Rnd 12 Was the last game of the 

season for the Youth Girls, Having 

played our round 13 match during 

the school holidays in the curtain 

riaser, So it was of too Bundoora to 

take on St Damians, After our first 

clash at Colman this season had 3 

girls concussed, there was some 

nerves around the trip to Bundoora, 

Having the head of YJFL umpires, 

David Hannan and his sun umpiring 

our game was a huge comfort, The 

game was very important for many 

reasons, Firstly we had Hailey & Dee 

playing their 100th junior games, 

And most of those games would 

have been played together from 

playing together at Forrest Hills 

until making the transistion to the 

Youth Girls comp and playing for 

Warrandyte and now Warrandyte 

Park Orchards, Both girls would 

have many great experiences and 

would have seen many changes in 

their 100 games, They are both Captains 

and leaders of the team and 

we congratulate them an a terrific 

milestone, Also in our last game we 

have 2 girls who have potentially 

played their last Youth Girls Game 

due to age restrictions, Courtney 

Weeks as well as our 100 gamer 

Dee are both over the age limit and 

seasons end, So it was with great 

sadness that we say farewell to 2 

fantastic contributors, Courtney 

also a team captain was Part of the 

first Park Orchards YGT, And was 

instrumental along w tith Shannyn 

Dodd in making the dream a reality, 

Courtney had been captain in 

the first 2 season at park Orchards & 

upon the merge of the 2 teams was 

a natural choice for her maturity and 

work ethic on the field, We are however 

holding our breaths as we are 

waiting the result from the YJFL, We 

have recebtly written to the league 

requesting that they investigate 

the possibility of adjusting the age 

limit to 19 in line with other leagues 

in the area. So we may not of seen 

the last of these two just yet. On to 

the game, It was the wettest I think 

I have seen a ground in 3 seasons, 

The coaches and assistants area 

was cover in about 3inches of water, 

And the ground played like an 

ice skating rink, We knew we were 

in for a tough game and a tough 

game we had, We did some solid 

things at times and made some 

posotive forward advances against 

the opposition, We probably handpassed 

too often gaining little 

ground and missing targets, But we 

did get our hands on the ball often 

and against quality opposition, Had 

we of kicked instead of handpassing 

we may have really threatened 

the score board, We marked pretty 

good in wet conditions, However St 

Damians were just a little to experienced 

for us and even though they 

kicked 8, we never looked thrashed, 

Just a little out skilled.Dahlia did 

some great work in the ruck and 

looked to have control of the sentre 

bounce, Maddie King and Sam 

V worked well across the backline 

with Lou & Micaela giving us some 

long kicking out at full back, Ella 

played well all day running well 

and marking strongly, Ella is one of 

those players that the team will be 

looking at in 2014 as being a focul 

point in a key position role likely up 

forward with Imogen playing along 

side her, Both girls are pretty good 

kicks and its what we need if we are 

going to trouble the scorers next 

season. Maddy D worked hard and 

earned plenty of the footy, Another 

who the team will look at to play a 

big part in its progress. Courtney 

& Dee played like they do every 

game, Hard at and always in it, If in 

fact this was their last, Both girls will 

be sorely missed, But we are all fortunate 

to have been able to watch

everything. The game ended on 

a sour note with Hailey Paul going 

down just seconds before the 

end of the game with what may 

be a serious knee injury, Instead 

of chairing Dee, Hailey & Courtney 

off the ground, We carried Hailey, 

It was unfortnate for the season 

to end this way and our fingers 

are crossed for Hailey and that she 

makes a speedy recovery, Congratulations 

to all of you for your 

efforts in being a part of something 

very unique, A big thanks 

too all the parents that supported 

the team and assisted the team 

when needed, A special mention 

for Ryan & Noah for their help at 

training and game day, You boys 

have been a great help, You have 

alll contributed to a great season 

and a lot of enjoyment, Hoping we 

can do it all and be bigger & better

The Tackers team were itching 

for a good result after the 

disappointment of last week’s 

game, so they came out strong 

against the Banyule Bears at home. 

