Round 7 for our girls had us playing for 

the first time on home soil on a Sunday. 

The build up to the game was huge, 

we all wanted to put on a memorable 

performance for our home crowd that 

had come down to support us. We were 

up against Whitehorse Colts, a top of the 

ladder team comprising of all 16,17 &18 

year old girls that have been playing 

league footy within boys teams since 

tackers. So we knew we were up against 

massive odds, but positive and pumped 

as always we ran onto the field. It was 

clear very early on that our Rubys were 

no match for this slick outfit of girls. 

Whitehorse had a style of play that 

saw them smother every attempt our 

girls made to get the ball up to our 

forward 50 to get a score on the board. 

Our backline girls, Micaela, Josie and 

Danii amazed us with their tenacity as 

time after time they managed to gain 

possession of the ball, only to have the 

opposition intercept every attempt 

that was made to push forward. Our 

midfield fought a hard battle all day 

with Ashley, Holly, Tenae, Donata and 

DeAnne tackling hard, trying to get 

boot to ball to enable our forward line 

a chance to score. As we were forced to 

field a depleated team on the day, the 

tap outs were left up to Eliza, her efforts 

did not go unrewarded as some brilliant 

crumbing work by Brooke, Corrine and 

Emma gave us the opportunity to gain 

possession and go forward. A brilliant

passage of play late in the in the 4th 

quarter, saw Brooke break through the 

pack and with the help of a brutish 

Sheppard by Maddie, a gutsy effort by 

Charity delivered the ball deep in our 

in our forward line. Zoe got her head 

over the ball, scooped it up and went 

for the big sticks only to be smothered 

by the opposition and go unrewarded. 

Ella, Paris and Amy were relentless all 

day in their attempts to push forward, 

resulting in Amy having to come off 

injured, forcing the coaches to try and 

fill her position early in the 2nd half. The 

girls were defeted by a better team on 

the day, but gave us all they had and 

were told in the rooms after the game 

to hold their heads high and take out 

of the match what they needed to 

move to the next level in their football 

skills. Whitehorse are the team we are 

aspiring to be. They played with skill 

and a good sportswoman’s ethic that 

the Bloods admire. The medal was 

awarded to Micaela who never gave in 

all day and produced some beautiful 

work in the backline, the Indian Affair 

award was presented to Emma for her 

tireless performance in the midfield and 

the Hairdressing award was given to 

Josie who played a true captains game 

all day, her ability to lead the girls on 

and off the field is one to be admired, 

her tackling is ferocious and her ball 

handling skills are second to none.

After our narrow win last week, it was 

back to “Warrandyte Park” to take on 

the Macleod No. 1 side. With injury 

to Kieran, Mikey H at a wedding (too 

young to get hitched Mikey!!) and 

Macleod down to 17 players, our Colts 

were bolstered by the return of Jason. 

The first 10 minutes of the first quarter 

looked like setting the tone for a big win 

with 3 goals in succession. However, 

our guys seemed to “switch off” and the 

“Eagles” got 2 late goals to leave them 7 

points down at ¼ time. 

A very even second quarter followed. 

With our opponents starting to win the 

clearances, we were outscored in the 

quarter by a disciplined Macleod team 

who use the ball well. The statistics told 

us a few things at half time – with the 

scoreline 4.5.29 to Macleod 4.3.27. 

The inside 50’s, efficient kicks and 

contested ball counts were almost 

identical. The other obvious deficiency 

in the Bloods game was a lack of 

communication and teamwork. Several 

times our guys did not talk or do the 

“team first” things. First option football 

is what we are focussed on at training 

and seemed to have been forgotten in 

many passages of play. Teamwork is key 

to our game style and when we don’t 

follow team rules it shows!!

goals to 1 in a demonstration of what 

our Colts are capable of. Our centre 

clearance work, as a result of Jack’s 

excellent ruckwork was great to watch; 

with Harry, Daniel and our midfield 

pushing forward with speed and skill. 

The final quarter was pretty even with 

our opponents outscoring us 3 goals 

to 2. 

Overall, our greater skill and contested 

ball winning (41 to 29 for the game) got 

us across the line. If we look closely, 

about 20 – 25 minutes of good footy 

won us the game!!! 

