The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is the lead trade
association for the retail sector and the authoritative
voice of the industry to policy makers and the media.
We campaign to promote and defend retailers’ interests,
and advise retailers of threats and opportunities to their
business. We also look to improve the perceptions of
retailing in the UK.
Retail is one of the UK’s success stories, but currently
faces a challenging trading and regulatory environment.
The BRC’s aim is to bring about policy and regulatory
changes that will ensure retailers can maintain their
outstanding record on job creation, consumer choice and
product innovation.
The importance of the retail sector to UK cannot be
overestimated.
10 reasons why the BRC is a
must join for every retailer
“It is important that retailers unite behind the BRC so that we
have one voice speaking for the industry.”
Charlie Mayfield, Chairman, John Lewis Partnership
There are many benefits to your organisation
of being a member of the most influential retail
trade association in the UK, including:
1 Influence
BRC members are part of a powerful, unified
retail voice. They drive and shape the retail
agenda whilst making sure their own business
priorities are represented. All retail members
are invited to input into the BRC’s influential
Policy Action Groups.
www.brc.org.uk/brc_policies_and_issues.asp
2Lobbying and
Representation
The BRC acts as our members’ public affairs
teams at Westminster, Edinburgh, Cardiff,
Belfast and Brussels. Our dedicated policy
teams tirelessly campaign and lobby for the
retail sector ensuring that the industry’s voice
is heard at the highest level.
www.brc.org.uk/brc_public_affairs.asp
Political Intelligence
3
Through the BRC, our retail members obtain
direct access to the key political decision
makers. The viewpoint of our members,
as well as that of the whole sector, can be
brought to the attention of MPs, MSPs, MEPs
and senior civil servants.
4Advice and Guidance
Our members often use the BRC for
information on complex legislative issues and
implications for their businesses, saving them
the need to employ expensive consultants.
5Emergency Incidents
The BRC is the official Government contact
on behalf of the retail sector for incidents
- everything from weather disruption to
food contamination. We can give you timely,
accurate information, lobby for the relaxation
of legislation and provide a confidential forum
where you can share your experiences and
problems with other retailers.
Retail Membership Information
“The BRC is the most influential organisation for all home
shopping and online retailers where the existing regulations
are often inappropriate for this dynamic and fast-growing channel.”
Alan White, former Chief Executive, N Brown Group
6 Media
The BRC’s Press Office is the first port of call
for national and regional journalists seeking
opinion on retail industry news stories. Over
the decades, we have built strong relationships
with key media players and put across
continuously the views of the retailer to the
press, and TV and radio stations across the UK.
www.brc.org.uk/brc_news.asp
7Business Information
Key economic data is produced by the BRC’s
Business Information Department, including
the influential BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor.
The department is also a gateway to a wealth
of facts, figures and statistics on the retail
sector. Members with any questions relating
to retail can ask the BRC and we’ll do our best
to find the answers.
www.brc.org.uk/bis
8 Networking
The BRC holds networking events throughout
the year, including the prestigious BRC Annual
Retail Industry Dinner and Parliamentary
Receptions. These events are an ideal forum
for our members to meet up and discuss the
latest industry issues.
www.brc.org.uk/brc_events.asp
9Bank of England
Meetings
The BRC has quarterly meetings with the
Bank of England to inform the Bank about the
state of trading and economic issues facing the
sector. Members are encouraged to attend
these meetings together with the BRC to
speak, in confidence, about their current views
of the sector and implications for trading.
Cost Savings
“I would like to say a big thank you to the British Retail Consortium
our case to government.”
upcoming, legislative work that the BRC is
company directors, contains headline policy
news to keep members informed about our
major lobbying issues. The format is optimised
for ease of reading on BlackBerrys and handheld
devices.
3Retail Sales Monitor (RSM)
The BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor (RSM)
is a key UK economic indicator that has been
in operation for over a decade. The RSM
measures monthly retail sales returns by value
in both like-for-like and total formats across
12 product categories. It also provides the first
authoritative financially based commentary on
retail sales each month, providing government
and the public with a greater understanding of
the state and the relevance of the industry.
4ONLINE RETAIL SALES
MONITOR (ORSM)
The BRC-KPMG Online Retail Sales Monitor
(ORSM) is an accurate measure of online
retail sales performance that acts as both a
benchmark for participating retailers and as
an economic indicator. The ORSM measures
changes in the actual value of non-food
transactions which take place over the
internet, or via mail order or phone, based
on figures supplied directly by participating
members. It is a guide to the growth of nonfood
sales made by all non-store channels. It
provides a greater understanding of the way in
which online is changing the way we shop.
5Shop Price Index (SPI)
The BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index (SPI)
provides an indicator of the direction of price
changes in retail outlets. The BRC launched
the SPI to give an accurate picture of the
inflation faced by shoppers on 500 of the
most commonly bought items in shops which
are representative of the most commonly
purchased in stores.
6FOOTFALL AND VACANCIES
Monitor (FM)
The BRC/Springboard Retail Footfall Monitor
(FM) gathers data on customer activity in
town and city centre locations, and in outof-town
shopping locations throughout the
UK using the latest generation automated
technology. The FM covers the main centre in
each nation/region and a representative sample
of secondary and smaller town centres. The
FM is the first authoritative measure on retail
footfall across both town centres and out-oftown
locations. Every quarter, the FM includes
national vacancy (ie empty shops) rates.
7Economic Briefing Report
(EBR)
The Economic Briefing Report brings together
key economic and consumer indicators
relevant to the retail industry from a variety of
sources, giving our members a vital insight into
the how the performance of the economy has
affected the retail sector and the mood of the
consumer, while examining the contribution
the sector has made to the economy.
Quarterly
1Retail Employment
Monitor (REM)
The BRC-Bond Dickinson Retail Employment
Monitor (REM) measures changes and trends
in retail sector employment over time. The
REM provides economic analysis of the
wider labour market in the UK and how this
compares with the retail sector - the UK’s
largest private sector employer.
2Online Retail Monitor
(ORM)
The BRC-Google Online Retail Monitor
(ORM) measures changes and trends in the
growth of retail search terms over time.
There are a number of metrics the Monitor
measures, for example, the growth of mobile
retail searches. The mobile measure includes
smartphone and tablet searches.
3Quarterly Trend Analysis
(QTA)
The Quarterly Trend Analysis report analyses
all three RSMs and our UK Shop Price Index
over the previous quarter, relating them to the
various statistics, research and data on how the
industry is performing. The QTA also provides
an on-going data series linking consumer
confidence, price inflation and footfall, while
giving an indication of conversion rates
between footfall and spend.