Our captains for the day were Noah 

and Seth and they led the team out 

to a good start with a goal a piece. 

The wind was whipping across 

the oval by the end of the first half 

but the boys took on the coach’s 

instructions and stepped up to the 

mark. Elliot, Haydon, Ethan and 

Neils were disciplined in the back 

line and stopped the opposition 

from scoring. Max Bell and both 

of our Oscars were excellent in the 

middle of the ground and kept the 

ball heading our way. 

One of the stand-out players for 

the season, Tom Heffernan, put in 

a superb game, showing accuracy 

and speed in all positions. His 

strong team skills are proving 

integral to each match. 

Robbie bagged another massive 

50 metre goal for the season and 

followed it up with celebratory 

windmill run the length of the field! 

A great performance by new comer 

Jasper saw him win the opposition 

player of the match award, whilst 

Campbell was the deserved 

recipient of the Bloods valued 

player award having seen plenty 

of the ball with some inspirational 

play. A great result for the Bloods, 

(for those who were keeping 

count!), well done guys!

Warrandyte versus Beverley Hills 

I look at the strength of this side 

and become frustrated with our 

recent fade outs but still have 

the confidence that our season is 

about to take off. 

With an on ball team of Hewitt, 

Jimmy, Parker, Sid, Robertson, 

Poole and the improving Huntly 

and Brooking we match up better 

than anyone. Bring in the brilliance 

of Castagna and the ability to switch 

Richardson, Bilos and Bowers on to 

ball we have it over any opposition. 

Supported by Nagle and Todd who 

can be backed up by Rowarth and 

Bektash this should be the perfect 

attacking side. 

Our strength has been our back 

line lead by Astan. The support 

around with Huntly and Sheather 

Jarrah and Paul in the last line of 

defence ranks us the best in the 

competition. The half backs of 

Bowers Coutts, Ternes Sid and Bilos 

have been the backbone to our 

delivery into our forward line with 

their attacking. This line has been 

strongly supported by Poole and 

allowed Rowarth and Bektash to 

be utilised as support. 

The forward line on paper is 

strong with Occy now finding his 

way on the half forward line we 

support from Peacock, Fernandez, 

Brooking and Paul while Ternes has 

shown his versatility at times at 

Centre Half forward. 

Deep in the forward line we have 

seen the smalls of Boon Tehan 

and Richardson being prepared 

to sacrifice their gamme for the 

team and at the same time get to 

the contest and fight it out against 

bigger opposition. Full forward has 

been the hardest position to fill as 

Poole, Hewitt Ternes ,Appleby and 

Castagna have all had their day 

playing there. 

Now close your eyes and imagine 

what this group of players 

will do when working as one. 

The versatility of this side is its 

strength and we have yet to see 

this complete side all playing in 

the same game. Players are now 

coming back from injury and now 

it is time to go out and show what 

we can do as when the starts are 

aligned and we get to play our best 

team 

Let us play hard disciplined and 

relentless football and we will go 

all the way. It is up to you the player 

to make it happen both on and off 

the field.

A bitterly cold day awaited the lads 

from Warrandyte in there battle for 

third spot against the vastly improved 

Ashburton side, who had 

not dropped a game since Warrandyte 

had defeated them earlier in 

the season. 

The lads had practiced some defensive 

strategies at training during the 

week and the coaches were keen to 

implement these on an unsuspecting 

opposition. 

Kicking against the breeze in the 1st 

quarter, our strategies were quickly 

tested as Ashburton continued to 

mount continuous attacking moves 

forward. Zac was manful around the 

packs, Luke was endeavouring to 

kick it long and Hayden was always 

first for the ball. Ashburton kicked 

three 1st quarter goals but it would 

have been more if not for the efforts 

of Alistair who stopped 2 or 3 more. 

Kicking with the wind in the 2nd , 

Clint asked for a greater effort from 

the lads. Despite there best efforts 

the boys were struggling to penetrate 

a tight Ashburton defense. 

Seb and Nick were doing some 

strong work in and under and Jacko 

was trying his best in the ruck but 

Warrandyte failed to put a score on 

the board for the 2nd quarter and 

found themselves four goals down. 

