The 15 th of March at Hatfield Heath School saw the 

children (and staff) dressed up in red for a sponsored 

dress up to earn money for those that needed it. The 

school dressed up in red and did a school talent show. 

Even though the children and staff had a great time no 

one forgot the cause that they were raising money for.

Wells and Pumps 

The first amendments are now available for 

purchasers of Hatfield Regis Local History Society's 

publication “The Wells and Pumps of Hatfield 

Heath”. It is suggested the following be added to the 

addendum page : 

APRIL 2013 

Lilac Cottage, Stortford Road. Enlargement of the 

cottage. Well filled in and an extension built over. 

Pump gone. 

The Stag. Development planned. The well remains 

covered over in what was a bar of this public house. 

A cast iron yard pump which stood against an outside 

wall has gone. 

There are possibly four more sites still to be 

researched and an article from an owner who is 

restoring his pump for irrigation use still to come. 

“Thank you” to all who have purchased a copy. 

Copies of this publication, the late Robin Gurnett's 

“Hatfield Heath and its Residents in 1861” and 

“Prisoner of War Camp 116” by Ivan Cooper are still

Hatfield Regis 

Local History Society 

President: Rupert Gosling Esq. Lord of the Manor 

The April meeting of the History Society began with a 

launch of the Hatfield Heath POW Camp 116 Book preceded 

by a slide presentation. A well attended meeting followed 

the local history of the Camp and a general 

introduction to POW Camps in the British Isles. 

The location in Mill Lane provided the starting point for 

a series of images that was representative of both the 

Prisoners and Guards sections. Aerial photographs dated 

1946 and recent images show that the Camp has not 

changed considerably. The Prisoner section is now occupied 

by Greenways with many of the original Laing wood 

buildings still in use after almost 60 years. The Guards 

section brick built MOWP style has not been occupied and 

is now overgrown and subjected to vandalism. There is 

however examples of Prisoner artistic abilities in the Camp 

and others presented to some Villagers. A mural painted 

above the door in the canteen, carvings owned by Joy 

Passfield and a series of water colours are some examples 

of the Prisoners skills. Shower, toilet, kitchen and Guards 

living quarters, although dilapidated are still recognisable 

as buildings which would have been occupied during the 

war. 

The presentation ended with a question and answer 

session that involved contributions from some of the audience 

who had personal recollections and memories of the 

Prisoners.

A Talk on Ethiopia 

Diane and Richard’s illustrated talk on Ethiopia was 

stimulating and informative. It was very interesting to 

discover something about the rich history, culture and 

traditions of a people that I only became of in terms of 

famine or the war with Eritrea. 

The majority of 

the talk centred 

on the Rock 

Churches of 

Lalibela. It was 

fascinating to 

learn that these 

churches were 

carved into rock 

horizontally or 

vertically. The 

vertical ones 

starting at the 

top, cutting out 

the shape, 

creating a space 

around and then 

working down to 

the required 

level. 

Some of the churches were beautifully decorated. As 

can be seen from the picture below, there is a strong 

influence of Judaism in the Christianity practised in this 

region. The final picture shows a priest holding the 

special cross of 

Lalibela. He is 

also holding a 

stick with a bar 

across the top.

the bar forms a chin rest which affords some measure 

of relief for tired legs. 

We were also shown some of the primitive conditions of 

Northern Ethiopia. Women collecting water from rivers 

or springs in 

large containers 

and then 

carrying them 

home on their 

heads. Some of 

the men in the 

tour group had 

difficulty lifting 

them. 

Before the talk 

we were treated 

to some 

delicious 

sandwiches and scrumptious cakes. We were also 

able to chat to old friends and make some new ones. 

The talk was given to raise money for Holy Trinity 

Friends. This is an organisation which provides funds 

to go towards the upkeep of the village church. We love 

our church and think that the village and the community 

would be poorer in every way without it. If you would 

like to support the church by joining the Friends (£10 a 

year, or £100 for a lifetime membership) please contact

from the nearest Ambulance Station, this means that 

we are well outside the recommended 8 minute 

response time. 

You may also be aware that the first few minutes 

can make a difference between life and death in the 

case of Cardiac Arrest, with the time to first 

treatment being critical. 

