The following is the script for the service 

Steve Foster 

Good afternoon, I'm Steve Foster and this is James 

Miller. It is our privilege and pleasure to welcome you 

here to celebrate the life of our good friend Peter Lines. 

James Miller 

Whilst he was in hospital Peter, in a practical manner 

that will surprise none of those who knew him, began 

the process of planning this service. Using the notes 

taken by Margaret, Andy and Rich we have created this 

event. 

Steve Some of the items you will see this afternoon are 

direct requests from Peter. Others are based on the notes 

and ideas he laid down. Above all else he was very clear 

on one thing, this is to be a celebration. It is, in Peters 

own words "A Service to Celebrate the life of Peter 

Lines and all those involved in it" 

James. 

So whilst we mourn his passing, our obligation today is 

very clear. We are here to remember and celebrate the 

many wonderful times we shared with Peter. There will, 

undoubtedly, be some tears along the way but hopefully 

they will mostly be tears of laughter. So lets get started... 

Steve 

Peter Denis Lines was born in the Somerset county town 

of Taunton on 31 January 1940. His parents had recently 

moved from London for his father to start a new job in 

the Post Office as a telecommunications engineer. 

Almost immediately his father was posted to the South 

Coast for work of national importance during the second 

world war. Some of Peter's earliest memories included 

having a refugee from London coming to live with them, 

hiding under the dining room table as German planes 

flew overhead and being taken down to Taunton town 

centre to see the Neon shop signs being turned back on a 

week after war had ended. 

At the age of 11 he won a scholarship to study at 

Taunton School where he won chess competitions and 

was an active member of the Air Cadets 

James 

At the age of 18 - and unbeknown to his parents - he 

took the exam to become a Post Office Engineer. By an

extraordinary coincidence Margaret was in the same hall 

sitting a Civil Service Executive exam - but they never 

met or spoke. 

For the record, He passed, She failed. 

James 

Peter then spent a year in Guildford climbing poles and 

digging holes before being accepted on the University 

sponsored scheme for a sandwich course. He moved to 

London to attend what is now City University. 

Coincidentally Margaret had already moved to London 

to work in the Civil Service. They met while playing 

mixed hockey in Regents Park on a Sunday morning - 

his hostel was paired with hers. Steve 

He asked her to dance at a social as she was the only one 

he 

recognised from the team. They discovered that their 

homes in the West Country were only 20 miles apart 

and that his father knew and worked with Margaret's 

uncle, both having the same job in Telecommunications 

at the Post Office, one in Taunton, the other in 

Barnstaple. 

What a relief for Margaret's Mum - it made Peter 

respectable! 

Saturday nights were spent dancing to Mel Dancer and 

his Dance Band at Fulham Town Hall. Only waltzing 

and quickstepping as the salsa and tango lessons did not 

get them anywhere. Those of you who have seen Peter 

dance know that at least he was willing to try. Their 

favourite song to dance to was Marjie which, of course, 

he changed to Margie. 

James 

They married at Escot in Devon in 1962 and began their 

married life in a flat in Tooting Bec, South London. 

Much time was spent looking for a house they could 

afford and Sawbridgeworth, or to be exact Lower 

Sheering, was chosen after a social visit to Bishops 

Stortford on a lovely sunny day. 

James 

Andrew was born there in August 1964 and has never 

forgiven Peter for having to have Sheering on his birth 

certificate. Richard soon followed on 27 March 1966, 

the day after the move to Cox Ley here in Hatfield 

Heath took place, what an introduction to the village. 

Peter lived in that house for the rest of his life. 

Steve 

He converted an old Dormobile into a campervan and 

the family spent three weeks each summer down in 

Cornwall. Despite his loathing of football, in 1972 he 

took the boys to Stamford Bridge to watch Chelsea and 

sparked a passion in them that lives on in his grandsons 

today. They went to see Bishop's Stortford win the last 

ever FA Amateur Cup at Wembley. Peter and Margaret 

sent the boys to the local comprehensive school and, 

despite his profession, Peter showed no disappointment 

when both decided not to go to university but head 

straight into the careers they still work in now.

Peter was Chairman of the local residents association 

and heavily involved in helping to put the school 

swimming pool in -such a huge asset to the village at the 

time with it being open almost every day and weekends 

for out of school use. He was a leading influence in the 

argument for a new village hall and threw himself whole 

heartedly into raising money to build it alongside people 

like Cyril Claydon, Cyril Hackett and Don Foster. 

Hence the start of the original Festival which ran for 

over 30 years and raised so much money not only to pay 

for the hall but for other clubs as well. James 

His interest in the village hall was huge right up to his 

death. His paperwork is meticulous and he has made it 

relatively easy for others to continue. 

