Vice Presidents Report 

What another cracker of a week 

we’ve had in the Warrandyte Football 

community. 

Last weekend hosted the third family 

night and it was great to see so many 

families enjoying another night of fun 

and festivities together again. 

See you all again at our next family 

night. Date to be advised. 

Football 

The DFS (Dynamic Footy Skills) 

coaches are doing a tremendous job 

helping our coaches further develop 

our future stars. This year our football 

department contracted DFS for both a 

pre season “Upskill Coaches Program” 

as well as the playing group “Skill 

Development Program”. Response 

from the Coaches and our young 

players following the DFS Coach 

Up-Skill & Development Programs 

has been great. The WJFC commitee 

is focused on the successfull 

development of our club, 

Its players both on and off the field, 

Coaches,Match day officials and our 

general football community. 

Wednesday nights “Whos the Man” 

presentation was attened by around 

70 of our 13-17 year old players 

and parents.Hosted by Michael 

Colling and Sam , the no-holds-bar, 

fact faced presentaion drew strong 

attention with many of our young 

men getting up and involved for the 

group participation sections.Michaels 

interactive presentation was insightful 

and at times confronting. Hopefully 

the evening has gone some way to 

help our teenage boys make positive 

and healthy decisions well into the 

future.

I would firstly like to thanks Karen & 

The Girls for wearing the black arm 

bands on Saturday on the passing of 

my grandmother, It was a very kind 

gesture, We welcomed to the team for 

the first time Dahlia, Who comes to us 

from the Bayswater bombers, having 

been playing seniors this season at the 

age of 14 Dahlia has joied the youth 

girls at Warrandyte Park Orchards and 

probably a better age group for her 

own developement, Well we hit the 

field facing an army from Chirnside, The 

were a very very hard battling team, 

And their persistance definately paid 

off, they scored 6-7 and in YGT thats 

a resonable score, However we never 

looked overpowered throughout the 

game, We certainly missed the strength 

of Louise & Danni in the side, there 

strenght and experience makes a huge 

difference in the overall balance of our 

structures, but both girls have been tied 

up with interleague duties over the past 

few weeks, and have done extremely 

well and are set to bring some much 

talent back into the side as a result of 

their experience, We did some good 

things through the game, With Maddy 

Dodd putting her mark on the game 

and opening up the scoring with a goal, 

Also narrowly missing another late in the 

game,She was also getting in and under 

earning free kicks and by playing in front, 

And continued throughout the game 

chasing and creating options probably 

one of her best games this season, 

Courtney was concerned at qtr time that 

she wasnt having an impact at that she 

couldnt get her hands on the ball , that 

all changed and Courtney was also back 

to her best teaming up with Maddy for 

the clearances, taking on the tacklers 

and working clear in what was one of her 

best for the year, Micaela also was a solid 

performer and kept fairly busy playing 

full back in Louise absence, and she 

perfomed well under the pressure she 

was getting from the Chirnside attack, 

Our marking early in the game was a big 

problem with many players struggling to 

hold even chest marks, but that cleared 

up once the frost melted and we marked 

stronger in the second half, Dahlia our 

newest team mate swithed into the ruck 

from qtr time after Charity also raised 

concerns about her timing in her leap 

and not being happy about how it was 

going and asked for the switch to be 

made, Again 2 players raising concerns 

and asking for it to be addressed, Thats 

the type of selflessness that will see this 

team have a real impact into next year, 

The switch worked fantastic, Dahlia was 

a tough oponent to beat in the ruck, and 

I dodnt remember seeing anyone one 

escape a Charity tackle on the half back 

line, Charity sometimes questions her 

results, when in actual fact she has had 

such a huge impact, Keep up the good 

work Charity your kickin butt, Another 

player we missed was Amelia due to 

work commitments making Maddie 

K a busy player, And in usual Maddie K 

fashion, She worked hard all game to 

try and lock down part of the back line, 

Chasing hard and not quiting seems to 

be her motto. In general the girls worked 

well together but were often second to 

the contest, Hoping we come out firing 

this wekend, and if so we will do well.

The Warrandyte Bloods and 

Heidelberg B teams were the lucky 

under 9’s given the job of running 

the ice off the field at Heidelberg 

Park at 8.45am Sunday. While 

the parents wrapped their frozen 

fingers around a cup of coffee, 

the boys, coach and assistant 

coach were out there in the fog 

somewhere playing a hardy match 

of footy! We had 2 captains for day 

in Oscar Bennett and Max Morley 

who lived up to their role with 

strong performances from both, 

and Oscar winning the opposition 

player of the match award. 