In view of this I am trying to get a group of 6-8 

people who would be willing to become First 

Responders for the village. 

This role is a voluntary one, and it does mean 

undergoing advanced life saving training by the East 

of England Ambulance Service. If you are interested 

and would like further information please email me

Tuesday evening at Brownies or Guides in St.

BOOTCAMP DID THE LACTIC RUSH 2013 

It was 8.5 miles of running cross country with 

30 obstacles including wading through neck 

high muddy water and mud puddles

BIRD SCARERS 

I was playing in the lane when the local farmer 

approached me. He dug in his pocket and produced 

a sixpence telling me to make as much noise as I 

could whenever the pigeons came down into the 

field behind our bungalow. The wheat had just been 

harvested and the sheaves stood in stooks, the ears 

gathered together in a concentration of grain that 

must be irresistible for a flock of pigeons. I took 

great delight in banging an old dustbin lid and was 

very effective, at least for the time that I was on 

duty. The sixpence together with a ration coupon 

enabled me to buy a bar of chocolate from the local 

transport café. 

I realise now that the war had highlighted the 

vulnerability of our food supply and, in the years 

immediately following, the wartime attitude towards 

home production continued, which included 

ploughing unused meadows to increase production. 

Loss of food to pigeons and other wildlife was 

unacceptable and in the late 1950’s or early 60’s 

there were inter county shoots to help reduce the 

pigeon numbers.

“TREBLE" WIN 

THE DIVISION ONE LEAGUE TITLE, 

THE DIVISION ONE CUP 

BILL BRUTY CUP. 

Hatfield Heath Football Club has just completed 

one of the most successful and memorable 

seasons in our history. 

Under manager Spencer Bull the club won the 

coveted "treble" winning the Division One 

league title, the Division One cup and then 

topped it off with the prestigious Bill Bruty Cup. 

Older villagers will remember Bill who lived in 

Ardley Crescent and was a legend of the Essex 

football scene until his death in the early 1980s. 

So it was particularly poignant to win the trophy 

for only the second time ever with a 4-2 win 

over Parsloe Athletic at Bishop's Stortford's 

Woodside Park stadium on May 11th. 

It's an exciting time for the club with the launch 

of our fund-raising appeal to secure a pitch in 

the village. We have already banked over 

£3,000 in our attempts to raise enough money 

to buy land for a pitch for the first time in the 

club's 120 year history. 

A quiz in the village halll raised £765 and a

Red Nose Day 2013 

The 15 th of March at Hatfield Heath School saw the 

children (and staff) dressed up in red for a sponsored 

dress up to earn money for those that needed it. The 

school dressed up in red and did a school talent show. 

Even though the children and staff had a great time 

no one forgot the cause that they were raising money 

for. 

The school showed great talent, entertainment and 

enthusiasm for Comic Relief! The winner of the 

juniors was Jed Eastland singing ‘Food Glorious 

Food’ from Oliver Twist and the joint winners for the 

infants were a group of dancers and a group of 

singers singing ‘Skyfall’. 

The school raised approximately £1000; an amazing 

amount of money for Comic Relief.

AIRPORTS COMMISSION 

The UK economy is not being held back through a lack 

of airport capacity, says Stop Stansted Expansion (SSE). 

In a statement based on its submission to the Airports 

Commission, widely reported in national and regional 

media, the campaign group says there simply isn't any 

unsatisfied demand for more business flights or for more 

routes to emerging markets. Claims that the UK 

economy is suffering through lack of airport capacity are 

aviation industry spin, it says. To back up its statement, 

SSE says Heathrow flew more people to Miami last year 

than to the whole of mainland China, and more people to 

Nice than to either Beijing or Shanghai. Gatwick flew 

almost 50 times as many people to Spain last year as to 

the four BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and 

China - combined. Stansted provides flights every day of 

the week to Alicante but none at all to any of Europe's 

main business centres such as Paris, Zurich and 

Frankfurt. Meanwhile, London continues to be 

independently ranked as the best city in Europe for 

doing business and as the city with the best transport 

links with other cities and internationally. In its 

submission to the Commission, Brian Ross, SSE's 

economics adviser, says overall demand for business 

flights is actually declining and is now 20% less than it 

was ten years ago. SSE's submission to the Airports

LONDON 'WON'T GET BOOST FROM 

AIRPORT EXPANSION' 

London Evening Standard - 22 April 2013 

AN INDEPENDENT report into airports expansion 

today accused groups in favour of boosting capacity 

of "distorting" the economic arguments. 