His interest in what was best for the village never 

wavered and his thoughts were often sought because he 

was able to see all sides of an argument and pick out the 

relevant bits. 

For many years, despite not being a church-goer himself 

he arranged for this church to be floodlit over the 

Christmas period to show it in its best light. He fitted all 

the electrics in the old scout hut and both scared and 

thrilled generations of children with his fantastic 

frightening "acts" every Halloween. 

I dare say many of you will have visited Peter in his 

garage over the years in search of an elusive item 

needed to complete a project. The garage is stocked with 

a huge array of tins and boxes all with contents clearly 

labelled.

As many of you will know, Peters career in education 

was extraordinary. Here to tell us more please welcome 

Professor Reza Sotudeh and Dr Kate Clarke.

One evening during Peters time in hospital, Margaret 

phoned me and said Peter had asked if I would be 

prepared to assist in putting together this event. The 

answer was, of course, never in question. It was at that 

point I first learned of the notes Peter was making. 

In the notes there is a reference to me singing and or 

speaking. This was followed by a note about a bench in 

Hatfield Forest. We debated long and hard whether he 

meant I should actually be singing on a bench in the 

forest whilst this event took place. There is also a 

reference to a song from the musical “Showboat”. About 

a year ago a production came into the Playhouse that 

explored the life and career of the African-American 

singer and Civil Rights activist Paul Robeson. Peter 

found this a very affecting piece, no doubt due in part to 

their shared sense of determination to achieve equality 

for all irrespective of Race, Religion or Disability 

In his theatre career Robeson is probably best known for 

the song "Old Man River" and it was this song that Peter 

mentioned. I hope Pete will forgive me for choosing to 

sing it for you here rather than on that bench in the 

forest!

Peter's other great loves were rugby and cricket. He had 

little time for football and was bemused by his sons and 

grandsons passion for it. One of his proudest moments 

was when both his grand-daughters Megan and Rachel 

played for the school rugby first 15 before Megan went 

on to play for Newcastle University First 15 last season 

and in the side that beat Loughborough 18-5. 

And one of his happiest memories was at Richard's 

house on that morning back in 2003 when Jonny 

Wilkinson kicked the winning dropped goal -just as 

Harry, when six months old, crawled in front of him - 

and England won the rugby world cup

While Peter's disdain for football was well-known one 

of his good friends and colleagues was former Arsenal 

goalkeeper Bob Wilson. 

Bob couldn't be here today but sent this message. 

"I'm just sorry I can't be with you but I am committed to 

a charity golf day raising funds for the Willow 

Foundation. My memories of Peter centre on his 

amazing humility, such a rare asset for someone who 

has achieved so much in life and in helping other less 

naturally gifted individuals to fulfill their potential. He 

was a great man"

With cricket he was a passionate Somerset fan and the 

boys today are wearing the county's shirts in his honour. 

He took Andy and Richard to watch Somerset beat 

Essex by one run in the Gillette Cup semi-final at 

Taunton in 1978 with his great heroes Ian Botham and 

Viv Richards in the side. Peters brother John and sister 

in law Linda vividly remember him sitting on the beach 

in Cornwall in the 1970's with his ear pressed to a tiny 

transistor radio listening to Test Match Special. He 

loved Test Match Special and always chuckled at this 

famous clip featuring one of his favourite commentators 

the legendary Brian Johnston with Jonathan Agnew

As I mentioned earlier one of Peters great cricketing 

heroes was Somerset and England legend Ian Botham

Peter's love of theatre started when he was around 14 

with the Pleideas Theatrical Group in Taunton where he 

spent all his spare time, cycling the couple of miles to 

the venue. It continued at the City University where he 

quickly got involved with co-directing plays, one being 

An Inspector Calls. While there he directed The Deep 

Blue Sea with all the actors having severe visual 

problems - a start to his concern that acting should not 

be confined to able bodied people.

A constant theme this afternoon is how Pete was always 

a source of encouragement and inspiration to those with 

whom he worked either as an educator, a man of the 

theatre or more often as a trusted and reliable good 

friend. 

For many of these people theatre was, at first, their 

hobby but they have gone on to make it their career. 

There are so many it is impossible to mention them all I

want to take a moment to give you an idea of the 

influence Peter had. 

Tom Pitt Chambers 

Former student and employee of the University of 

Hertfordshire. He can't be here today because, as is so 

often the case, he is working out of the country 

following acareer inspired by Peter encouraging the 

development of theatre facilities at the university. 

Steve 

Richard Chalmers Worked with and learnt from Peter 

on numerous productions at the Playhouse. Richard is 

currently living and working in Singapore as a lighting 

designer. 