The Bloods followed the coach’s 

instructions to keep running to 

stay warm and as a result were in 

the right place and the right time 

and dominated the play. Neils set 

up some great goal opportunities 

for the forwards, while Calum got 

plenty of runs out of the back line 

and sent the ball to our end of the 

field. Hayden took some solid marks 

and Tom Heffernan and Campbell 

put in great performances with 

long and accurate kicks to their 

team mates.

Our newest recruit, playing his 

first match for the Bloods, is Jasper 

Kelly. He put in a solid effort in the 

half back flank, as did Max Bell and 

Jaxson. 

Adam kept his legs moving trailing 

an opposition player and striving 

for the coach’s instructions of 3 

touches per quarter. There was 

much more talking amongst the 

players as they communicated 

their positions to each other and 

resulted in the ball landing in 

Bloods hand more often than not. 

Congratulations to Thomas Curnow 

who was the well deserved winner 

of our player of the match medal 

along with a free haircut! 

A great confidence boosting match 

for our boys and by the time the 

final siren went, the sun was shining 

brightly on the field and they were 

wearing their red fingers with pride!

start kicking the first 2 goals 

for the quarter. But the half 

backline stood up and Ternes, 

Bilos and Paul got on top and 

creating a wall. Bowers was 

kicking the ball long as Rowarth 

lead up the ground to mark, 

switched the across the ground 

to a hard running Bilos who 

chipped to Hewitt who kicked 

our first goal of the quarter. 

Robertson followed this up 

with 2 great running team 

goals before Appleby finished 

of the game with his sixth. Final

Warrandyte versus Beverley Hills 

Coming off a break a loss the 

previous week after a slow start 

to the game we discussed this at 

training. With Peacock and Poole 

away and Bektash out and Nagle on 

rotation we still had a strong and 

competitive side with the return of 

Castagna and Nagle. Our focus was 

getting out of the blocks early. 

A week is a long time and it was 

good to see the players working 

hard early to take control of the 

game. With Kieran back in the centre 

and being heavily supported by 

Hewitt Parker and Appleby we got 

on top early getting the clearances 

from the centre but initially were 

not able to put it on the score 

board before Castagna pushed 

through a pack to score. The rest of 

the quarter both side’s on-ballers 

battled as our backline, being led 

by Astana and strongly supported 

by Nikoda, Jarrah, Bowers, Ternes 

and Bilos stood up to the few 

attacks by the opposition and as 

a team ran the ball out allowing 

Appleby to get free to score a goal 

before the quarter siren rang out. 

First Quarter Warrandyte 2.3.15 to 


The second quarter was like the 

first with the on-ballers stayed on 

top and moved the ball forward. 

Our wingers of Tod Nagle and 

Rowarth were getting into the 

game allowing the forward to find 

space. Desperation by Sheather 

saw him being rewarded as he got 

on top of his opponent and he 

continued to get to every contest. 

Occy was supported by Huntly 

Fernandez and Coutts creating 

options before Appleby marked 

strongly to convert. Richardson 

was now on the ball and winning 

the contested ball. The ball moved 

forward where our smalls of Tehan 

and Boon were always at the foot 

of the pack as Castagna kicked our 

second. Beverley Hills got the next 

2 goals to get back in the game 

before Appleby kicked his third. 

Second Quarter Warrandyte 5.6.36 


The third quarter was a battle 

as both side tried to take the 

ascendancy. Hewitt moved forward 

to kick our first goal of the quarter 

as the opposition replied with a 

goal, Appleby was leading and get 

another goal which was replied 

by Beverly Hills. Sid ,Hewitt and 

Richardson continued to fight for 

the ball. The ball would be moved 

forward but our smaller forwards of 

Isaac and Luke were unable to take 

advantage of their opportunities

Match report by ‘Roving Eye’ 

Well it was a beautiful clear sunny 

winter’s day as we welcomed the 

Camberwell Sharks to the Round 

10 match at Warrandyte Oval. Not 

a cloud in the sky, although gloves 

were handy. Half the ground had a 

layer of frost. Warrandyte TV cameras 

were set up although their staff 

were unable to find any power due 

to the pavilion work. 

The Bloods coaching staff had 

emphasised the importance of this 

match, noting the closeness of the 

competition and the number of 

sides searching for a place in the four. 

It remained to be seen whether the 

Bloods would rise to the occasion. 

A large crowd was at the main oval 

for the first bounce, as the Bloods 

kicked to the southern or shopping 

centre end of the ground in the first 

quarter. 

It was obvious the Bloods had come 

to play this week as they were hard 

out of the blocks, in contrast to some 

earlier matches. 

Sam Paxton took a nice mark in 

defence, Mark Somerwil drew a high 

tackle from his opponent and set 

the scene for the first quarter with 

repeated marks and clearances. 

