STATUTE I<br />
Of the Foundation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong><br />
1. Whereas the <strong>College</strong> called <strong>Downing</strong> <strong>College</strong>, in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Cambridge</strong>, was originally intended mainly for the<br />
encouragement <strong>of</strong> the studies <strong>of</strong> Law and Medicine in all their<br />
branches, and <strong>of</strong> the cognate subjects <strong>of</strong> Moral and Natural<br />
Science, the <strong>College</strong> is now intended for the encouragement <strong>of</strong><br />
all subjects taught in the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
2. The Foundation shall consist <strong>of</strong> a Master, Fellows and Scholars.<br />
3. The <strong>College</strong> shall be known by the name <strong>of</strong> ‘The Master, Fellows,<br />
and Scholars <strong>of</strong> <strong>Downing</strong> <strong>College</strong> in the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Cambridge</strong>’; and under that modification <strong>of</strong> its original name<br />
shall retain its present property and possessions and continue<br />
to enjoy all powers and privileges conferred on it by its Charter<br />
or otherwise.<br />
4. The seniority <strong>of</strong> Members <strong>of</strong> the Foundation shall be taken as<br />
follows: first, the Master; then the Fellows, according to the date<br />
<strong>of</strong> admission to their Fellowships and not according to any<br />
degree; and lastly, the Scholars, in like order and manner.<br />
