Grantees compensat<strong>in</strong>g all end users for time spent <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g were significantly<br />

more likely to implement or cont<strong>in</strong>ue to use their technology than grantees<br />

compensat<strong>in</strong>g some or no end users. Only 20 percent of grantees offered any<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended users cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education credits for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g—an offer which signals<br />

that the organization values the participant’s learn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> may <strong>in</strong>crease buy-<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Fifty-one percent of the implementation grantees provided tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g more than<br />

2 weeks before go-live, risk<strong>in</strong>g memory loss of the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g content. Several grantees who were<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviewed reported that ongo<strong>in</strong>g tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activities beyond <strong>in</strong>itial tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g facilitated successful use<br />

of the health <strong>IT</strong>.<br />

Intended end users were also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> or at least tra<strong>in</strong>ed on workflow redesign.<br />

“Us<strong>in</strong>g health <strong>IT</strong> is not just about how <strong>and</strong> which button to push, it’s about how to <strong>in</strong>corporate<br />

it <strong>in</strong>to workflow <strong>and</strong> how to do so efficiently.”<br />

Eighty-five percent of grantees performed process redesign before implementation, with 26 percent<br />

report<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tensive process redesign at that stage.<br />

There was a statistically nonsignificant pattern <strong>in</strong> which grantees that performed <strong>in</strong>tensive process<br />

redesign prior to health <strong>IT</strong> implementation reported experienc<strong>in</strong>g quality or efficiency benefits more<br />

than other grantees at the time of the survey (75 percent vs. 55 percent).<br />
