Using Force and Torque Measurement Technology When assembling connectors and similar products, the use of fully-automated production systems is often not economical. As a result, the classical manual press is still frequently found in this area. The maXYmos BL XY-monitor enables these presses to be easily and cheaply upgraded with a force-displacement monitoring system. A high-frequency connector has to undergo numerous manufacturing processes before an end client can use it. One such process is the joining of an insulation sleeve to the center conductor. Upgrading existing rack and pinion presses with a force-displacement monitoring system consisting of a highly sensitive piezoelectric force sensor, a potentiometer-type displacement sensor and an XY-monitor from the maXYmos BL series will enable these manufacturing processes to be continually monitored. This should ensure that the end client receives a product that has been monitored throughout the manufacturing process and is consequently free of faults. When fitting the insulation sleeve to the center conductor, the press force over its length and the position of the center conductor are monitored. If it is placed the wrong way in the holder, this will be recognized by the fact that it reaches the block position early. The reason for this lies in the asymmetric design of the center conductor: its collar, against which the sleeve is pressed, is not located exactly in the middle. If it is inserted incorrectly, the insulation sleeve will be pressed on incorrectly. The XY-monitor detects this immediately from the force-displacement diagram of the press-fitting curve: The force signal increases earlier at the end of the block. A suitably selected and positioned maXYmos BL evaluation object, in this case a UNI-BOX, evaluates this block position. If the center conductor is inserted incorrectly, the curve will lie outside this BOX and the maXYmos BL will signal NOK on the lamps. The operator must reject the part.
