<strong>Building</strong> Potential: Special Events & Highlights<br />

2005 Youth <strong>of</strong> the Year Juan Pimentel, 18, was selected as the 2005 Southern California <strong>Boys</strong><br />

& <strong>Girls</strong> Club Youth <strong>of</strong> the Year. He was selected for his leadership abilities <strong>and</strong> the positive<br />

example he sets for other young people. Juan praises BGCOP saying, “It made me the person<br />

I am today.” Juan is a 10-year member <strong>of</strong> the Club <strong>and</strong> has been a staff member since he was<br />

15, serving currently as the Learning Center director <strong>at</strong> the Port Hueneme Center. His goal is<br />

to obtain a chemical engineering degree from UC Santa Barbara, “so I can help those in need<br />

<strong>of</strong> a medicine th<strong>at</strong> could save their lives.”<br />

15th Annual Donald K. Facciano KidsAuction BGCOP celebr<strong>at</strong>ed “50 Remarkable Years” on<br />

November 20, 2004, with the 15th Annual Donald K. Facciano KidsAuction. Nearly 300 guests<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ed in silent <strong>and</strong> live auctions to help support the more than 6,700 members served<br />

by the 14 Club sites in Oxnard <strong>and</strong> Port Hueneme. The event netted more than $188,000 in<br />

support <strong>of</strong> BGCOP.<br />

3rd Annual Campaign for Kids Breakfast The 3rd Annual Campaign for Kids Breakfast raised<br />

$108,000 to support BGCOP <strong>and</strong> its programs. More than 245 <strong>at</strong>tendees came to the Residence<br />

Inn by Marriot on March 8, 2005, to hear Dr. Michele Borba, a world-renowned speaker <strong>and</strong><br />

author, whose keynote speech was about parenting <strong>and</strong> children’s issues. Also <strong>at</strong> the breakfast,<br />

Loren Bloch received the Harriet H. Samuelsson <strong>Child</strong>ren’s Champion Award in recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

his work on behalf <strong>of</strong> children in Gre<strong>at</strong>er Oxnard <strong>and</strong> Port Hueneme.<br />

13th Annual “Fore the Kids” Golf Classic A field <strong>of</strong> golfers from across Southern California<br />

joined together on the greens <strong>of</strong> Spanish Hills Country Club in Camarillo to raise more than<br />

$45,000 for BGCOP programs. The 170 participants set a record for the highest golfer turn out<br />

for the event.<br />

Harley Davidson Raffle The 3rd Annual Harley Davidson Raffle netted $30,000 for BGCOP. Of<br />

the 1,037 tickets sold, Maria Concetta Paez’s ticket was drawn for the motorcycle. John Laing<br />

Homes won the 48-inch HDTV <strong>and</strong> don<strong>at</strong>ed it back to BGCOP. The winners were announced<br />

<strong>at</strong> the 15th Annual Donald K. Facciano KidsAuction.<br />

Tsunami Relief Fund The Movers & Shakers Keystone Club raised $2,500 for the Tsunami<br />

Relief Fund. The group placed five-gallon w<strong>at</strong>er jugs <strong>at</strong> various <strong>Clubs</strong> from February 23 –<br />

March 23, 2005, to collect loose change. The group achieved its goal by collecting 250 pounds<br />

<strong>of</strong> change to help Tsunami victims.<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ional KidsDay The Dallas Cowboys joined more than 1,200 guests for BGCOP’s KidsDay<br />

2004 festivities on August 1. Families played games <strong>at</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> booths <strong>and</strong> took part in other<br />

fun activities <strong>at</strong> two loc<strong>at</strong>ions, the Martin V. Smith Youth Center <strong>and</strong> the Cowboys’ training<br />

camp <strong>at</strong> the Residence Inn by Marriott in Oxnard. N<strong>at</strong>ional KidsDay was cre<strong>at</strong>ed by <strong>Boys</strong> &<br />

<strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>of</strong> America <strong>and</strong> KidsPeace in 2001 to help build stronger rel<strong>at</strong>ionships between<br />

children <strong>and</strong> adults.<br />

Digital Arts Festival Two BGCOP members won awards <strong>at</strong> the Pacific Region ImageMakers<br />

2005 Photo Contest, held June 20-24, 2005, in San Francisco. Taylor Arthur, 8, <strong>and</strong> Danyelle<br />

Stahl, 10, placed first <strong>and</strong> second, respectively, in the photo essay c<strong>at</strong>egory <strong>of</strong> the contest.<br />

BGCOP Wins Top Marketing Award BGCOP was awarded the bronze MAC Award in the<br />

Web site c<strong>at</strong>egory by the <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> <strong>Clubs</strong> <strong>of</strong> America, April 30, 2005, <strong>at</strong> the 99th Annual<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ional Conference held in San Diego. The award recognizes the <strong>Boys</strong> & <strong>Girls</strong> Club th<strong>at</strong> has<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ed the most cre<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>and</strong> compelling Web site.
