The Rev. Dr. John Anderson Graham, while working as a
missionary in the Kalimpong area became particularly
interested in groups of children who seemed to him to
suffer a number of hardships. These children were mostly
the illegitimate sons and daughters of the British Tea
Planters and the local Nepalese, Lepcha and Assamese
mothers.
Graham voiced his concerns at the General Assembly of
the Church of Scotland in 1895 and then on return to India
started about setting up the homes. The Homes opened
with six children on the 24th. September 1900 as
‘St.Andrew’s Colonial Homes’.
Education and religion was provided in equal measure and
to tight Scottish principals. Today there are nearly 1400
children at the school, roughly divided between fully fee
paying, partial fee paying and fully sponsored. Sponsoring
a child costs about £900 per annum.
Mr. Philip Gibson, from Kelso, was appointed Chief
Executive (Principal) eighteen months ago and he has
made significant and beneficial changes at the Homes.
Security has been tightened, budget control enhanced, the
Cottages (where the Children are accommodated)
refurbished and catering arrangements improved.
On Sunday the 21st. February we had morning service in
the beautiful Katherine Graham Memorial Chapel, opened
in 1925 and named after Dr.Graham’s wife who died in
1919. After the service we were entertained by the School
Choir some of whom toured the UK in 2008.
All in all a very rewarding challenge and I am grateful to
all in Hatfield Heath and Sawbridgeworth who helped me
reach nearly £11,000 in sponsorship money, in total the
group raised over £65,000 for the UK Dr Graham’s Homes
Charity.
