Festival focuses on the
beauty of the Lemon Lily
Event: July 15-17
The 2nd Annual Lemon Lily Festival
will be held on July 15, 16, and 17
in the charming village of Idyllwild,
mile-high in the San Jacinto Mountain
range. More than 3,000 people attended
last year’s event to celebrate the restoration
of a precious native wildflower, the Lemon
Lily. Huell Howser even filmed last year’s
festival for his California Gold travel show
on KCET.
One hundred years ago, thousands of
Lemon Lilies (Lilium parryi) lived near
streams and wet meadows in Idyllwild.
Their beauty and scent attracted visitors
from all over Southern California. Unfortunately
bulb hunters dug them up and took
them off the mountain where they surely
died. In a multi-year restoration effort,
Idyllwild is cultivating this beautiful native
wildflower and restoring it to its original
habitat and historical range.
The Lemon Lily Festival focuses on the
plight of the Lemon Lily so that locals and
visitors will take it upon themselves to be
their guardians. A Pioneer Town will take
you back to Idyllwild a century ago when
the Lemon Lilies proliferated, helping to
focus attention on the need for conservation
and restoration of this precious wildflower.
The Idyllwild Nature Center, a Lemon Lily
Viewing Tour, and a high-country hike will
provide activities that focus on the natural
environment in which the Lemon Lily
flourishes. This includes seminars on the
Lemon Lily, riparian nature walks to see
where this native wildflower lives along Lily
Creek, art and crafts focused on the beauty
of the lily, and children’s carnival games
with a Lemon Lily theme.
Throughout Idyllwild there will be
music, art, food, nature and fun. Free
shuttles will carry you to all Festival
venues. Young and old will gain a better appreciation
of the importance of protecting
the mountain environment.