Let’s use the bye and break to freshen 

–up, stay fit and get ready to tackle the 

back half of the season!!

Warrandyte’s barnstorming Under 10s 

may well have experienced “the loss 

they had to have” in a top of the table 

clash away against a powerful Kew 

combination on the weekend. 

In a tight contest that didn’t fail to 

entertain an enthusiastic crowd, 

the match lived up to expectations right 

from the start as the Bloods held firm in 

defence thanks to some solid work from 

the likes of Lachie Haberfield and Billy 

Podmore, while skipper Brady Poole, 

Hudson “The General” Rostron, Lewis 

Downie and big man Finn Swedosh 

found their rhythm and started 

bullocking the ball forward. In a fierce 

tussle, the young Warrandyteans took a 

five-point lead into the first change. 

With some fantastic support from 

parents and family on the sidelines, 

the young Bloods powered on in the 

second term. Austin Humphris was 

looking dangerous up around goal but, 

along with a couple of other normally 

sharp shooters, found it hard to convert. 

Nevertheless, the visitors managed to 

find a way to squeeze in a couple more 

goals before the half-time break thanks 

to some dashing displays around the 

middle of the ground by Russell Black, 

Ethan Ward, Marcus Green, Poole, and 

Downie, while the likes of Josh Luttick 

and Michael Morena kept repelling 

the ball from defence every time Kew 

moved forward. The Bloods kicked out 

to a 21-point advantage at half-time 

and looked like going on with the job 

and cementing victory No.8 on the trot.

However, Kew showed just why it had 

only lost one match for the season to 

date and fought back hard while the 

young Bloods took the foot off the 

pedal slightly to allow the home team 

to make their charge. By three quarter 

time the game was all square and a real 

old-fashioned battle between two even 

teams was on the agenda for the final 

term. 

The Bloods managed to snatch a goal 

and hit the front early in the last quarter, 

but Kew found a way to strike back with 

a couple of lucky breaks, including a 

goal that was given the all clear while 

many spectators seemed certain it had 

hit the post. The home team surged 

again in the dying moments and kicked 

the sealer as the Warrandyte Under 10 

crew tasted defeat for the first time this 

season by seven points. 

Coach Owen Humphris was pleased 

with his lads’ courage throughout the 

match and urged his boys to learn 

from the victory and realise they need 

to work together for four quarters. The 

Bloods were disappointed with the loss 

but anyone in the rooms after the game 

could sense revenge was on the cards 

the next time the two teams meet at 

Warrandyte’s home ground.

and he showed us all with 2 long shots 

for goal. Robbie McKenzie continued to 

be a nuisance up forward kicking his third 

goal. Dylan Kranjc unfortunately ended 

up second best after a head clash with 

Nick Parker saved by his head guard. Big 

Dan finished off his game and the quarter 

snapping truly to register his second goal

Damien’s 

We set ourselves the task to ensure that we 

start from the first bounce and avenge our 

first game Defeat by St Damien’s. Isaac Boon 

was rewarded the captaincy for the game 

due his continued hard work at both training 

and on game day. His first task was to win 

the toss and kick with the wind. So it was a 

surprised coach who looked up with to see 

Isaac win the toss and then point to the other 

end kicking into the wind. It did not matter 

as Isaac said we would have the wind in the 

last quarter. 

With Fernandez running late Jack Poole 

moved to centre half back and alongside 

Jackson Mc Innes and Ryan Sheather they 

started many attacks into the forward line 

where a rejuvenated Robbie McKenzie 

roving deep on the forward line converted 

our first goal. As the mid field of Dan Chellew 

Nick Parker Ben Richardson and Josh Huntly 

and wingers Liam Dame and Dylan Kranjc 

were now on top setting up each attack into 

the forward line Josh Rowarth was elusive 

around the forward line and marked and 

kicked our second, before Dan Chellew 

playing like a rover swooped on the ball and 

kicked his first goal for the season on the 

run, and Nick Parker in typical style crashed 

through the half forward line to kick our 

fourth goal for the quarter It was great to 

see the likes of Lewis Jakisic and Luke Tehan 

fighting for the ball in and around the packs 

and Dylan Clifton presenting up the ground 

as a leading forward option. At the end of 

the quarter Warrandyte 4.4.28 to St Damien’s 

0.0.0 

With the wind behind us and Nick Fernandez 

arriving and moving into the forward line

it was time to take control. Isaac boon was 

moved on the ball and Connor Vernon 

moved on to the half forward. It was not long 

before Robbie McKenzie popped up again 

and kicked his second for the game. Nick 

Fernandez was now presenting as a leading 

forward kicking two goals before Lewis 

Jakisic took a strong mark and converted his 

first goal for the year. It was very good to see 

the discipline in the players to continually 

look up and kick the ball to the designated 

hot spot allowing the forwards every chance. 