It was the quarter of clearances and 

forward pressure for the Bloods. 

A kick forward by Seb Nitschinsk 

landed with Cam Ruth, who marked 

right on centre half forward, then a 

nice bounce pass to Zac Wheatley 

allowed Zac to run on to the ball, and 

with run and verve, kicked a lovely 

goal to open the Bloods’ account. 

It was almost the Zac quarter as 

he notched his second, although 

mention should be made of 

timely marks by Nick Smith and 

Tom Jackson and Nathan Leeson’s 

clearance efforts. 

Camberwell had a five minute 

patch of play where they had the 

momentum, but could not find the 

big sticks and the Bloods were able 

to regroup and control the play, and 

ended the first quarter with an 11 

point lead, 2.0 to 0.3. An observer 

would be entitled to suggest the 

coaching staff would have been 

happy with what they saw. 

The second quarter started with 

immense forward pressure by the 

Bloods. They had the press working 

well, which was evident when Zac 

Wheatley ran on to a kick in from the 

Sharks full back, caused a turnover 

and slotted his third goal, which 

sailed straight over the head of the 

Warrandyte vice president having a 

turn at goal umpiring this week. He 

didn’t have to move and would you 

believe it, the Bloods had skipped 

out to a 16 point lead. 

Mark Somerwil was having a first half 

to remember as he took a nice mark 

in the centre of the ground, Kyle 

McGown drew a high tackle from 

his opponent and some great run 

and carry by Kadyn Trayford gave 

Cam Ruth a chance he might have 

taken. There was immense pressure 

across the Bloods half forward line 

to keep the ball in their forward 

50, which allowed Zac Wheatley to 

pick up a loose ball, and with more 

dodging and weaving, slotted his 

fourth. He was having a day out and 

causing headaches for the Sharks 

defence. He created a chance which 

Ben Jackson might have taken, and 

the quarter closed with rare moves 

forward by the Sharks kept at bay by 

the Bloods defence. The Sharks were 

left to ponder a scoreless second 

quarter and at half time, the Bloods 

had opened up a 23 point lead, 4.2 

to 0.3. 

The third quarter opened with an 

early clearance to Zac, who pumped 

the ball inside 50, although it caused

way behind play. A great tackle and 

dispossess by Mark Somerwil and 

a pumping kick to Jack Careedy 

saw a goal scored from the Bloods 

goal square, although common 

sense prevailed and the kick off the 

ground was not allowed to stand. 

The Bloods continued to press and 

a good clearance by Jake Stubbs 

created another forward entry. 

Great defence by Sam Paxton 

saw the ball rebounded from 

the Sharks goal line but forward 

pressure from the Sharks locked 

the ball inside their 50. It was noted 

the Sharks had lifted their intensity 

and the Bloods had dropped off, 

and the Sharks reward came with a 

goal just before three quarter time 

to reduce the margin at the final 

break to 18 points, 4.3 to 1.3. 

There was a tight start to the last 

quarter as the game was played 

between the respective half back 

lines. Nathan Leeson did his best 

to keep the ball forward for the 

Bloods, and Al Rodwell exerted 

great pressure across the centre. 

The Sharks however dug deep 

and scored a long goal to reduce 

the margin to 12 points. Again 

Nathan’s forward entry allowed 

the Bloods to lock the ball inside 

50. Al Rodwell with a strong mark 

on the wing and a great smother 

by Seb Nitschinsk was enough to 

keep the Sharks at bay. There were 

some tired legs as the siren rang 

out across Warrandyte Oval, giving 

the Bloods their fourth straight win 

and the sixth in seven games, only 

broken by an exciting draw with 

Heidelberg. There may however be 

some work for the forward coaches 

this week, as the team were 

goalless after half time and they 

search for some more scoring from 

the front half. Clearly the coaching 

staff have their team up and about 

and heading towards August, 

and anyone watching would only 

agree the Bloods deserve their 

position in the four. With a number 

of the committee on a fact finding 

mission overseas, including a 

visit to Paris St Germain, the local 

Bloods fan would be like what they 

see.

Another glorious footballing day 

down in Warrandyte saw the Bloods 

hosting St.Marys in a battle for both 

teams to stay in touch with the top 

four. The opening term saw a fierce 

battle for control of the game witheach 

side only managing a couple 

of behinds. Austin Humphris was 

magnificent, continually driving 

his team forward with deft passes, 

then chasing and tackling ferociously 

when the visitors had the 

ball. He was ably supported by 

HudsonRostron, who had the ball 

in his hands so many times a doctor 

was on standby in case he suffered 

from leather poisoning. Ethan 

Ward, relishing his midfieldrole, also 

provided plenty of dash around 

the ground. The second quarter 

was an equally tough affair with 

both teams finding it hard to score. 