The study by Dutch consultants CE Delft claims the proexpansion 

lobby is guilty of "miscalculating" and 

"exaggerating" the case for change. It also criticised the 

Department for Transport for failing to take into account 

social and environmental costs compared with the 

economic benefits. And it said London's economy would 

not necessarily get a boost from expanding or building 

new airports as it already had good air connections. 

Sir Howard Davies's airports commission is examining 

whether the South-East needs additional capacity to

The music festival is to be opened by

JOANovARC 

JOANovARC have performed worldwide – in the USA, 

Mediterranean, the Caribbean and have extensively toured 

Europe. Including the London Astoria; Café de Paris; the 

Garage; Barfly and the O2 Indigo. The girls have played at 

festivals including Rhythms of the World, Namfest, 

Fordham Festival, Brighton Pride, Go Go Festival, 

Cambridge Rock, BMF Biker Festival Peterbough arena 

and many more. They have also supported Girl School, Top 

loader, Marillion and Bad Company’s Dave Colwell. 

In 2011 the band promoted their first Rock Band release 

with their track ‘Sisters’ followed by a successful launch at

Throughout 2011 the girls shot their debut music video 

‘Peace of Mind’ with Rachel Price of BBC Bristol with 

thousands of hits on YouTube! They also released their 

debut EP ‘Beneath the Sky’ on iTunes which was 

promoted on radio and TV stations across the world – and 

gained a publishing deal with Speegra Music in the UK 

and Veal Steen in the USA! 

In 2012 the girls played their American Tour showcasing

When the Parish Magazine celebrated its 50th Year 

anniversary in 1943, the Vicar, and Magazine 

Editor, the Rev A F Gardiner contacted earlier 

incumbents going back to the first edition in 1893 to 

ask them to write about their reminiscences during 

their time at Hatfield Heath. All replied!.and gave a 

fascinating account of life in the Village during their 

period of occupation. In particular the accounts 

given by the Vicars during the two World Wars gave 

an insight as to life here which could not be obtained 

by any history book. Here is the third report which 

covers the period 1905 - 1915 during the Rev De 

Vere Watson's time.

A new Organ installed to commemorate the Golden 

Jubilee 1914 Parish transferred to the Diocese of 

Chelmsford 

The next Editor the Rev. H. DE V. WATSON who 

came here in 1905, and is now Rector of 

Belbroughtqn in.Worcestershire, has sent some 

very interesting reminiscences of his ten years' 

work here, 

" I first took services in the church at Hatfield Heath 

on Ash Wednesday, March 8th, 1905, though I was 

not actually licensed and admitted as Perpetual Curate 

and Titular Vicar until March 28th by the Bishop of 

St. Albans. 

My most vivid recollection of coming to the Vicarage 

is that a new kitchen range which had been included 

in the repairs to be done had not arrived and that Mr 

and Mrs, Horace Broke, who had invited us to stay at 

Gladwyns for a day or two, most kindly 

kept us there for a fortnight. This was the beginning 

of a friendship which, I am glad to say, lasts to the 

present time with a family whose interest in the parish 

has been unfailing. 

The most outstanding event connected with the 

church during my time as Vicar was the celebration of 

the Jubilee of its consecration on August 4th, 1909, 

During the preceding 3 years £300 had been raised for 

a new organ, which is still I trust doing good service. 

On August 4th the Bishop of St

Albans, Dr. Jacob, came to dedicate it, and two 

former Vicars, Mr. Beaven and Mr. Reynolds, were 

present to take part in our thanksgiving services. 

The church was, I remember, packed to the doors. 

On the following day there was a most enjoyable Fete 

at the Vicarage. Memory recalls the Widdington 

Brass Band and the Rev. F. W. Galpin 

of, Broad Oak, a most accomplished musician, 

amusing himself by playing various instruments in 

turn in order to give .the players a rest. Also the 

800 fairy lamps which lighted up the garden in the 

evening. 

