We were away this week to Healesville 

minus Emma C, Courtney W, Maddie K 

& Dahlia A, 4 big outs and 1 inclusion, 

Zoe W made her comeback this week, 

We had 13 players and knew we were 

loosing Ella at half time, Healesville 

started fast scoring a goal early, We 

started the game of very slowly, playing 

from behind and rarely getting to 

the ball first, We won very few contest 

until late in the first, At this point we 

had conceded 1.1, And were yet to 

score, But we managed some forward 

pressure with some better work along 

the wings and into the fwd line and appeared 

to be the better of the 2 teams 

late in the 1 st , We asked the girls to play 

more accountable 1 on 1 footy going 

into the 2 nd , Be first to the contest and 

apply more tackling pressure, We gave 

a lot of frees away in the second as a 

result of our pressure, But managed to 

kick 2 straight goals and keep Healesville 

scoreless, Our first was a great 

snap by Charity after some great pressure 

fwd by the girls, and the 2 nd came 

after a Healesville girl went down with 

a leg injury, Play was stopped with 30 

seconds left, The bounce to resume 

was 40 out from our goal, The girls 

pressed hard and Dee scored within 

10 seconds of the restart and managed 

to lock the centre bounce down 

and see the clock out, We resumed the 

2 nd half minus Ella and felt we were 

slighty undermanned with Ella probably 

on track to play her best game of 

the season, Ella has threatened a big 

game and has been on the verge and 

on Saturday she was delivering, But in 

her absence the girls pressed on and 

lifted another notch in the second half, 

Chairty and her tackling was again on 

display, Zoe really came into the game 

in this half, Giving herself a couple 

chances of goaling, But just missed, 

Also apply fantastic fwd pressure locking 

the ball in at crucial stages, Imogen 

also looks likely to nail a goal or 2 very 

soon with some hard work up forward, 

Danni scored our only goal in the 

3 rd and alsohad a big impact, Louise 

moved into the middle and our centre 

clearances were a feature with Hailey 

in the ruck tapping it too Dee & Louise, 

We also missed 2 further chances 

in the 3 rd , But the signs were great, We 

looked angry, And we looked hungry, 

We conceded 1.1 and lead at 3qtr time 

by 13, The 4 th qtr was played with a lot 

of intensity and our pressure was fantastic, 

Again we dominated scoring 2.2 

, Charity and Dee scoring our 4 th & 5 th 

sealing the win, Healesville managed 

2.1 with one coming late in the game 

as a result of a free kick in the centre 

that resulted in a 50m penalty, Not a 

25m and a goal, With 2 mins remaining 

louise and the majority of the team 

dropped back to defend and safely 

run the clock down, Some excellent 

work by the back line with Sammy, Micaela, 

Amelia & Laura tackling and running 

hard when required, As a result of 

our great work through the middle the 

defense were able to push down and 

help keep the ball in the fwd zone, Hailey, 

Dee, & Maddy worked hard on the 

ball all day without a roatation, With 

Danni & Charity apllying the pressure 

and doubling up as mids from the half 

back line, All in all it was a very impressive 

effort and a direct result of playing 

accountable footy, We are really on the 

verge of being a very consisten team, 

You have all the tool to be very good, 

You just have to play with this attitude 

and commitment that you had against 

Healesville. Keep raising the bar, and 

dont settle for second unless you have 

given everything and cant do any 

more.

The under 9’s were back at home this 

week and playing Bulleen’s formidable 

Bullants. The boys were led out by our 

newest player Jasper as Captain. There 

was early scoring by the opposition and 

our team struggled to penetrate into our 

forward line in the first three quarters of 

the game. 

Courage was shown by Max Bell after 

copping a ball to his face only to play 

on with distinction. Calum and Jarrah 

tackled fiercely against some rather large 

opposition players. Adam Papez used his 

magic glove to great result whilst Troy 

and Seb found themselves under the pack 

getting their hands on the ball. Tackling 

featured heavily in this match and with 

some fast moving opposition players, our 

boys had to dispose of the ball fast! 

Good sportsmanship was displayed by 

Neils, Oscar Bennett, Jaxson and Hayden 

who played for the other team due to 

them being short on players. 

A rousing chat from the coach at third 

quarter time saw the Bloods come out 

fighting and scoring several goals in 

quick succession. Campbell and Tom 

Heffernan drove the ball towards our end 

with strong marking and accurate kicking 

and Noah finished it off with the goals. It 

wasn’t quite the result we wanted but the 

boys pulled together in the final quarter 

to show what they were capable of. 

Jarrah was awarded the opposition’s 

medal for player of the match and the 

agile Max Morley was our team’s choice 

for player of the day. The Bullants were 

a strong team that our boys learnt a lot 

from. Thanks to all the parent helpers at 

the match, including junior goal umpire

Conditions were fantastic on this 

gorgeous sunny winter’s morning 

for an away game for the Resicon 

Rangers U10 boys against top of 

the ladder opponents Hawthorn 

Citizens B. 

The opposition pulled away quick at 

the start with two goals in no time 

at all. We started off strong with 

Hayden breaking from the pack 

with a good kick, a mark and another 

awesome kick to score our first 

goal. Angus (not Mr Rodwell!) executed 

brilliant marks and long kicks 

and was described by coach Wheatley 

as a ‘steam train’ with 100% improvement! 

Josh was quick on the 

boot and kicked long. Kadyn, one 

of our smallest players, was declared 

10% tougher as he showed 

us what hard work was about and 

scored himself a blood nose. 