James 

Anna Dodgshun 

a New Zealander who came to work at The Playhouse 

and has very fond memories of her first Panto, 

operating lighting designed by Peter. Anna now works 

for the Australian Ballet and Opera with an office that 

must boast one of the best views in the world looking 

over Sydney harbour from the Opera House.

Michael Fentiman, 

Who's directing career started at The Playhouse, is now 

a Freelance Director and just about to start work on 

Titus Andronicus, his third production for the Royal 

Shakespeare Company. 

James 

Jane Gillespie and John Mann, former Playhouse 

Technicians both of whom are now working in West 

End Theatre who along with Rory Davies, a current 

Playhouse Technician have installed and are operating 

the technical aspects of the service today. 

Steve 

Two long serving members of the crew at The 

Playhouse were Peter "Sparky" Wright and Richard 

Jordan. Both were hugely inspired by working with 

Pete but particularly Sparky

Steve 

Today Peter and Margaret should have been on a flight 

toAlaska where they were about to embark on their 

latest adventure - but sadly it wasn't to be, 

He and Margaret had a wonderful 12 years of retirement 

which included even more travelling to far off lands. 

Maccu Pichu in Peru, Angkor Wat in Cambodia and the 

foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal were just some of 

the places they were able to visit, There were many 

visits to Hong Kong and the Far East sometimes in 

connection with external consultancy work.

More recently Peter was never happier than when he 

was 

working down at the barn on Dartmoor that Richard and 

Nikki bought last year or helping solve the many 

problems of Andy and Lois's home in the French village 

of Le Crotoy. They regularly went into London for trips

to the theatre and services in connection with his 

membership of the Worshipful company of Engineers. 

Peter and Margaret were invited to two Buckingham 

Palace garden parties and carol concerts in the Tower of 

London. After being awarded the Freedom of the City of 

London Peter often threatened to use his rights to herd 

sheep across London Bridge. 

Steve 

Pete fell in love with cycling again and regularly went 

on 30 mile bike rides, all carefully logged on his 

computer. He recently enjoyed planning the route and 

taking part in a fund raising cycle ride for Hatfield 

Heath Football Club, on which, he was joined by his 

Grandson Harry. 

One of the happiest years of his life was 2012. Not only 

did He and Margaret celebrate their Golden Wedding 

but were also (PI lucky enough to get tickets for many 

events at the Olympics including events like 

Synchronised Swimming. 

Peter had three pet hates: Gossip, McDonalds and 

Football in that order! 

James 

Over the past couple of years I have discovered a 

different side of Peter. Working closely as fellow 

Trustees of the Harlow Playhouse Charitable Trust his 

many skills and talents including wisdom, patience, 

support and enthusiasm seemed boundless. To me 

personally he was a constant support and trusted 

confidante, his encouragement to trust in my own 

abilities and instincts and to keep fighting for what we, 

as a Trust, think is the best way forward is something 

that I currently find it impossible to believe can be replaced. 

But the work does and will go on and we will seek to honour 

his memory by continuing in the pursuit of our goals.

One of the last performances to benefit from a Peter 

Lines lighting design was by Harlow Ballet in April this 

year, a show in which James made his ballet debut! 

Representing Harlow Ballet and Harlow Playhouse 

Charitable Trust please welcome Henrietta Branwell.

Peter loved theatre in all forms but especially Musical 

Theatre. Included in Peters notes were comments about 

the four Musicals he would like represented here today. 

In a piece especially arranged for today by Chris 

Redman sit back and enjoy the music of Cabaret, West 

Side Story, Annie and The Wizard of Oz.

Today we have gained an insight into the extraordinary 

life and career of a man whose quiet modesty and 

humility means that, for many, much of what we have 

heard today will come as a surprise.

Lets take a moment for a brief reminder of just some of

At the start of this service we heard that Peter wanted 

this to be a not only a celebration of his life but a chance 

to say thank you to all those involved in making his life 

so fulfilling. Margaret and the family would like to take 

the opportunity to say a huge thank you to you all for 

your contribution to a wonderful life lived well. 

Due to the kindness of so many people Peter's memory 

will live on through other ways. An Endowment 

Scholarship at the Engineering Dept, 

University of Hertfordshire. The Lighting Box at 

Harlow Playhouse to be renamed after him. A cup in his 

memory to be sponsored by the Heath Players at the 

Hertford Drama Festival. A special show by his drama 

friends at Harlow Playhouse on 2nd February 2014 An 

award in his memory by Razed Roof. 

A seat in Hatfield Forest. 