I look on to another August 4th, that of; 1914 when 

war was declared on Germany. I had arranged to start 

my holiday on that day and a locum was coming into 

the Vicarage. Not knowing exactly what was going 

to happen we had agreed to carry on with our plans, 

so my wife and I and our two little girls started off for 

the Isle of Wight where we spent the first few weeks 

of the War. On our return many lads came from time 

to time to the Vicarage to discuss the question of 

enlistment and there was a very good response of 

volunteers from the village. Special Constables were 

enrolled. I was made a Corporal and had many night 

walks round the village, often with Mr. Ernest 

Hockley. The Government kept in view the 

possibility of an attempt at invasion and instructions 

were issued as to the roads by which the villagers 

were to be evacuated in the event of a landing on the 

East coast. Able bodied men were to remain behind to 

help to dig trenches, etc., and part of my duties was 

specified to be that of' burying the dead.' 

In my time means of transport were limited, and there 

was no wireless, so that we were a self-contained 

community depending on ourselves for amusement, 

and I remember many enjoyable concerts and other 

social gatherings in Trinity Halt. Cricket was popular 

and calls to mind the figures of I. Brown, G. Harris, 

P. Newman, R.Warden and 

others. A popular event, which included a cricket 

match, was an annual visit of a party from the Trinity 

College Oxford Mission at Stratford, where I began 

work. This contact between the village and Londonover-the- 

Border was beneficial to all. The Mission 

has alas ! been bombed out of existence. There was a 

very clear cut division between Church and Chapel, 

though we were good friends, for each body had its 

own Day School with Head Master and Assistants, a 

most unusual position in a village of only about 600 

inhabitants. There were very few children who did 

not belong to one of the Sunday Schools and though 

maybe one looks back through rose-tinted glasses, it 

seems to me that there was a 

greater readiness to attend Sunday Services and weekday 

meetings of various kinds than I find now-a-days 

This may have been partly due to the fact that we 

were, as I have said, a self contained community. In

addition to the organ, and oak casing which was 

added later, the church was beautified by the E. 

window given by Mrs. Horace Broke and family, and 

the wrought iron lectern subscribed for by 

parishioners and friends, both in memory of Mr. 

Horace Broke, These were dedicated on Palm 

Sunday, 1911, by the Rev. J. B. Andrews, RD. and 

later Mrs. Broke gave the small window adjoining the 

pew where they had always sat. Mr. E. Perry was my 

Warden for 10 years, a faithful friend and loyal 

servant of the Church. Mr. Bretton was People's 

Warden for my first few years and was succeeded by 

Col. H.Broke who continued in office up to the time 

that I left. Mr. D. Day was Clerk and Sexton for the 

whole period and on Trinity Sunday, 1909, was 

presented with a silver watch in appreciation of 25 

years' service. In 1914 Essex was separated from the 

St. Albans diocese, the new diocese of Chelmsford 

formed, and the Rev. J. E. Watts-Ditchfield, Vicar of 

St. James-the-Less, Bethnal Green,was consecrated as 

its first Bishop on St. Matthias' Day. One of my last 

recollections as Vicar of Hatfield Heath is of a visit 

from him and a talk in the study about the parish 

when he gave me his Blessing for the new work to 

which I was going."

Wear it with pride 

Narrow or wide 

Adorn with a ribbon or with a bell 

No hat to wear, we've one to sell. 

Girls and boys come onto the Heath 

Stroll around in garland or wreath- 

Worn in your hair 

Make them all stare 

Wear with a flower or with a bow 

There's plenty to buy, don't you know. 

Girls n boys we need more hats to sell 

Raid boxes and attics, so we can do well. 

Ribbons n bows also bring 

Alternatively give us a ring 

But please wear a hat on Hatfest Day 

Make everyone happy, bright and gay!

Our first Hatfest Day in 2012 was successful and 

fun. Please enter into the spirit of the day with 

all family and friends wearing amazing ( or boring ) 

hats. 

MORE HATS NEEDED 

We still need more to sell; also anything we could 

use as trimmings. Please have a good look and give 

us a ring.