The highlight of the quarter was the gutsy 

pack mark by Jackson McInnis twisting his 

knee but having the courage to go back 

and kicked truly. At the end of the quarter 

Warrandyte 9.6.60 to St Damien’s 0.0.0 

The third quarter was like the first with 

the backline lead by Dale Smith and Nick 

Anderson continually defending every move 

in to the back half and turning it into attack 

through hand ball and pin point kicking. 

Josh Rowarth replaced Jackson McInnes on

This game was almost a make or break 

for the young bloods and we needed a 

win to set up our second half of the year. 

Captain for the day was Callum who was 

also playing his 50th game and was set for 

a big effort. 

We tried to get the boys ready for a quick 

and hard start but we were surprised by 

Banyule’s attack on the ball and again 

we found ourselves two goals down by 

the end of the of the first quarter.Coming 

into the second quarter I asked the boys 

to dig deep and a more committed effort 

was needed, Jack and Ben J continued 

with the ruck duties and were dominant 

and our backline lead by Nick, Hodgy and 

Connor were under constant attack. 

Going into the second half we were 18 

points down and had not even scored a 

goal, however the never say die attitude 

of the boys shone through for a more 

committed and team orientated second 

half! 

Leo and Callum were giving us constant 

attack on the ball running into the centre 

bounce from the grandstand wing, Nick 

and Connor were also moved onto the 

ball and gave us added strength around 

the stoppages and the young bloods 

started to look for their team mates with 

clearing handballs and 1 percenters from 

Ollie, Munksy and Bailey. 

The ball was driven into our forward line 

and we managed to keep it there for 

most of the quarter when Jack managed 

our first goal from a set shot which was 

quickly followed by another goal from 

Azza,then along with a couple of minor 

scores saw us only 5 points down at the 3 

quarter time break.

boys smelt a win if they could keep up 

the 3rd quarter effort. Blake was cool 

across the half back line with a nice pick 

up and clearance, Callum was ducking 

and weaving moving the ball from his 

opponent and Leo was back in fine form 

getting the hard ball and moving it 

forward. Jack was put to full forward for a 

well earned rest and target down forward 

and he managed to slot through another 

goal to put us 1 point up. Banyule to their 

credit never gave up and came back with 

another goal, stealing back the lead. 

Finally after some desperate and 

challenging footy to get the ball into our 

forward line, a high tackle to Josh in the 

goal square gave him a set shot at goals. 

Cool in a crisis Josh went back and put the 

ball through the big sticks giving us back 

the lead. 

The cry went out to all players to man 

up and defend, finally holding off a late 

charge by Banyule to run out 2 point 

winners. Well done guys but we need to 

stop giving opposition teams early starts 

and lets start playing 4 quarters. The 

Coach can’t take too many close calls like 

this! 

Congratulations to Leo for receiving the 

medal from the opposition in what was a 

fantastic effort in a hard fought game. The 

Good sport medals went to Callum for his 

50th game and his tireless team effort and 

Josh for his improvements from the start 

of the year and for standing up when his 

team needed him. 

Indian affair award went to Blake for his 

continuous effort across half back.

As we have reached the halfway 

point of the season it gives us 

time to reflect on our first half 

performance and what the 2nd 

half has in store. The last 2 weeks 

we have come up against some 

formidable oppenents who on 

talent alone maybe deserve to be in 

a higher division. It is a credit to the 

boys in the way they have recruited 

to gives us the numbers required to 

get a group of lads on the park each 

week. The new inclusions such as 

shane, shamus, dylan and ash have 

been great additions to the team 

and as we gel as a group we can 

only get better. Even though we 

dont have many wins on the board 

we have been dilligent in carrying 

out certain game plans such as

the huddle and centre clearances 

of which has been extremely 

pleasing. We are in the middle of 

the development program and 

hope to see the positive signs in 

the 2nd half of the season making 

us more competitive team but

dylan and ash who were worthy 

medallists last week and we hope 

josh makes a speedy recovery 

fron his knee injury plus daniel 

showing great courage playing last 

week with a broken wrist and can 

rejoin the team soon. Thanks for 

everybodys assistance so far with 

special mention to damien and 

sharon who are doing a ripping job 

as team managers. GO BLOODS!

