Ground-Breaking New Programs Power Hour After-School Program Power Hour provides members ages 6 to 18 with tutoring and homework assistance. The program was developed in response to parents wanting to reinforce better study habits for their children. The program is funded by a $5,000 donation received in 2004 from the J.C. Penney Afterschool Fund, which enabled the Club to purchase books, supplies and homework incentives and for the Power Hour coordinator to attend training in Atlanta. Youth Empowerment Program In 2004, BGCOP became a new provider for the Workforce Investment Board of Ventura County with its Youth Empowerment Program (YEP), which serves 200 youth ages 14 to 21 in the Oxnard Plains area. YEP uses award-winning, nationally recognized curricula to teach youth strategies and techniques for obtaining and maintaining employment in their chosen fields. Get Into SHAPE! BGCOP introduced a new program to help fight childhood obesity and the health risks associated with it. Starting Healthy Activities and Physical Education (SHAPE) is offered thanks to a $195,000 grant from the California Endowment. Through SHAPE, members learn new and fun fitness activities and healthy eating habits they can share with their families. Engineering Entrepreneurs The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship Program (NFTE – pronounced “nifty”) is helping youth in low-income communities learn the business, academic and life skills necessary to be economically productive. The program also connects participants with employers and the community to provide them with relevant, real world experience. The rules and staff helped me become a better person and helped me gain confidence.” −Miguel S., 16 A nearly $1.2 million renovation plan for the Harriet H. Samuelsson Branch located on 7th Street in downtown Oxnard has begun, thanks to generous support from businesses and individuals. Scheduled to reopen in March 2006, the 7th Street facility closed January 2003 due to unsafe conditions existing within the 50-year-old facility. When the renovation is complete, Club members will enjoy the addition of new technology and Job and Career Centers, as well as a climbing wall located in the 7,000-square-foot gym. The Harriet H. Samuelsson Branch renovation is made possible by BGCOP fund-raising efforts and a partnership between developers, Standard Pacific Corp., Centex Homes and Shea Homes (known as RiverPark Legacy Partners, LLC). Laying the Cornerstones for Success Each year, private fund raising ensures 6,500 kids have access to quality programs and that we never have to turn away a child due to economic hardship. We rely on private contributions to ensure our programs are six days a week, year round, and to offer programs and facilities dedicated to all youth.
Reinforcing the Community: Brick by Brick BGCOP maintains 14 facilities throughout Oxnard and Port Hueneme that are open daily, giving youth the opportunity to participate in activities right in their own back yard. Smith Branch Affordable housing site: · Squires Public Housing Extension After-school sites: · El Rio Elementary School · Rio Lindo Elementary School Providing youth the tools for success Offering more than 72 hours a week of programmed activities year round, the BGCOP delivers a wide variety of programs for youth ages 6 to 18 that foster learning in a supervised, enjoyable environment. Activities and programs are designed to empower all youth by building confidence and leadership skills, while exposing them to the numerous opportunities available to them. These programs enhance the youths’ school education, providing them with the life skills they need to be successful adults. BGCOP programs for members focus on the following five areas of child development: Education and Career Development Homework help, state-of-the-art technology, one-on-one tutoring, educational competitions, job training, college visits and career exploration Sports, Fitness and Recreation Individual and group participation in games and sports, league sports, regional competitions, tournaments, organized and wacky games, special events, field trips and movies The Arts Arts and crafts, photography, drama and theatrical production, performing arts, music and cultural field trips Character and Leadership Development Leadership clubs, volunteer and community service projects, monthly recognition programs, values sessions and mentoring programs Health and Life Skills Life skills, mentoring, ability awareness and environmental education, as well as prevention programs to reduce the risk of alcohol and drug use · Rio Plaza Elementary School · Rio Real Elementary School · Rio Rosales Elementary School · Rio del Norte Elementary School · Rio del Valle Junior High School · Julien Hathaway Elementary School · Art Haycox Elementary School · Ansgar Larsen Elementary School Club programs and activities are also offered on five campuses of the Oxnard Unified High School District.
