FROM THE PRINCIPALS
Prendergast Playground!!
We are very pleased to announce that
John G. Prendergast School has been selected by
the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent
Association for their Sandy Ground Project to honor
the victims of Sandy Hook . Bill Lavin, president
of the NJ Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association surprised me early Wednesday morning
not only to inform us that we would have the playground built, but they would actually begin
construction that day. The construction took 2 days and the rubber base will be installed in a
week . A ribbon cutting is scheduled for the middle of May.
The playground will honor the memory of Catherine Hubbard. Catherine was a beautiful
6 year old girl who cared deeply about animals and loved going to the park. Her mother
and brother, Freddy, were on hand for the ground breaking.
Freddy also served as honorary foreman for the day.
We cannot find the words to fully express our gratitude
to all of those who helped make this event possible.
Our sincere appreciation to the New Jersey Fire Fighters Mutual
Benevolent Association, Port Authority Police Benevolent
Association, the Mayor’s Office, Ansonia Fire Department,
Ansonia Police Department, City of Ansonia Public
Works Department, Bobby Evans and the BOE Maintenance
Department., Catherine Hubbard’s Family, the staff, students, and the parents.
In the spirit of the Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play, we encourage all of our
families to “pay it forward” and donate to the remaining playgrounds. Information on how to
donate can be found at www.thesandygroundproject.org.
"The road for us is hard because we don't
have our 6-year-old, but to know there is a
playground being built and kids are going
to be running, playing and laughing, it's
the world. It's how we wanted Catherine to
be remembered."
PRENDERGAST SCHOOL PRINCIPAL OF THE DAY
With summer fast approaching, below are
some ideas for ways to help your son or
daughter continue to learn over the summer.
Jaidyn Matos, from Miss
Matott’s class works with
Mr. McNeill to do the
morning announcements.
Sterling Griffin, from Mrs. Dlugas’s
class checks email when he was
Principal of the Day.
Joshua Vega, from Mrs. Blanchard’s class
sits in the Principal’s seat during his day
as Principal.
Makalyla Quinn from Miss Halpin’s class does the morning
announcements when she was Principal of the Day with her assistant,
Eshona Vickers.
Emily Gonzalez, from Mrs. Telo’s class works
hard at the computer during her day as Principal.
Alexander Lopez from Miss Matott’s first
grade class stands with his assistant
Karon Borges during his day as Principal
Maqila Mosley-Williams, from Miss Teodosio’s class
works on a report when she was Principal of the Day.
Emily Borona, from Mrs. Dlugas’s class became the first
student to be Principal of the Dayf or the second time.
Above she poses with her assistant Alyssa Swanson.
New Uniform Policy for
Next Year
The BOE voted last month to change the dress
code policy to a more strict uniform policy.
The uniform will consist of a polo shirt in
navy, white, or carolina blue with the Ansonia
Charger logo embroidered on the left
chest.

Pants will be “Dockers” style in either navy
or khaki.
Shorts, skorts and capris will also be allowed
in navy or khaki.
The shirts will be available from On Time
Printing located on Rt. 34 and online. The children’s
embroidered polo shirts will cost only
$7.00.
More information will follow, but we wanted
to alert parents so that they did not purchase
clothes for next year yet.
Ansonia High School Students came to Prendergast for
Financial Literacy Day. The students explain the
importance of knowing about finances.

Take a visit to the library - The Ansonia
Library has a variety of activities
planned for the summer, arts and
crafts, story hour, and a magic show
are just some of the events that are being
planned. Contact the library at 203-
734-6275 for more info.
Play games - Board and dice games are
an excellent way to practice math skills
over the summer months. Games like
Monopoly, Yahtzee, and Dominoes are
a great way to practice math during a
summer rain storm.
Have students keep a journal - By having
students write about what they did
every few days reinforces good writing
habits. If your son or daughter doesn’t
like writing, have them draw pictures
and write a word to describe it.
Take a family field trip to the Ansonia
Nature Center- The Nature Center offers
many free or low cost activities
such as Guided Hikes, Creature Features,
Fishing activities and much
more. Contact the Nature Center at 203
-736-1053 for more info.
Let your child be the chef - Pick up a
cook book and have your son or
daughter choose the recipe for the
evening. Have them go through the advertisements
to find items on sale and
take a trip to the grocery store. Have
students use the recipe to determine
quantities. This reinforces literacy and
math skills.
Lastly, have your child read daily. Daily
reading is an integral key to prevent a
backslide over the summer.
