ARCGIS LICENSING OPTIONS<br />

This chapter examines the steps required to successfully install, authorize, build,<br />

and deploy an application with the <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> <strong>Developer</strong> Kit. The steps<br />

covered are installation, registration, and authorization of the <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong><br />

<strong>Developer</strong> Kit and <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> Runtime; license configuration of custom<br />

applications; testing custom applications with <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> Runtime; and<br />

deploying custom applications to a end users.<br />

KEY DEFINITIONS<br />

<strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> <strong>Developer</strong> Kit: A component-based software developer product for<br />

building and deploying custom GIS and mapping applications.<br />

<strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> Runtime: An end user product that must be installed on any machine<br />

a custom application developed using the <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> <strong>Developer</strong> Kit is<br />

deployed to.<br />

Licensing: The grant to a party of the right to use a software package or component.<br />

Copy Protection: The mechanism used to license the <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> <strong>Developer</strong> Kit<br />

or <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> Runtime on a per-machine, single-use basis via an ESRI Copy<br />

Protection (*.ecp) file.<br />

Software Authorization: Configuring the <strong>ArcGIS</strong> <strong>Engine</strong> <strong>Developer</strong> Kit or <strong>ArcGIS</strong><br />

<strong>Engine</strong> Runtime with an ESRI Copy Protection (*.ecp) file to ‘unlock’ the underlying<br />

software components for use.<br />

Deployment: The installation of a component or application to a target machine.<br />