Ethan Stark showed class with 

strong marking and fine positional 

play, while Kanaida Cooper showed 

great spirit on the wing, winning a 

number of kicks with his excellent 

run. At the long break, St.Marys had 

opened up a nine point lead. The 

second half saw the home side start 

to flag. With a reduced bench due 

to injury and illness, Warrandyte 

were unable to match the intensity 

of the visitors who gradually began 

to get on top. Marcus Green worked 

hard against the flow, as did Harry 

Brown with some strong intercept 

play, but the margin at three quarter 

time blew out to four goals. The 

final term saw the flood gates open 

as the undermanned Bloods could 

no longer stop the rampant visitors. 

Finn Swedosh continued to battle 

hard, but it was all to no avail and 

in the endSt.Marys ran out deserved 

winners by 48 points. This leaves the 

Bloods a couple of games outside 

the four with plenty to do if they 

want to make the finalsthis season.

We were wary of a side that 

comprehensively outplayed us in 

round 2, but had done little else 

all season. It didn’t take long to 

put those worries at ease. This time 

we were switched on right from 

the outset. With the return of few 

handy players, we attacked hard 

early. The boys commented that 

the unseasonal conditions were 

quite tiring, and we put in place a 

heavy bench rotation policy. To be 

honest, everything we put in place 

just worked. 

Despite the scoreline, there was 

still some work to be done by the 

defenders. It was such an open 

game with both sides moving the 

ball quickly. For once it was us that 

showed class up forward and really 

capitalized on the opportunities. 

It is really pleasing to see the 

confidence of this team develop. 

With limited success over their 

football careers so far, this group 

is starting to play the kind of 

football that matches the best in 

the competition. We now need to 

strive for consistency, and having a 

full team to work with would make 

this task easier. It was great to see 

the number of boys that were 

missing through injury all at the 

game this week. 

What was most pleasing to the 

coaches was the boys starting to 

take some chances and run off 

opponents to provide options 

further up the ground. We weren’t 

always at our cleanest with our ball 

use, particularly in tight, however 

the voice was loud and that gave 

the ball carrier options. 

Congratulations and let’s put these 

skills into play against what we 

have heard are a tough opponent.

Fresh off a great win against 

Banyule the boys knew they would 

have their work cut out for them 

against Ladder leaders Fitzroy. 

Fitzroy were undefeated and had a 

huge percentage after kicking high 

scores against all the other teams. 

The first 20 seconds looked ominous 

when Fitzroy cleared the ball out 

of the centre, straight into their 

forward line and kicked goal. But the 

boys regrouped, manned up in the 

middle and this time fought hard 

to win the ball and apply pressure 

to their opposition. There was 

plenty of strength and aggression 

at the ball lead by Captain for the 

day Leo, who was back to crashing 

packs, fierce tackling from Azza, 

Casa and Callum as well as flashes 

of great teamwork to clear the ball 

out of the backline and move the 

ball forward by Munsky and Nick 

saw us have two scoring shots for 

the half, unfortunately resulting in 

only minor scores. Our backline was 

continually under siege but held 

up under tremendous pressure 

repelling Fitzroy as they marched 

forward and we were able to run 

out the half restricting them to only 

2 goals. 

At half time the Coach reiterated 

that we were playing our best game 

all year but we needed to keep 

our opponents more accountable 

and our forward line needed to 

be playing in front to reward the 

good work done by our Backs and 

Midfielders. Do the 1 percenters 

shepherds, blocks, play in front and 

keep working as a team were the 

instructions. 

After half time our determination 

and desire had not diminished and 

we continued to make Fitzroy fight 

for every possession and some 

of the great team efforts saw our 

backline hold up as we restricted 

Fitzroy to only 2 points for the 

quarter. 

Coming into the last quarter 

the Coach put the Forward line 

under pressure to perform and we 

managed to keep Fitzroy scoreless 

for the last quarter but we were 

unable to put a major on the 

scoreboard and only managing 1 

point. The effort was sensational 

and it was clearly the best game the 

boys had put together all year. 

After the game the Fitzroy coach 

complimented the boys on their 

efforts and praised the way we 

played the game as well as our 

hardness and determination. We 

restricted Fitzroy to their lowest 

score all year and all the boys 

should be proud of their effort!

Hmmm.... Who played well this 

week? I think the end result tells us 

everyone did! 

It was a terrific effort by the team 

with all players contributing 

and doing their bit during the 

game, our defense stood tall and 

our attack was relentless going 

forward. The sharing of the ball, 

plus great teamwork ensured that 

all players were brought into the 

game which created nice passages 

of play and quick ball movement 

going forward resulting in 

numerous scoring shots on goal.
