B2. Testing the Battery
B2 Conventional Testing - Battery with removable vent plugs
Note
In a good battery, the specific gravity(sg) reading should be the same in all cells.
The expected tolerance between all 6 cells is 0.03g/cc (e.g. range 1.26g/cc min, 1.29g/cc max).
When charging the battery always follow the instructions supplied with the charger.
After charging a flat battery, insufficient charging may lead to insufficient acid mixing of the electrolyte above the plates.
Using a multimeter, confirm stabilised measured voltage matches the voltage calculated from specific acid gravity measurement
(Average sg + 0.84 ) x 6 should be equal to measured voltage if the acid is sufficiently mixed.
B2
Measure Voltage and record acid sg in ALL cells
Example 12.6V
1.26, 1.27, 1.26, 1.27, 1.26, 1.27
B2.1 Cell Short
Circuit
Is there one cell with
a low specific gravity?
Example Readings
1.26 1.15 1.26 1.27 1.26 1.27
YES
Dead Cell
Battery is defective =>
ACCEPT CLAIM
B2.2 Service
Overcharging
Is the acid discoloured (dark brown) and/or
there is evidence of excessive water
consumption ?
YES
Damage
caused by
overcharge
