20 packaging Content Protection in transparent packaging Improved product quality and extended product shelf life are increasing packaging requirements. The use of plastics in convenience packaging is growing, so improved plastic packaging materials are necessary to maintain the optimum product presentation that meets market needs. Ciba ® SHELFPLUS ® UV filters are solutions designed to protect package contents from UV light damage and ultimately increase the product’s shelf life. A dominant trend in packaging today is that consumers want to see what they are buying, and clear packaging is the order of the day. Clear packaging allows further differentiation of products. Brand companies are anxious to leverage the ‘shelf appeal’ of their products’ appearance to attract the busy, quality-conscious consumer. Consumer goods in transparent packaging are exposed to a greater degree of light transmission through the package since most of the transparent packaging materials offer little to no UV light filtering. What are clear advantages for consumers and consumer goods companies can result in a significant technical challenge, namely, the loss of product quality through exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. For many years Ciba ® Specialty Chemicals has been working to provide solutions to overcome this challenge, and as a result, can now offer a broad range of UV filters for plastic packaging, under the brand name Ciba ® SHELFPLUS ® UV, that can address these UV-filtering requirements. UV light.... your enemy Does your product in transparent packaging change colour and/or fragrance, spoil quickly, or otherwise not perform as you wish? The problem could be UV light. Sources of UV radiation include exposure to sunlight when the products are used or displayed outdoors or behind a window, as well as UV exposure from fluorescent lighting inside the store. The 280–400nm wavelength of light is commonly considered as UV. UV light can adversely affect the product quality. Another challenge involves degradation of value-added product components such as flavours, scents, and vitamins upon exposure to UV light. Plastics... material of choice Today plastics are increasingly the material of choice for packaging. Polyethylene terephtalate (PET), a popular option in packaging, offers little in the way of UV protection above the wavelength 330nm. PET is widely used for bottles but also in multi-layer films. Other materials widely used in rigid and flexible packaging, such as polyethylene or polypropylene, provide no UV protection. Thus, there is often a need to consider the use of a UV filter to meet packaging shelf life requirements. packaging 21 There is not one solution for all the different packages, each UV filter solution has to be designed depending both on the packaging and also on the UV sensitivity of the product. Now Ciba can offer a solution for most applications. Ciba SHELFPLUS UV filters can be incorporated in a wide range of packaging materials – bottles, jars, trays, tubes, cups, lids, films – and offer medium to broad UV filtering with excellent packaging transparency. Personal care products, household products, food and beverages, as well as medical and pharmaceutical products can all benefit from UV protection provided by SHELFPLUS UV filters. Ciba ® SHELFPLUS ® UV 1100 for PET bottles SHELFPLUS UV 1100 has been specially designed to protect bottle contents from UV damage. Incorporated in the PET bottle, SHELFPLUS UV 1100 has the ability to block 90% of UV light up to 390nm and offers excellent processing stability. An experiment was carried out on a blue UV sensitive liquid. In this case, colour was the main issue; in other cases, odour, taste or performance may be more critical. The blue liquid packaged in a PET bottle was exposed to light and its colour faded within a few days. The same blue liquid packaged in a PET bottle containing the UV filter, SHELFPLUS UV 1100, was exposed in parallel and under the same conditions. After several weeks of exposure, the liquid still showed its original blue colour. In that case, the use of SHELFPLUS UV 1100 enabled the use of clear PET bottles as packaging for this blue, UV-sensitive liquid.
