GOLF Friday, May 17 was a great day to play in the annual Raider Alumni Golf Tournament. Held at Chateau Estates Golf Club, the tournament had a large number of Archbishop Rummel alumni golfers beginning the day with a great lunch before they headed to the Chateau golf course. They played the course, faced challenges, and enjoyed refreshments throughout the course. At course’s end, the golfers went inside the Country Club for meal number two as winners were named, prizes raffled, and friendships were rekindled. Once again, it was a great time to be an Archbishop Rummel alumnus. ALUMNI PRIESTS The number of alumni answering God’s call to priesthood continues to grow as several Archbishop Rummel graduates are entering the seminary or have recently been ordained to serve the Church. On June 1, Travis Clark, ‘01, now Fr. Travis Clark, was ordained a priest by Archbishop Gregory Aymond at an ordination ceremony at St. Louis Cathedral. Two weeks earlier, alumni Charles Dussouy, ‘02, and Tim Hedrick, ‘00, were ordained transitional deacons by Archbishop Aymond. And one year ago, alums Kyle Sanders, ‘03, and Kurt Young, ‘05, were ordained as priests at the Cathedral. Starting with the new school year, Fr. Kurt Young will be the first alum sent back to serve as school chaplain. Other Archbishop Rummel alumni currently in seminary formation Deacons Tim Hedrick, ’00, and Charles Dussouy, ‘02 are Chris Gros, ‘01, and Alex Albert, ‘06. They will be joined by two other alumni who are entering the seminary this fall to prepare for the priesthood: Kyle George, ‘08, and Andrew Gutierrez, ‘11. SPORTS AWARDS As the end-of-year school awards ceremonies continued through May, athletes gathered in the Raider gym for the annual Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony. Six different teams were recognized by their head coaches and athletes received recognition, awards, and much applause. At the end of the ceremony, the top awards were named by Mr. Phil Greco, athletic director. He named senior David Bienvenu (left) as winner of the Carl Avrard award, senior Damian Williams as recipient of the Rufus award, and Matthew Brennan as winner of the Father Wayne Roca award. 12 :: Archbishop Rummel High School Alumni Association
CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS The just completed school year was a great one for Raider athletics. At the end of the school year, the school hockey team won the state championship by defeating the Gulf Coast boys’ hockey team in Lafayette, 5-4. Coach Travis Olivier, ‘02, and his hockey team received congratulations from the school. Earlier in the school year Coach Matt Caire, ’03, and his Raider bowling team repeated as state champions. Also in Lafayette, the defending state champs won via an 18-9 victory over Morgan City. As with the hockey team, the Raider bowlers received congratulations from the Raider family. In the beginning of the school year, the Raider football team enjoyed a perfect pre-playoff record and entered the state playoffs as the number one team in state. With victories throughout the playoffs, the Raiders faced Barbe of Lake Charles for the 5A state championship. Before a massive Raider crowd in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, ’81 alum Jay Roth’s Raiders stymied the Barbe Buccaneers, 35-14, and won the school’s first state football championship.