Last week at Camberwell was a 

difficult outing as our opponents 

jumped us early and were able to 

get some easy goals on the board. 

Although Darcy & Ben VB worked 

the ball well up the wings, it was 

Roy who stepped up and made 

a hard contest of everything. His 

marking under pressure was great 

& he moved the ball quickly but 

the Sharks circled to rebound the 

ball continually. Jasper was giving 

us first use of the ball out of the 

centre but we couldn’t seem to 

take advantage of our clearances 

to get the ball quickly down to 

Callum who was busting his guts 

to try to get the ball into the goals. 

It was great to see what Jarryd can 

do when he is on fire & his quick 

kicking & handball allowed us to 

push forward on several occasions. 

We saw Jessie moving well and 

the ball was always delivered to its 

target.

The Clash of the Titans. With the 

boys well rested after the bye and 

certainly well trained, we set of for 

Fitzroy looking for 4 wins in a row 

and a share of top spot. Mark, armed 

with knowledge of our opponent’s 

strengths from his reconnaissance 

mission, wound the boys up so 

much that the roof nearly lifted off 

the tiny site shed change rooms. 

The siren sounds, the big men fly 

(although for the first time this year 

we had a distinct height advantage) 

and it was immediately evident that 

this was no contest for the feint 

hearted. Fitzroy had speed and 

commitment to the contest but 

they had to contend with our newly 

developed confidence to handball 

and run to receive approach. Well 

we witnessed quick hands and 

great linking play that just allowed 

more individuals to put their stamp 

on the game. The run was provided 

by Zane, Luan, Hayden and Liam, 

but the inside work of Jake T and 

Steve made it all possible. Rhys was 

a rock in the backline, displaying 

tremendous confidence and clean 

ball handling, and when Connor 

entered the game his marking was 

a highlight. 

It was a really even contest all over 

the ground. Riley had got himself 

heavily involved in the action and 

showed amazing courage to hit a 

pack at speed, crashing the pack and 

needing a few moments to recover. 

This typified the effort required. 

Zane soon followed suit and despite 

also needing a few moments to regather, 

his opponent was worse

off. The difference of 10 points at 

half time was only Fitzroy taking 

their chances up forward whilst we 

couldn’t. 

Much of the same continued. It 

was really tough and courageous 

footy with dashes of brilliance at 

times. Hayden took the play on at 

half forward and with a beautifully 

timed run from Caillen, he received 

and bounced through a long shot 

into the wind. Unfortunately a 

couple of defensive lapses cost us 

twice in quick succession. 

15 points down and coming home 

with the wind had us confident. 

We controlled the play early but 

the polish up forward just wasn’t 

there today. A couple of points was 

all we could manage before our 

opponent hurt us on the rebound. 

The boys fought it out to the end 

and certainly showed plenty of 

battle wounds once the final siren 

sounded. A collective thanks to 

the trainers who were busy, but 

awesome. 

With the score not reflective of 

the tightness of the contest, we 

were truly proud of the effort of 

everyone. A physical game that we 

held our own on, and yet we could 

see the development of the game 

plan unfolding. Congratulations 

boys.

their onballers quickly recovered & 

controlled the play. 

We saw some shepherding from 

Lockier, Owen & Tim that kept us in 

the game but we still couldn’t score a 

major. Ben VB showed us just how hard 

he works getting in & under the packs 

to get his hands on the ball & is an 

inspiration to all the team. 

While Ben Dickson was lifting and 

breaking away, we couldn’t get the 

ball to our forwards in Devin & Jasper. 

Down back, Michael was stopping all 

they could throw at us & together with 

Liam, they continued to run the ball out 

of defence but in the end Camberwell 

had a comprehensive win over a 

disappointed Warrandyte.