There have been so many memories of help and 

kindnesses and advice that Peter had given in the past, 

many of which the family were totally unaware. He will 

always be there for us, we miss him so much Margaret, 

Andy and Lois, Rich and Nikki, Megan, Rachel and 

Cameron, Harry, Jacob, Joe and Jasper, John, Peter's 

only brother, his wife Linda and their three daughters 

and their partners.

1003 CHAIRMANS REPORT 

ML will attend a cabinet meeting tomorrow night. 

ML and the Clerk attended the Heath on Sunday evening 

1 st Sept as the funfair were packing up and leaving the 

site. It was noticed that a stake had gone through a gas 

main 2 feet under the surface and when it was pulled out 

there was a large escape of gas. Clerk had contacted the 

gas board and they attended promptly and effected a temporary 

repair and returned the following morning to carry 

out a full repair.

1007. HIGHWAYS 

Kerbstones in Broomfields and Cox Ley. Clerk to write 

again to ECC Highways and also to UDC suggesting 

consideration of more parking provision as the numbers 

of vehicles parking in Broomfields makes it very difficult 

for the refuse lorries to negotiate the tight turn from Cox 

Ley into Broomfields.

is on list of potential schemes 

2. A1060/Dunmow Road junction: Highways officers to 

meet with HHPC to discuss results of traffic survey. 

Engineers instructed to proceed with the design and 

investigatory works associated with a mini 

roundabout. 

3. A1060/Sawbridgeworth Road junction is on list of 

potential schemes and members have agreed 

funding for the investigative work. 

4. Zebra crossing on A1060 by school has been 

rejected by Highways as not meeting their criteria 

5. Request for 30 and 40 mph speed limits on sheering 

road have been referred to the network 

management team to be validated.

1008 VILLAGE GREEN 

Clerk has spoken to Roland Bull – Bidwells as Henry Turtill 

is on leave. Roland will try to respond before Friday with 

the progress of the proposed use of labour from Lord of 

the Manor to carry out works to Village Green. Clerk 

pointed out that if re-seeding was to be carried out, it 

needs to be done now. 

1009. COMPLETION OF TASKS 

This was not a criticism of the Clerk who has a difficult 

job trying to get small projects completed by various 

contractors who may have more major jobs in hand, but 

we need to re-assess who is going to carry out works on 

behalf of the council and to try to get completion dates 

agreed. 

1010. LITTER 

MS raised this issue . Regular instances of domestic 

rubbish in full black bin sacks being left alongside litter 

bins next to Bus stop at The Thatchers and next to 

Tudor Lodge. The sacks are ripped open by animals and 

contents dragged into undergrowth. MS has spoken to 

some who have been seen leaving the sacks, but more 

people seem to be doing it. Agreed to put something in 

the Parish Magazine. 

Clerk reported on the pensions and PAYE information he 

had been given and has circulated a report regarding 

remuneration. Agreed to formalise the employment of 

litter pickers and to grant an increase to £30 per round 

per month as there has been no rise for four years. 

1011. THE SHAW 

Clerk has tried to contact the property management 

company but has been given a telephone number which 

is incorrect. Further investigations to ascertain the contact 

details of the management company.

WHEELIE BIN DANGER 

On Friday 16th August at 11pm my 

parents were walking home from what 

wa a nice evening out with friends . 

They walked into Broomfields and not 

long after this their pleasant evening 

out was very quickly over. My Father 

tripped and fell over a wheelie bin which was straight across 

the path on its side. 

By 11.30pm my Father was in hospital being treated for a 

very nasty leg injury. 

I do not want to point the blame at a certain resident, but I 

do know that from the names on the bin, that they belong to 

residents of either Friendly Terrace or Browns Cottages. 

As far as we have been made aware, all bins should be left 

out on the morning of collection and taken in once emptied. 

Some of these bins were still out where this incident took 

place. On the following Monday morning. 

All I ask is that people take note before something like this 

happens again.

being handed on to family members

WINDOWS ON THE PAST 

When the Parish Magazine celebrated its 50th Year 

anniversary in 1943, the Vicar, and Magazine 

Editor, the Rev A F Gardiner contacted earlier 

incumbents going back to the first edition in 1893 to 

ask them to write about their reminiscences during 

their time at Hatfield Heath. All replied!.and gave a 

fascinating account of life in the Village during their 

period of occupation. In particular the accounts 

given by the Vicars during the two World Wars 

gave an insight as to life here which could not be 

obtained by any history book.

covers the period 1936 - 1945

In December 1940 a German Bomb destroyed the 

Schoolhouse known as Churchgate 

House and the west wall of the Institute plus windows on the 

north side of the Church. 

Rev A F Gardiner 1936—1943 War broke out 3 years 

after our arrival, and our village became at once the temporary 

home of families evacuated from London. In the Vicarage 

for instance we had at once 7 mothers and 7 children, and, in 

the next 2 years, 6 more mothers, 6 more children, 2 

grandfathers, a father, and an aunt—all of Jewish race 

and faith, from Clapton. Since then the Vicarage has been a 

F. A. Point. Our garage is the village Salvage Depot. Trinity 

Hall became a school for children from B. London. 

Meanwhile though a "safe area" we had plenty of bombs. 

" Churchgate, " at the N. entrance of the church, was 

demolished by a direct hit, providentially without loss of 

life. A Disposal Squad removed another bomb at the S. 

entrance with the church out of bounds for a week but, thank 

God, unscathed. Our church has been " blacked out" from the 

outset of war so that all our services have been held without

interruption, a privilege that has been highly prized. 

The village has played its full part in the war effort. More 

than 100 men and women have joined up. They are all 

remembered weekly by name in our public prayers and a gift 

is sent to each at Christmas. Contributions to the Savings 

Campaign and every other good cause have been 

spontaneous, systematic, and marvellous. The Home Guard 

and all the A.B.P. services have been enthusiastically 

manned. A Y.M.C.A. centre is being splendidly run by many 

willing helpers for members of the Forces and it is just what 

they needed. 

It was a new experience to have a Deaconess at the Vicarage. 

The people have found out, to their great comfort, what that 

means. At first it was puzzling, and more than one caller 

forme have asked " Is the Deacon in? " The beautiful little 

church has always been so much loved and so well cared for 

that its needs are few, but it has been enriched by gifts of a 

Processional Cross, a new Altar Book and a Litany, and a 

beautiful picture of the 

Madonna, a Passiontide frontal, much Altar linen, and many 

other gifts. The approaches to the Altar, the Chancel and the 

N. entrance have been improved, and a standard pipe in the 

churchyard has replaced the old pump destroyed by enemy 

action. 

Our people live on very happy terms with those of the Chapel 

congregation. On Good Fridays and National Days of Prayer 

we have United Services, and also a monthly service of 

United War Time Intercession. And at all times, in all good 

works, there is whole-hearted co-operation between all members 

of the Church and Chapel in spite of the vital differences 

which unhappily separate us from one .another in matters of 

Faith. 

We have been very happy here, and only lack of space 

forbids the mention of the host of keen and active workers 

who are doing so much here for the Church—the 

Churchwardens, Squadron Leader J. T. Wordsworth and Mr. 

P. V. Broke, the best ever; Miss C. Coleman, the one and only 

Secretary the P.C.C.has ever had; Mr. P. Newman, a worthy 

successor as Parish Clerk to Mr. Daniel Day ; Mr. and Mrs. 

Dix, now, alas! resigning, who have worked wonders with 

the Choir; Mr. E. A. B. Chandler whose Children's Services 

have made him their true guide and friend ; and so many 

others, unnamed but never to be forgotten. 

One last word. Throughout these 50 years every Vicar has 

found unfailing friendship at Gladwyns, and how much the 

Church owes to succeeding generations of Brokes it would 

be impossible to say. Words cannot express what my sister 

and I owe to Mrs. H. Broke and Mr. P. V. Broke, in our home 

and in the parish. If I may be forgiven a parody of that 

beautiful poem " The Brook" it is indeed a blessing to this 

parish that while Vicars may come and Vicars may go, the 

Brokes go on for ever. 

So we close our Jubilee Number, recalling the words of 

Scripture: "Ye shall hallow the fiftieth year: it shall be a 

jubilee unto you."home of families evacuated from London.

Garden Watch 

During August the garden has been inundated 

by white butterflies every day and all day - 

large, small and green veined alike. 

Once the Buddleia produced its inflorescences, 

the Peacocks, Tortoiseshells and Red Admirals 

arrived. Browns, Gatekeepers, Commas and 

small Coppers were abundant on the Marjoram. 

On 14th August a Brown 

Argus was seen for the first 

time and on the 15th 

August a “late” Brimstone 

appeared. 

August 2013 was a 

wonderful month for Butterflies 

and the National Survey 

results will be of interest to us

The Prisoner of War book still continues to 

create local interest. Now the reprint has an 

ISBN number one copy has been sent to the 

Legal Deposit at the British Library and 13 

copies in Hertfordshire Libraries. The latest 

information that relates to the Prisoner of War 

experience, has been provided by Jean 

Kettridge with the carving pictured below

may involve a much grander scheme about the issues 

that are really important to them. We thought that the