The coaches had to question the 

work ethic of the boys as Clint 

asked: 

“Do you know you’re the better 

team ?” which was meet with a half 

hearted response. 

“Do you want to play finals football?”, 

which again received an unconvincing 

reply. 

“Is it too cold to play football today?” 

“YEEEEEESSSS!!!!” was the chorused 

response from the shivering huddle. 

Clearly the icy breeze and a rev up 

from the coach wasn’t enough to 

spark us into action as Ashburton 

kicked three more with the use of 

the breeze. Hayden was again at the 

coal face, Nathan was in every contest 

and Sam was competing hard 

but our defense was constantly under 

intense pressure. 

The three quarter time break saw 

Clint employee the master stroke 

tactic. Kicking with the breeze the 

lads were encouraged to just play 

free flowing football and enjoy 

themselves. 

And it worked. Firstly Al and Seb 

kicked unlucky points before Al 

kicked our 1st. Zac took a ripper 

mark and running goal for our 2nd 

and then received a great pass from 

Snowy, and from the set shot got 

our third. We were now dominating 

the play and Kadyn could have easily 

had our fourth. 

Unfortunately the sluggish start 

was too much to claw back. In a very 

tough day for attractive football, the 

coaches award went to Nick Sharpe 

who put in a consistent four quarter 

effort.

positive attitude and team spirit and

Last week we played Fitzroy at W.T 

Peterson oval. 

The sun was shinning ,the oval soft

challenge was to see just how far we 

have come over the past couple of 

weeks and to see if we can match it 

with another top side. 

We got off to a good start,getting 

the ball out of the centre , giving 

our forwards many opportunities 

but couldn‚Äôt put a score on the 

board.Our backline stood up tall.The 

tackling and pressure was fantastic 

and restricted Fitzroy to 2 goals. 

In the 2nd, and kicking against 

the wind we put Will and Ryley 

in defence for some extra run & 

carry.The backline were under 

constant pressure from the Fitzroy 

forwards,but kept them to 2 goals. 

The Bloods/Dockers had Fitzroy 

under constant pressure and set up 

many opportunities , but couldn‚Äôt 

get a score on the board. We went in 

at half time Fitz 4-11 to W/Dh 0-0 

There was a bit of a buzz in the rooms 

and a new belief & confidence in 

each other that we were right in this. 

The start of the 3rd and a few 

rotations and kicking with the wind 

, we began full of attack. 

Francesco took a great mark and 

kicked our first,daniel running front 

and centre had a quick snap and 

narrowly missed,Jake took a strong 

mark and followed the coaches 

instructions to kick it to the left 

hand goal post.He did that and hit 

it. Toppi ,running hard and breaking 

the pack open kicked the goal of the 

day from the boundry.Fitzroy had a 

few opportunities but our backline 

rushed them through.

In the last and kicking against the 

wind that seemed to be getting 

stronger,we put Will and Ryley back 

into defence for the extra run and 

carry.Fitzroy had a scoring shot early 

for a minor score.Our backline once 

again were superb, giving Fitzroy 

nothing. 

We had winners all over the ground, 

the run & carry from Raf,Nick and 

Robert across the midfield set up 

many opportunities up forward.We 

had Fitzroys backline under constant 

pressure but could only kick a minor 

score.

With a warm up that was less 

than impressive and a physically 

imposing side waiting on the 

ground for us, the coaches were 

nervous. Kicking against the wind 

didn’t help either. After giving up an 

early goal, we then witnessed some 

of this team’s finest play. What was 

really pleasing was the amount of 

voice that these boys used to help 

each other and the result was some 

outstanding creative, linking, hard 

running play. Twice Alex was on the 

receiving end of some great team 

work that involved Ari, Jake, David, 

and Hayden. Riley got involved to 

set up Caillen, and David produced 

one of his renowned snaps. 2 goals 

up at quarter time was a great 

result. 

Our opponent pushed large 

numbers back when we had the 

wind which made our boys think a 

bit harder about how to get results. 

