Sub-Branch President’s Report
What a change we have had this Christmas
New Year period weather wise, one of the
mildest and wettest summers we have had on
record, this shows what contrasting weather
patterns we have in this great country. As we
now move onto autumn we have April, with
that comes ANZAC Day and 2012 will be the
97th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli.
Our ANZAC Day March will assemble in Shaw
Street near the Service Station at 6.45am.
We will march off at 7.00am led by the
Sutherland Shire Band to the Memorial Park
at the club, where the ANZAC Day Service
will be conducted. The cadets from the 233 St
George Regional Cadet Unit will provide the
march escort and the Catafalque Party.
During April we have a number of special events
in recognition of ANZAC Day; on Tuesday 3rd
April we have our school ANZAC Day Service,
this service is held at the club and is well worth
attending as the whole service is conducted
by representatives from a number of the local
schools. Saturday the 14th April is the clubs
very popular ANZAC Dinner, details are
provided in this issue of the Burst, I suggest you
book early as it is a very good night. Tuesday
the 24th April the Sub Branch Committee will
be busy conducting ANZAC Day services at a
number of our local nursing homes.
By the time you receive this edition of the
Burst we will have held the Sub-Branch
Annual General Meeting on the 27th
February, the results of the elections will be
posted on the Notice Board in the foyer.
Sunday 6th November we held our
Remembrance Day Service and we were
very pleased to have the Navy Cadets from
TS Sirius and the Army Cadets from the 233
St George Regional Cadet Unit making up
the Catafalque Party and Guard, the Address
was given by Lt Col. Schon Condon RFD ED
CO Royal Australian Artillery. Mrs. Shirley
Corney was our vocalist and she once again
led us in singing the hymns. A delightful lunch
with refreshments followed the service.
Sunday 6th May we will be holding our
Battle of the Coral Sea Commemoration
Service, as this is the 70th Anniversary of
that significant battle and as such it will be
a special service. We will have the Officers
and Cadets from TS Sirius providing the
Catafalque Party and the Guard and
depending on their availability the Royal
Australian Navy Band will be coming, the
Service will commence at 10.45am. This is a
day that we recognize the significant role the
Royal Australian Navy played in the defence
of Australia in World War 2.
The TS Sirius staff and cadets will be
holding a full Naval Ceremonial Service and
Commemoration on Sunday 4th March
to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of
the sinking of the HMAS Yarra and HMAS
Perth, the service will commence at 1045am
followed by a luncheon, full details will be
displayed on the club notice board.
I would like to give early notice of our VP
Day Service and luncheon on Sunday 12th
August, this will be a very special occasion as
we will also be marking the 60th Anniversary
of the formation of the Kingsgrove RSL
Sub Branch. Neil Arena is heading up the
Committee that is tasked with making this a
very memorable day.
Being the first edition of the Burst for 2012
I will take the opportunity to thank our
hard working Secretary John Graham who
has does a tremendous job ensuring the
Sub Branch runs efficiently, thanks John.
Peter Lyle our very professional Treasurer
deserves special thanks for all the work he
does in managing
and reporting on
the Sub-Branch
finances. Peter is
also handling the
role of Welfare
Officer and he is
doing a great job
in looking after members interests with the
Department of Veteran Affairs
Vice President Neil Arena does a great job
and is always willing to deputise for me
when I am not available at meetings and
functions. As our Hospital Visitation Officers
we are indeed very fortunate to have the
services of Peter Pezzutti who has made
the lives of many our members that much
brighter although not well himself Peter has
continued to do a great job, thanks Peter.
To all the other Committee Members who
give so freely of their own time to attend
members funerals, officiating or assisting
with the RSL Service, visiting local schools,
nursing homes and the many other functions
and meetings that occur during the year,
thanks for all your help.
The Women’s Auxiliary had a very successful
year in 2011 raising much needed funds for
the various charities that we support, the
ladies do a great job organizing and serving
the ANZAC Day breakfast and the selling of
raffle tickets, this is an essential part of what
the RSL is all about.
“Hard work: an accumulation of
easy things you didn’t do when you
should have.”
Alan R. Barnes JP
President
Sports Administrator’s Report
Here we are into 2012 already with January
and February already passed. The Champions
of the Sporting Clubs were presented with
their trophies at the Presidents and Directors
night just before Christmas last year. This night
was a roaring success.
So far the Fishing Club has committed their
Annual General Meeting, with Graham
Evans now elected as their President. More
Fishing personnel (preferably with boats if
they have them of course) are welcome to
join the Fishing Club.
The first day of the Golf Club for 2012 was
held at Bardwell Valley, and kinda turned into
a swimming carnival unfortunately. After the
game all returned back to Kingsgrove RSL for
a well earned hamburger a few quenching
drinks and for the Annual General Meeting.
Graham (Sarge) Sheary was re-elected for
another year as President. They had three
new members joining them that day.
The Snooker Club’s Annual General Meeting
was scheduled for the 3rd February, with
the Dart’s Club scheduled for the 10th
February. The Indoor Bowl’s Club AGM is
also scheduled for the 16th February. More
news to come.
The Sporting Clubs bring a lot of
camaraderie to their individual sports and
invite all members of Kingsgrove RSL Club
to their outings. The Snooker Club meets
on a Friday evening in the Members Bar for
a night of snooker. The Darties meet on a
Friday night in the Members bar for a night
of spear throwing and much frivolity. The
Indoor Bowls meet on a Thursday night in
the main auditorium with also much laughter.
The Fishos, well they travel to Shoalhaven
Heads for a weekend of teaching a worm to
swim, and also in Botany bay, or wherever
they find water. The Golfers play at least once
a month on the best manicured Golf courses
(Hic, Hic) in Sydney, namely “ROYAL” Bardwell
Valley, Kogarah, and all over the place.
If you have that urge to participate in any of
the Club’s sporting outings give your name
to the Receptionist who in turn will pass
onto the respective sporting body for follow
up and invitation to join.
Have fun while you play everyone
