Growing Maize Under Film The Samco System was developed to provide dairy farmers in Ireland a more reliable way of cultivating forage maize. The Samco System provides extra heat during the first few weeks of growth when the plant is often challenged by cold temperatures. Over the course of the growing year the System significantly increases heat accumulation which either brings forward the harvest date or increases the yield depending upon the variety sown. Samco and Maizetech have worked closely with Pioneer for many years to understand exactly how different varieties behave when sown under film. This work has become increasingly important as the effect that some of the new Samco films have on the behaviour of different Pioneer varieties. Such effects have been shown to be particularly valuable in marginal areas or seasons with low amounts of accumulated heat. The thin plastic film creates a microclimate for the maize seeds as they germinate and grow. This micro-climate increases the crop’s ability to survive during periods of cold temperatures and frost compared to that of crops sown in the open. It has been shown in independent trials that the temperature of the air and soil underneath the film can rise rapidly after sowing, and early growth and establishment can be significantly advanced. Extensive trials and commercial experience have shown that certain maize hybrids are more suited to sowing under film than others. Some are clearly unsuitable. The Pioneer hybrids JUSTINA and BENICIA have been extensively grown under film with prominent commercial success and have become the backbone of the system. The main features of all the different Pioneer hybrids intended for cultivating with the Samco System are described below: P7892 This very early maturing, high starch content hybrid is intended for Samco System growers on the most marginal sites located in the coolest areas of the region e.g. South West Scotland, Northern Ireland. P7631 For growers in many areas of the UK & Ireland who are seeking an early harvest with a very high starch content silage. P7631 is between one and two weeks earlier to mature than JUSTINA and has shown very good resistance to Eyespot (Aureobasidium zeae). Independent research has demonstrated that The Samco System provides the potential for significant yield increases and/or earlier harvest dates in the maize crop. P7905 This large stature hybrid is new for 2013. P7905 is slightly earlier to mature than JUSTINA but in trials so far 19