Alex ran on to another after the 

ball moved through a number of 

hands. When Andrew, the smallest 

bloke on the field backed back into 

their ruckman under a high ball to 

force a contest, Leyton swooped 

and got the reward for Andrew’s 

courage. The half was capped off 

when Steven took a big pack mark 

and kicked truly. 

With the game seemingly in control 

the reward in the second half 

didn’t reflect the output. We were 

never really headed, with some 

tremendous defence from Bodhi, 

Rhys, Josh E, and Tim repelling the 

majority of our opponent’s attacks. 

The forwards and mids were over 

crowding our scoring zone and 

taking high risk shots when other 

options were available. Some 

clever work from Leo to goal, and 

a nice solo effort from Alex were all 

we had to show for the half, apart 

from 13 minor scores. 

With us currently sitting 5th and 

percentage crucial, we cannot 

afford to waste these opportunities. 

It was however a pleasure to watch 

some of the best football that this 

side has produced.

Sitting 3rd on the ladder the young 

Bloods ventured to an old familiar 

ground where past glory had been 

realised and a Grand final berth had 

been achieved. 

Ivanhoe have been a strong team all 

year and were sitting comfortably at 

number 2 on the ladder, the game 

started with both teams feeling 

each other out and Leo kicked true 

scoring a goal, Harper & Samuel 

taking strong marks down back to 

keep us competitive. 

Half way through the quarter our 

backline was siege and they were 

fighting hard to stop the Ivanhoe 

attack. 

At quarter time the Coach put a few 

players under the microscope and 

challenged them to lift their efforts. 

The second quarter saw an 

improved effort with Leo dodging 

3 or 4 players but just missing the 

goal and some hard tackling from 

Lachie & Harrison but again we 

were unable to get any penetration 

with our kicks and Ivanhoe were 

able to hold onto the lead. 

After a slow start in the second 

half a smother by Leo and strength 

shown by Connor encouraged the 

Bloods to look up and drive the ball 

forward, Callum first in for the ball 

received 2 free kicks in the forward 

line resulting in two majors. The 

improved effort and saw us keep 

the ball in our forward line for 

the majority of the quarter but 

unfortunately we could not convert 

any further. Although by the end 

of the quarter we had clawed our 

way back to be within only 5 points 

of our opposition and the win was 

there if we wanted it. 

Again the instructions from the 

bench were ‚ ‘Be first in for the ball’, 

but the muddy ground and bigger 

bodies took their toll and Ivanhoe 

lifted the tempo of the game 

and surged forward kicking two 

unanswered goals for the quarter 

and eventually running out victors. 

We need to make sure our minds are 

on the job next week and ensure a 

strong effort to put our position on 

the ladder beyond doubt if we want 

to play finals this year. 

Congratulations to Leo for a great 

game and receiving the medal 

from the opposition and Azza C 

was awarded the Good Sports 

award for his attack, strength and 

determination in trying to win the 

ball, another great effort.

A close game and timely reminder 

for the team, the next few weeks 

are going to be tough! 

1st quarter found us being beaten 

in all areas of the game by Preston, 

we were lacking intensity, fumbling 

the ball, dropping marks and missing 

that hardness at the contest, 

which left us 11 points down at 

quarter time. 

The 2nd quarter was a lot better, 

our defense across the back half 

tightened up, and the midfield 

were starting to get their hands 

on the ball, creating some shots on 

goal to get us in front at half time. 

3rd quarter saw us only kick 1 goal, 

thankfully we held Preston to just 2 

behinds, but it was a tough scrappy 

affair especially when the opposition 

totally floods your forward line. 

The last quarter was much the 

same as the previous one, with 

congestion at either ends of the 

ground making for scrappy play 

once again. The great thing about 

this was our ability to still find ways 

to score under this pressure. A few 

highlights were, Oscars first goal 

playing at full forward. Michael’s ferocious 

but fair tackles, and Liam’s 

gutsy hard at it! head over the ball 

attack on the footy, hopefully the 

rest of the team will match these 

efforts in the coming weeks. These 

are the sorta things i love to see 

and remember. Go Bloods!!
