Pastor’s Corner
This weekend we celebrate the Nativity of John the
Baptist – an unusual feast for a Sunday, but an important one.
Two thousand years after God’s covenant with Abraham, God
sent John, the last and greatest prophet, to His chosen people.
John was the one who prepares the way for the coming of the
new, everlasting King. The birth of John the Baptist is like a
huge billboard that sums up the whole history of salvation and
says, “God hasn’t forgotten about us, and He never will forget
about us!”
This is the truly amazing thing about God – not just
that He exists, but that He is so interested in our lives and so
active in the world. God cares about sinners and wants to save
them.
God does the extraordinary through the ordinary. For
example, God gives us evidence of God’s constant action
through the beauty of creation, the love of friends and family
and the normal experiences of life. Think about the weight of a
proton and the charge of an electron, the most basic realities
behind the very possibility of life on earth. Why don’t the
supposed laws of evolution change these realities? Why don’t
they fluctuate? What keeps them steady? The answer is God.
God created the universe and God’s loving plan keeps
sustaining it.
John the Baptist’s whole life, from his birth to his
martyr’s death, was a billboard for this all important truth, that
God is active in the world. John’s awareness of this truth
spurred him on to show and remind people of God’s interest in
their lives, through his example, words and actions. He was
faithful to his life’s mission, because he knew that God wanted
to work through him to pave the way for Christ, to change
people’s lives for the better.
The Church, which includes you and me, is renewing
our awareness of that same truth, and the first and most
important place where we can carry out that mission is in our
families. It means to be like Christ, to be a kind of brother and
sister that Christ would be if He were in our place. It means to
be a Christ-like father, mother, cousin or grandparent. It
means striving every day to be honest, patient and forgiving, to
care as much about the successes and problems of others as
about our own.
But none of us can be Christ-like
if we depend on our own strength. It was
God who gave St. John the Baptist his
mission and it was God’s grace that
enabled him to fulfill it. Jesus feeds us
with God’s Word and Sacraments, giving
us the same grace, that very strength that
has worked wonders throughout salvation
history.
God is still active in our world and He will prove it to
us once again through the Mass, the Eucharist, by coming to
us in Holy Communion. When God does this, let’s thank God
for all He has done for us, and let’s ask God to give us the
courage we need to help Him do even more.

When Bob was in the army, he was lined up with the
rest of his platoon at drill one morning. His commanding
officer drew a line in the dirt in front of the platoon. “OK,” the
officer barked, “I want every man who is henpecked by his
wife to step over the line.” The entire platoon stepped over the
line, with the exception of Bob
The commanding officer walked up to Bob, looked
him in the eye and said, “Soldier, why didn’t you step
forward?”
Bob replied, “My wife told me not to.”

Reflection Corner
As we celebrate the birth of St. John the Baptist this weekend we hear the story of his naming. The tradition of passing a name
on in the family was much stronger in the Near East than it is in present day America. A string of names helped identify a person's
tribe as well as his relationship within the group. When Elizabeth and Zechariah wanted to give their child the name "John," their
neighbors and relatives immediately pointed out that none of their other relatives had that name.
In Luke's Gospel, what happens to John precedes -and in some ways foretells- what will happen to Jesus. There is the
announcement of a miraculous conception. There is some hesitation on the part of the husband. A name is given to each child by
an angel. There is a prediction of what this child will be. The fact that John's name (as well as Jesus') was divinely selected points
to a greater reality at work. God has something to do with the direction of these lives. We, who carry the name Christian, should
also recognize that God has something to do with the direction of our lives as well.

St. Joseph’s Youth Camp...
Sign up for the St. Joseph’s Youth Camp at
Mormon Lake (sponsored by the Knights of
Columbus). The camp offers many activities -
horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking,
arts and crafts, campfires, and more.
Sessions start July 1, with Teen Week for ages 13-15, which offers
additional leadership and team building challenges. Three more weekly
sessions for kids 8-12 start July 8, 15, and 22. The $498 fee includes
all activities, meals and snacks, transportation from Tempe and back,
camper tee shirt and DVD. Groups of 10 or more will get one

Notre Dame Prep Youth Football Camp

The Miraculous Medal Novena is prayed every Tuesday evening from
7pm to 7:30pm in the church. It is led by either a priest or deacon
and is a powerful experience of prayer, devotional music and
reflection on the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bring your petitions with you
and experience the grace of this holy time in your church.
Come Holy Spirit

faithful and kindle in them the fire of your

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
