LAKEVIEW LIONS DEN MAY/JUNE 2011
Principal’s Message
Our May/June issue will be our final Lions Den for the 2010-11 school year. As the weather warms and
the daylight extends into evening hours, we are reminded that summer and the end of our school year is
close at hand. With that thought, please make sure your child attends school every day, on time! This is
the period of time that children make those solid connections based on ALL the knowledge and skills
they have acquired over the school year!! Our teachers are committed to provide instruction every day
until the end of the school year…please make a similar commitment to have your child in school until
their final day.
As we begin the planning process for the 2011-12 school year, our Lakeview family will continue our
schoolwide looping program. To review, looping is a process in which the teacher moves with his/her
students to the next grade level, rather than sending the students to another teacher at the end of the school
year. The students and the teacher remain together as the class is promoted to the next grade level. At the
end of the second year of the looping pattern, the students move on to a new teacher, while the looping
teacher returns to the lower grade level to receive a new group of students. The schoolwide looping staff
assignments for the 2011-12 school year are as follows:
4K – Mrs. Beattie (new students)
5K – Ms. O’Brien (new students)
5K – Mrs. Kitchin (new students)
5K – Ms. Swick (new students)
1 st grade – Mrs. Brever (loops w/ her students)
1 st grade – Mrs. Hirthe (loops w/her students)
3 rd grade – Mrs. Busalacchi (loops w/ his students)
3 rd grade – Mrs. Koscielniak (loops w/ her students)
3 rd grade – Ms. Robb (loops w/her students)
2 nd grade – Mrs. Smith (new students)
2 nd grade – Mr. Tinsen (new students) 5 th grade – Mr. Bigley (loops w/ her students)
TILL WE MEET AGAIN
Dear parents and families,
I have enjoyed working with your families, sharing concerns, celebrations, successes, frustrations, fears
and grief, over these past twelve years together as your children develop to be the best they can be! Connecting
and growing with your families has been an honor and pleasure. Lakeview will always hold a special place in my
heart. I have loved your families, like my second family, and I will miss you. I will always think of you and wish the
best for you and your families. Your students will forever be engraved in my heart!
Thank you for the recognition with the trio of retirements at our Ice Cream Social/Art Show. I was deeply
touched by your presence and your generosity! Your gifts of the star globe, little jewelry box with my name on,
and the locket necklace, along with the beautiful flower basket, will be cherished as special remembrance gifts!
Respectfully and with great affection,
Laura Duvernell
Dear Lakeview Families and Parent Team,
Working with your sons and daughters, as well as their older siblings throughout my career
at Lakeview has been a joy. It always made me happy to see former students bringing their
children to registration in August. We all know how wonderful Lakeview School is. Over the years
I’ve come to know you not only as parents of students attending Lakeview School but also as
friends. I will miss you all.
The beautiful gifts and flowers I received from you at the Art Show/Ice Cream Social will
be proudly displayed in my home and I will think of you whenever I look at them. Thank you very
much for your kindness and generosity.
I’m not going to say good-bye ~ I will just say “till we meet again.” I’m sure I’ll see many of
you somewhere at sometime in the community.
I wish you sunny days and happiness,
Sharon Brown
Dear Lakeview Family Members and PTO staff-‐-‐-‐-‐
Before I pack away all of my crayons and markers , I would like to take the time now to convey
my deepest appreciation and gratitude to the students and parents of our Lakeview Community on
many levels.
Thank You for supporting our Arts program! I hope that you enjoyed the annual Spring Art Shows
where your talented children have so proudly displayed their incredible art projects over the years.
Please keep your child/children's precious art for it reflects their uniqueness and will grow in "heart"
value as they mature!
Thank you for the "silverlicious" gifts and elegant flowers given to the "retiree colleagues" and I at
last week's Art Show / Ice Cream Social. These beautiful gifts will be an everlasting reminder to me of
the many "sparkling and delight-‐filled" moments I shared with the folks and children here at Lakeview
School! Together we discovered that learning is indeed FUN!
Thank you for the opportunity to imagine and create with so many wonderful and talented
children during the past 32 years! My position as an art educator has been rich with intangible rewards
that will sustain an everlasting "rainbow glow" in my heart for years to come. I truly loved teaching Art
at Lakeview School -‐-‐-‐ it is my home away from home!
As we march forward into the future, take time to color and create ART together as a family.
And may peace, love, happiness and success complete your family portrait!
With much respect and affection,
Debbie Thatcher

CHILD FIND
The School District of South Milwaukee must locate, identify, and evaluate all resident children
with disabilities, including children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the
severity of their disabilities. The school district has a special education screening program to
locate and screen all children with suspected disabilities who are residents of the district and who
have not graduated from high school. Upon request the school district will screen any resident
child who has not graduated high school to determine whether a special education referral is
appropriate. A request may be made by contacting John Kaufman, Pupil Services Coordinator,
South Milwaukee School District at (414) 766-5041 or in writing at 901 Fifteenth Avenue, South
Milwaukee, WI 53172.
A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker or administrator of a social agency who
reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a
legal duty to report the child to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the
child, the person making the referral must inform the child’s parent that the referral will be made.
The referral must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child
with a disability. Others who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also
refer the child to the school district in which the child resides. A referral of a child residing in
the School District of South Milwaukee may be sent to Pupil Services Office, 901 Fifteenth
Avenue, South Milwaukee, WI 53172.
Guidance Gazette
May, 2011
Dear Parents,
This past month, our guidance topic was on Career Exploration. We discussed jobs
we do everyday both at home and in school. As helpers at home, many students
shared that some set the table and do dishes, others clean their room, rake leaves, take
out garbage and recyclables, sweep/mop the kitchen floor, fold clean wash, or feed and
clean up after their pet. Some even earn money for jobs such as babysitting, washing a
car, lawn care, or snow shoveling (~no more this year, hopefully!).
We discussed the responsibilities of good work habits, which are skills we are learning
and practicing everyday. They include: doing your best, being trustworthy, able to work
independently, cooperatively with others, following directions, having good attendance,
arriving on time each day and using good manners. I tell students that their smile and
their attitude also make for a better work environment AND school environment! We
practiced smiling with our neighboring classmate. I told them that usually, when you
greet someone with a smile, it makes others smile too! ~It’s contagious! ~And
sunshine is a wonderful thing to pass onto others!
We are preparing your students for the world of work. I encouraged students to go
home and talk to their parents, grandparents and relatives about their career path.
~Share what you like about jobs you have worked at in your past and also share what
you don’t like at your job as well. This may help your child with their ability to reflect on
their personal choices. Right now, they are beginning to discover about many different
jobs and options. They may change their mind tomorrow, and that’s certainly ok! Even
adults may change their jobs 6 or 8 times (or more) during their lifetime!
~It is valuable for all of us to discuss our children’s interests and ideas for their future!
After watching a fun Dr. Seuss video describing many different jobs they might want to
consider, all students got a chance to share one or two ideas of their choices for jobs.
You may want to ask them what they shared with the class when asked: “What do you
want to be when you grow up?”

Respectfully,
Mrs. Duvernell,
younger) as:
• Children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and
includes children and youth who are:
− sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or
a similar reason (sometimes referred to as double-up);
− living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of alternative
adequate accommodations;
− living in emergency or transitional shelters;
− abandoned in hospitals; or
substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.
• Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances
the above criteria, the School District of South Milwaukee provides the following assurances to
parents of homeless children:
