ARTHUR THOMAS WRIGHT 

Tom Wright a former Parish 

Councillor died on 13th March 

aged 93. 

Tom was a very active member 

of our community serving on 

the Parish Council as well as 

the Welcome Club in which 

his wife Doris was treasurer 

for many years; and in the 

administration of Meals on 

Wheels. 

A keen gardener, he was well known for growing 

prize orchids. From his work he also developed an 

interest in poultry; breeding prize peacocks and 

peahens. 

Tom was born in Saffron Walden in 1914. He 

started his working life as an apprentice hairdresser, 

first in Saffron Walden, then at Beards in Old 

Harlow before moving to Bishop's Stortford. 

Tom, then had a change in his career, working as a 

poultryman at Ryes Farm. He returned to 

hairdressing in 1960 opening Beauclairs in Bishop's 

Stortford where he cut the hair of many 

distinquished local clients. Tom finished at 

Beauclairs in 1981. 

In 1997 he and Doris moved from Ryes Lane to 

Broomfields. 

Tom leaves a son Colin and grandchildren 

BREDA MAY 

The Magazine is very sad to record the death on 7th 

April of its former Editor Mrs Breda May aged 46. 

Breda who lived in Cox Ley,was editor for seven 

years until 2002 when she moved to Old Harlow. She 

was also on the original Committee which produced 

the Village Millennium book ' A History of Hatfield 

Heath'. 

Our sympathies go out to her family and in 

particularly all her children.

‘Lesley Dixon opens new Clinic in Hatfield Heath’ 

Sports Massage & Remedial Practitioner 

After 5 years building a successful Sports Massage clinic 

in Epping, Lesley has recently announced the opening of 

her Hatfield Heath Clinic to meet growing demand for 

treatment of soft tissue, muscle and ligament problems for 

everyday people, as well as sports enthusiasts. 

Lesley has lived in the village for 30 years and you may 

remember her as the organiser of the Sarbir Hatfield Heath 

Festival 5 mile run. Lesley was herself a national track and 

field athlete and for the last 10 years has been the manager

What a topsy-turvy year so far. A lovely February, 

very wet March with snow at Easter followed by 

more snow in April. No wonder the British never tire 

of talking about the weather! What a wonderfully 

diverse country we live in with such changes in 

climate and such a myriad of plant, animal and bird 

life. Great variety and such glory and wonder all 

around us. We are greatly blessed even if we do not 

always appreciate it. 

We are so fortunate to live here in Hatfield Heath. So 

often the community pulls together and supports and 

helps one another. One such occasion is the Village 

Festival which we are looking forward to in June. 

Hopefully the weather will be much better and we can 

enjoy summer sunshine and a great weekend. 

Part of the Festival will be another Songs of Praise 

with the Harlow Salvation Army Band. This will be 

at 6pm at the main arena. This is a wonderful time 

when we can sing some familiar hymns and praise 

God for His goodness and also listen to the brass band 

playing. 

I would like to use hymns or songs that you would 

like included. Please will you let me know your 

choice (on a slip of paper and delivered to the Vicarage 

before the end of May). I will try to have as many 

of the choices as possible within the 40 minutes or so 

of the whole event. 

Let us all look forward to this great village event and 

play our part in it.

RAINFALL MARCH 2008 

In Britain, March 2008 was the 

wettest for seven years and Hatfield 

Heath was the same. However, 

Britain overall recieved 37% more 

rain than average, but here we had 

145% above our norm. This was not 

surprising with 20 raindays. 

March Total 95.75mm (3.77 inches)

to becoming more environmentally conscious and carbon 

neutral within the next 12 months. They calculated that 

they produce around 1100 tonnes of carbon a year, send 

80 tonnes of waste to landfill, spend £130K on electricity. 

Something had to be done and Down Hall didn’t hang 

around! An environmental policy was drawn up and staff 

and suppliers appraised of the company’s environmental 

objectives, the key elements of which include: 

Reducing electricity usage by over 10% 

Reducing landfill waste by over 50% 

Producing over 25% of their own fruit and 

vegetables 

Reducing paper usage by 25% 

Although only in the initial stages, Down Hall has already 

undertaken a number of environmental initiatives 

including changing over 50% of light bulbs to CFL energy 

saving bulbs, printing all menus on recycled board or 

paper, using old newspaper and magazines to produce 

paper logs for the open fire and working with a new 

recycling company. The results have been immediate! 

They have reduced the amount of waste they send to 

landfill by 25% and electricity by 10%. Indeed so

successful has the electricity saving scheme been, that 

they are increasing their target to a 20% reduction within 

the first year. 

Two major initiatives have also been instigated. The 

company vehicle was changed to a Toyota Prius and a 

four-acre site earmarked for a vegetable garden has been 

cleared and prepared ready for sowing and planting in 

early spring. 

All very credible and more than many of his counterparts 

are doing – yet Sean is not about to rest on his laurels. In 

April Down Hall will be switching to 100% renewable 

energy, thereby reducing their carbon output by 

approximately 70%. Water saving devises fitted into toilet 

systems and non-chemical cleaning products will be 

introduced The company is also investigating options of 

harvesting rainwater to flush toilets, gradually switching 

to more locally produced products to reduce ‘Food Miles’ 

and working with the Essex Wildlife Trust to enhance and 

make better use of its 30 acres of protected woodland. 

However it is not enough for the hotel to just do their part 

– guests and suppliers need to commit to the scheme and 

Sean is optimistic about their likely responses. He has met 

with over 60 of his suppliers to inform them of the hotels 

new environmental policy and whilst accepting that it will 

take time, is adamant that in the future all suppliers to 

Down Hall and The Veladail Collection must have their 

own environmental policies and credentials. 

Guests will have the option to pay a ‘carbon off-setting’ 

charge as the hotel has calculated the direct carbon output 

for each type of guest stay ranging from 50p for a one 

night stay to £100 plus for a major conference. 

Down Hall is passionate about reducing its carbon 

footprint to become a ‘carbon-neutral’ hotel, protecting 

and preserving the environment in which we live. One 

option would be simply to calculate their total Carbon 

Dioxide emissions and pay to off-set this against one of a 

number of accredited schemes. However this is not 

enough for Sean, who is resolute in his belief that it is 

imperative that we do all we can to reduce our carbon

emissions naturally, before paying to off-set the 

remainder. 

As Britain’s landfill sites fill up and the global 

temperature continue to rise it is essential that businesses 

lead the way in promoting a greener way of living – after 

all legislation unveiled by the EU in January this year 

challenged Britain to achieve a 16% cut in emissions by 

2020 – a piece of legislation that could well become law 

within a year.

On March 19th 2008 we had 

our last Welcome Club 

meeting. Our chairman Mr 

Tony Jenkins and Barbara 

asked for silence in respect of 

Mr Tom Wright, who 

recently;y died Barbara read 

the minutes and gave a birthday 

posy to Valerie Jackson for her 

Wedding Anniversary. 

Tony read last years A.G.M. 

minutes and told us that money 

will be held in abeyance hopefully for two or three future 

summers lunches for member. He said it was sad that the 

club was disbanded and he thanked all who supported with 

committees and of the donations that the club received. 

There was a gift to him and wife Barbara of a vase and 

flowers also flowers presented by Slyvia. 

Tony thanked Robin. For all her help and that he and 

Barbara have enjoyed their chairmanship. Tony said, 

there may be in the future, someone who will take up the 

cudgel. 

There was a game of Bingo, our speaker Helen Rose was 

indisposed. There was sandwiches, cakes made by 

Barbara and tea a raffle then the meeting closed. 

The club was reformed in 1995 after three years lapse and 

given the name of “Welcome Club” 40 people then 

attended, the charge was 3 pence (old) Mr Dix was elected 

chairman. Halls buses collected members from the 

villages Olive Mays frequently drove a bus for the club 

January 1986 Robin Parkinson took over chairmanship 

from Mrs Halls, Mrs Hilda Ely presided Robin retired 

1997 then Mr Bill Ransome took over from Robin as 

President sadly Bill died 1999. Then Mr Tony Jenkins 

became president with the help of his wife Barbara 

Mention must be made of our much loved secretary Jean 

Piercey sadly she died in 2006. She held things together 

efficiently there were talks, outings, meetings in her 

garden and she made beautiful cakes. 

Now we do owe a lot to Tony and Barbara who have kept 

the club going. until this year the members thanked them 

for their commitment so now we know our members will 

miss them our meetings, the togertherness, the chats, the 

friendships, in fact a big loss. There are members who 

looked forward to the meetings, flowers, cards and if they 

were ill and sometimes lonely . Perhaps who knows there 

may be someone out there who can in the future kick-start. 

For now our members a sad “Adieu” hopefully we will see 

one another but for now our friendships stay always and 

wherever you are don’t forget the “Welcome Club” and 

“Keep smiling”

The second string side dominated possession in the 

friendly match held at Hatfield Heath School Field, but 

were frustrated as their visiting local rivals scored with 

their only three shots on goal. 

Striker Sam Clucas bagged a brace for Hatfield Heath, 

who found themselves 2-0 down at the break. 

His first goal pulled things back to 2-1, but as Heath 

tried to restore parity, Broad Oak struck again to reinstate 

their two-goal cushion. Clucas scored his second 

soon afterwards, but the impressive home side couldn’t 

find a leveller in time. 

The friendly, which took place on 26 th March, followed 

the first encounter between the two sides in November, 

when proceedings ended all-square at 2-2, with all the 

goals coming in the second half.

SHARING THE GLORY 

Following the runaway success of their ‘A’ Team 

counterparts in this season’s West Essex Primary 

School League, Hatfield Heath CPS FC’s ‘B’ Team 

played the first of two friendlies inside nine days looking 

to mirror the glory. 

And they weren’t disappointed as, prior to their home 

game against Hatfield Broad Oak, the side visited 

Howe Green, where they ran out 2-0 winners. 

Cameron Dick and Harry Feest were both on target for 

Hatfield Heath in the second half.

The meeting held at URC Rooms on 18th March 2008 

was the last one to be addressed by our Chairman Liz. 

Wright before her proposed move to Suffolk. The 

Society was treated to an in-depth and well researched 

lecture on some of the older houses in Friars Lane, 

Hatfield Heath. 

Comfortably perched on the edge of a table and 

accompanied by her trusty lap-top she showed us 

numerous images concerning the four major buildings 

under scrutiny in this particular project, Gibsons Farm, 

Hurdle End and Pooles, 

John Dowsett was the first to be mentioned, when in his 

will of 1566 he bequeathed the property now known as 

Gibsons, to his son William. John was an upstanding and 

important member of the local community, serving as a 

juror on the case of the felonious killing by Thomas 

Paviott from Hatfield Broad Oak of Henry Ynfgold or 

Ingold of White Roding. This incident occurred during a 

football match played in March 1567. 

There 59 people registered as living in Hatfield Broad 

Oak at that time. 

On the same jury was a John Sabrisforde regarding the 

transfer of a local property Henry Dawsetts (called 

Dounsheved in 1378) was a one of a group that attacked 

the Priory, and making off with various items of 

property. 

During recent refurbishment of Gibsons, a fascinating 

old window frame was uncovered, and even more 

exciting, several wall and ceiling painting found under 

years of old plaster. 

Hurdle End, a house on the corner of the junction down

Friars Lane was described in the late 16 th early C 17 th . 

The End indicated that it was on the outskirts of the 

village and there seems little doubt that Ardley Crescent 

got it’s name from here. 

The property now Friars Farm goes back to at least 1280 

when John de Sabrithsworthe was involved in a deal 

with St. Bartholomew’s Hospital London. 

Pooles was part of the Barrington estate when in 1766 

Israel Mann was the tenant of the property when house, 

land and buildings were valued at £85.1s 6d. 

Barts Hospital were also involved with this property 

from 1833. 

This report is a skimming over of the enormous detail 

that Liz collated and can be found in her 30 page 

research document held by the Society. 

At the conclusion, refreshments were served and a brief 

presentation was made to Liz by Ivan Wybrew as a 

token of the Society’s appreciation of all her hard work 

over the years.

MARGARET (PEGGY) AUSTIN 

Peggy Austin, who died recently, came to Hatfield Heath 

before the war with her father who was a smallholder. 

They lived at Shrubbs but then moved to the Malt House 

on the Heath near Hunters Meet. 

It was here that the family kept horses and Peggy 

organised gymkhanas and riding classes for many years. 

She worked at Reads the Butchers in the centre of the 

Heath but during the war was a Land Army Girl working 

at local farms 

Peggy moved from the Malt House to a cottage in the 

centre of the village in the 1980s and was remembered as 

a well known character around the Heath for many years.

Current issues are burglary (both commercial and 

dwelling), parking and speeding problems in the 

villages, anti-social behaviour in regular hotspots, 

vehicle crime and criminal damage. 

With an increase in building work in the section, 

building sites are being hit with burglaries and thefts 

and we are appealing to the public to report any 

suspicious people or vehicles. Please record times 

along with descriptions and vehicle details, including

Work is underway to open the Hatfield Heath police 

station more frequently. This will be staffed by Rick 

Jones who was an ex-serving Hatfield Heath officer. 

The station is currently opened between 5-6.30pm on 

Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am also now holding 

monthly beat surgeries at Hatfield Heath Police 

Station. Dates are advertised in village magazines.

PRESERVING FOR POSTERITY 

As we write, April is approaching fast. Alan Titchmarsh 

says of March - the season starts here and the month is all 

go. If you let things in the garden slide now you could be 

in a mess for months. So by now a lot of flower, vegetable 

and herb seeds will have been sown and the fresh green 

shoots will be appearing. But what of the remains of the 

seed packet that you don’t require this year? Apart from 

giving them to your friends is it possible to save them for 

future use? 

Given a little care, seeds can be kept satisfactorily for 

many years and, when eventually planted, germination 

rates will be very little reduced. Put them back into the 

packet in which they came, seal as best you can and keep 

them in a cool, dry place. 

Saving seed for posterity is, however, a different matter. 

You may have heard in the news of Norway’s plans 

to build a “doomsday vault” inside a mountain 

on an Arctic island to hold a seed bank of all 

known varieties of the world’s crops. The 

Norwegian government will hollow out a 

cave on the ice-bound island of Spitzbergen 

which will be designed to withstand global 

catastrophes like nuclear war or natural 

disasters that would destroy the planets sources 

of food. 

Here, in the UK, we have a similar venture. Wakehurst 

Place near Haywards Heath in West Sussex is a National 

Trust property funded, administered and maintained by 

the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew. In a purpose designed 

building adjacent to the mansion the Wellcome Trust is 

creating the Millenium Seed Bank which aims to house 

seeds from one tenth of the world’s flora by 2009 to save 

species from extinction in the wild. It has already secured 

the future of virtually all the UK’s native flowering plants. 

Visitors can enjoy an interactive 

exhibition following the journey of a 

seed from collection and identification 

to drying and cold storage in sub-zero 

temperatures in the massive 

underground vaults. It is planned to 

safeguard 24,000 plant species from around 

the globe for hundreds of years. The involvement of the 

Wellcome Trust, one of the world’s biggest medical 

research charities is recognition of the significance of 

plants as sources of medical benefits. 

At their meeting on Wednesday 28th. May the Hatfield 

Heath Gardening Club will be hearing a talk by Peter 

Beale entitled “Light Among the Trees”.

busy getting organised for its first ever Museum 

Family Fun Day. 

The event will be held on Saturday May 17 from 

10am until 4pm at police headquarters in

Becky Latchford, museum curator, said: “The 

Museum Family Fun Day is an opportunity for us to 

promote the museum and Essex Police as a whole.
