Growing Maize Under Film
has produced higher starch content silage and slightly
higher dry matter yields.
JUSTINA
JUSTINA continues to provide benchmark yield and
quality performance for any grower planting under the
Samco System. It penetrates film easily and responds to
the extra heat generated in the soil. JUSTINA is a dual
purpose hybrid and can be grown for silage or grain.
to selecting a suitable hybrid it is important that
appropriate advice is sought on all the other appropriate
crop management techniques relevant to this method of
cultivation.
PR39T83
After 4 years of PACTS Trials over 29 locations PR39T83
has proven itself to be a winner in terms of delivering
higher dry matter yields from the Samco System. The
tendency of this large stature hybrid to produce two even
sized cobs is largely responsible for its yield success.
PR39T83 is between one and two weeks later to mature
than JUSTINA.
P8261
A large stature hybrid intended for producing grain
and high starch silage crops. Over three years and 19
locations of silage trials it has given a higher starch yield
and dry matter yield than JUSTINA.
PR39A98
This tall, large stature hybrid has given high dry matter
yields under film. It penetrates film very easily and is
aimed at growers looking to maximise silage dry matter
yields. PR39A98 is one to two weeks later to mature than
JUSTINA.
BENICIA
BENICIA is renowned for its popularity with growers
looking for a big return from their investment in the
Samco System. BENICIA is a large stature hybrid that
grows well in the UK & Ireland climate under film and
can produce crops of silage or grain. BENICIA is two
weeks later to mature than JUSTINA.
PR38Y34
PR38Y34 has given very high silage dry matter yields
when grown under film. This tall hybrid is one week later
to mature than BENICIA and is intended for planting on
favourable sites where a later harvest is acceptable.
Samuel J. Shine of Samco Agricultural
Manufacturing Ltd
‘A fundamental part of the Samco System is the use of
maize hybrids that we know are suited for cultivation
under film’ says Sam Shine of Samco. ‘Samco and
Maizetech work closely with Pioneer and their PACTS
Trials programme to identify hybrids that respond
significantly to the conditions that exist under the film
and learn how to manage them in the field. JUSTINA
and BENICIA were the first Pioneer hybrids that we
identified as being key ones for The Samco System.
Now other hybrids such as PR39T83, P7631, P7905
and PR39A98 have also shown a consistent ability to
provide extra yield from the Samco System, even in
years of low temperatures.’
The agronomic practices required for cultivating
maize under film vary significantly to those normally
adopted when cultivating maize in the open. In addition
NOTE: All Pioneer PACTS variety plots planted under film in the UK & Ireland have been sown using the Samco
System. The Samco System incorporates the use of a specific type of planter and also films tested and approved
by Samco. It should not be assumed that the types of yield responses shown in this book will be obtained when
using either a different make of planter and/or films that have not been tested and approved by Samco.
