sixteen players which was 

due to opposition losing a 

players thanks to Nathan. The 

pressure was held by the back 

line and Archer , Sharpe and 

Seb. The kicking and marking 

really took off as we held the 

lead thanks to Angus, Sam, Mark 

and Dante and a combined 

tackle from Cam, Seb and Kyle. 

The fourth quarter saw the 

bumping and tackling continue 

as well as some great marks from 

Tom, Ben, Hayden and Snowy. 

Nick and Nathan brought it 

home with the two goals of the 

day the final one a great end 

to Nathans courageous day. It 

was a fantastic team effort with 

Medals going to Sam and Ben M 

and the Pizza award to Angus.

As they say, a week is a long 

time in football and the Under 

11s bounced back from a 

humiliating defeat last week 

to roll their arch nemesis, Kew 

Comets, in convincing fashion 

at home. 

The Bloods weren’t able to 

beat their arch rivals in four 

tough encounters last season, 

including a grand final loss, but 

an injection of new Bloods to 

the line-up has complemented 

this tough and passionate crew 

perfectly and Warrandyte had 

its revenge with a thumping 

37 point victory in front of the 

home crowd. 

Right from the outset the 

visitors knew they were in 

for a difficult encounter with 

Hudson “The General” Rostron 

having an immediate impact 

in his 50th game. The midfield 

surged forward early and Billy 

Podmore snapped truly in the 

early minutes of the first quarter 

to set the tone for the match. 

As big Fin Swedosh dominated 

the ruck duels and the likes of 

Brady Poole and Lewis Downie 

powered on around the ground 

with spirited attack on the 

ball, the Bloods were suddenly 

peppering at the big sticks at 

will. Unfortunately accuracy 

was proving a little bit of a 

problem, however, Warrandyte 

kicked away to a 16-point lead 

at the first change. 

The second quarter was much 

of the same, and it was largely 

due to some telling dashes 

around the half forward line by 

new boom recruit Harry Brown, 

whose run and carry tore the 

opposition apart as he thrust 

the ball deep into attack on 

many occasions. Elsewhere, the 

likes of Lachy Haberfield, Josh 

Luttick, Austin Humphris and 

Tynon Kontos were solid as a 

rock in defence and outclassing 

their opponents time after time. 

By half-time the Bloods were 

sending a clear message and 

found a way to kick out to a 

commanding 29 point lead at 

the main break. 

Kew suddenly switched on 

in the third quarter to finally 

challenge the lads with a couple 

of quick goals on the board. But 

they quickly discovered that 

this new-look Warrandyte team 

had developed a steely resolve 

since their last encounter and 

some excellent passages of 

teamwork through the likes of 

Marcus Green, Bailey Trevorrow 

and Ethan Ward meant the 

Bloods machine was in top gear 

and formidable. 

The Bloods did more of the 

same in the final quarter to 

blow their arch rivals away and 

the victory puts them at equal 

top on the ladder after Round 

4, only percentage behind 

Ashburton.

As we prepared to battle our local 

rivals, it was time to bring in the big 

guns. With Brad Sewell attending 

the warm up and addressing the 

players, it was expected that we 

play hard, aggressive footy. It was 

time that this side took a stand…. 

First bounce, our ruckman faced 

off against an ex teammate and 

let everyone know we meant 

business. We had plenty of the ball 

and with nice goals from David 

and Hayden we looked the goods. 

Our opponents fought back late 

in the quarter but due to some 

tremendous team defence, we 

gave them no easy opportunities, 

and they registered many minors. 

We again matched proceedings 

in the second, with our defence 

under pressure, we still conceded 

little. Leyton and Steven held the 

talls, Rhys and Bodhi (welcome 

back) were strong and Tim and Joel 

smothered the smalls and ran off 

them. A late snap from Connor saw 

us 9 points down at half time. 

Eventually we were worn down 

by a more structured team. It was 

a real good lesson for our boys 

to observe team football played 

well. We continue to get plenty 

of the ball, but just don’t seem to 

manage to combine and work for 

each other. A job for the coaches 

to address, and the players to 

embrace. Once we achieve this the 

rewards will be enormous. 

The competition is very open, and 

we know that our best will be good 

enough. There is plenty of hard 

work ahead. It starts on the track 

this week. Ps, Monday night was 

the best we’ve seen all year. To our 

opponents this week, LOOK OUT.

Coming off a big win last week 

may have fostered a little bit of 

complacency amongst the team, 

Kew rovers was always going to 

be a hard game and that's exactly 

what we got from the first bounce. 

We were caught flat footed and 

unprepared for Kews fast, play on, 

run and carry game which saw them 

keep us scoreless for the first quarter, 

no highlights this quarter. 

The second quarter saw us score 

against the flow, with Ben VB getting 

a clearing kick forward from the 

centre to Quinn who marked then 

played on kicking long for goal, Max 

provided a great shepherd for Quinn 

enabling him to get his kick on goal. 

Slowly we were starting to become 

more competitive as the quarter 

progressed, we had equal scoring 

shots for the quarter but kicked one 

less goal. 

In the third quarter we made some 

changes and started to adapt to 

the way Kew went about there 

game, finally starting to match their 

intensity at the ball. 

Jasper had a huge quarter providing 

strength at the contests all around 

the ground, Jesse took a well judged 

mark up forward and kicked a goal. 

The stats showed we were finally 

having a crack, the One Percenters 

were back! with Jesse, Blake, Jasper, 

Harrison, Owen and Lockier leading 

the way, and surprise! surprise! we 

held Kew scoreless for the quarter. 

Special mention to Sam Brown who 

got cleaned up whilst running back 

with the flight of the ball to try and 

take a mark, great courage! 

Fourth quarter we out scored Kew 

with Darcy kicking two majors at 

the 3rd and 11th minute of the final 

term, now we were playing some 

good football. We were finding 

space, linking up and moving the 

ball a lot faster which caught Kew off 

guard a number of times, some great 

One Percenters from Ethan, Ben 

Munks, Lachlan and Jasper saw us 

finish strong but unfortunately the 

siren came too soon, good second 

half effort given we gave Kew a 32 

point headstart at quarter time.