Zac, Nathan and Seb got in under 

the pack, outmaneuvered their opponents, 

and most often escaped 

unscathed, ball in hand and moved 

it on with great marks and kicks. 

Dante did really well staying ‘on 

his man’, Sam was tackle mad, had 

great hands and plenty of kicks, 

and Big Bad BJ was doing all that he 

could which paid off with a goal in 

the third quarter. Cam was applying 

plenty of fantastic pressure with 

2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts resulting in 

a goal in the second quarter, and 

Mitchell took off with a few bouncing 

runs demonstrating much courage. 

Coach Wheatley reiterated to the 

boys at half time a few pointers, 

‘everyone’s better than their player, 

use your voices, be quick bounce 

and go, salute our goals, shepherd, 

tackle hard and kick lots’. The pep 

talk helped and confidence was 

visibly restored in the boys. By the 

third quarter break, our tired boys 

were greatly in need of snakes to 

revive them. 

Luke gave great chase and managed 

a few good kicks in the last 

half, Jake got some good grabs and 

was key in moving the ball from the 

centre, Smithy demonstrated a nice 

kick in the first quarter and a great 

mark in the last quarter. Mark was 

taken down in a vigorous tackle 

but managed a great kick later in 

the game. Sharpe moved to open 

ground and marked the ball aplenty, 

while Oliver put in a great effort 

and got plenty of touches and Al 

knew no bounds and had a go anywhere 

approach resulting in touches 

and a great mark. 

Unfortunately, the opposition had a 

lot of tall players and demonstrated 

a great marking ability in this match. 

Our boys gave it a good crack, and 

busted their guts all throughout the 

game but unfortunately it was not 

meant to be. So, we live to fight another 

day!

players missing, only one win from 

the past six games, and an away 

game against our arch rivals made 

for a daunting proposition on 

Sunday, but the Bloods Under 11s 

weren’t about to let the odds get in 

the way when they came up against 

Kew. 

Before the game coach Owen 

Humphris urged his troops to unite 

and give everything they had for 

four quarters and the result would 

come. Despite a fierce assault by 

the home team in the first five minutes 

when they stormed forward 

time after time, the Bloods’ diehard 

defence led by the likes of Josh Luttick, 

Noah Kendal, Tynon Kontos 

and Harry Brown stood firm with

Then the floodgates opened as the 

Bloods machine clicked into top 

gear. Lewis Downie and Bailey Trevorrow 

were in everything gathering 

hard-get possessions at will, while 

Finn Swedosh started creating opportunities 

for the onballers and 

Austin Humphris was generating 

lots of run and hit the packs hard. 

Warrandyte stunned their opponents 

and slammed three goals on 

the board and suddenly had taken 

control of the game to lead by 14 

points at half time. 

The atmosphere was electric in the 

rooms at half-time and the players, 

and their family and friends, knew 

the Bloods were well and truly “on” 

by the looks on their faces and the 

positive talk in the rooms. And that 

mood transitioned back onto the 

field when Billy Podmore continued 

to take strong contested marks 

at centre half forward and feed his 

teammates deep into the forwardline, 

as his co-captian Marcus Green 

provided blistering pace and poise 

under pressure, as did speedster 

Lachie Pollock, while Lachie Haberfield, 

Ethan Ward and Michael Morena 

suddenly became invincible with 

their attack on the ball, great run 

and swift ball movement. 

The Bloods kicked away in the second 

half and the results was never 

in doubt as they stormed to an impressive 

24 point victory in one of 

their most united, four quarter efforts 

to date.

We had heard stories about the 

quality of our opponents and eagerly 

anticipated the game. The 

coaches had done the homework 

and it was up to the players to execute 

the plans. In a very tight 1st 

quarter, we were very pleased with 

our efforts with the 3 goal difference 

not reflective of our endeavours. 

The 2nd quarter showed us what 

can happen when we drop off intensity 

and fail to provide defensive 

pressure. Nine goals to none 

– enough said. 

What we saw in the 2nd half was really 

pleasing. Our backline held up 

against our opponent’s quality ball 

movement. Sam, Tim, Zane, Bodhi 

and Josh E attacked the ball and 

instigated many forward movements. 

Our mids lead by Steven, 

Andrew, Hayden, Jake and Ari were 

tireless and supplied quick moving 

ball to the forwards. Alex played a 

fantastic game up forward and was 

ably assisted by David, Caillen and 

Connor. Special mention to Leo for 

his courageous efforts. 

We managed to outscore our opponents 

in the 2nd half and show 

them that we belong in the top 

group of teams with the quality 

of play that we produced. There is 

still hope of a finals berth if we win 

our remaining games. Playing this 

standard of football for 4 quarters 

will be the key.

Tough day at the office for the 

team, with the top spot on the ladder 

up for grabs. 

Richmond played a very hard and 

physical game when it came to 

tackling and sheperding, a lot of 

our kids were on the receiving end 

of some let’s just say “hard stuff”. To 

our teams credit and own hardness 

they got back up, didn’t stop, kept 

on contesting and played the ball 

which was fantastic to see. 

For weeks now this game has been 

ever looming in the distance, I’ve 

watched and listened to our kids 

discussing the game at training 

and even outside of training over 

this period. Something that was 

pleasing to hear in these discussions 

was the “self belief” these kids 

have in themselves, and rightly so! 

This group of kids this season have 

shown confidence in their own 

abilities and a better understanding 

of the game followed by a mental 

toughness that I guess comes 

with a bit of maturity, well done on 

a great win! And to Roy Sisson who 

played 50th game, congratulations!
