Time to Remember
The Beauty of Faith
Year of Faith—2012 / 2013
Pope Benedict XVI says it is time to remember the beauty and
centrality of faith, to go deeper into it and strengthen it, and for this
purpose he has declared a "Year of Faith." The special year, which
commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican
Council and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of
The Catholic Church, will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on
November 24, 2013, the feast of Christ the King. The 13-month
celebration "will be a moment of grace and challenge for our ever fuller
conversion to God, as well as, a way to strengthen our faith in Him and
announce Him with joy to the people of our time."
The year will give us a chance to remember the beauty and the
centrality of faith, the need to strengthen and deepen it, both at the
personal and the community level. Throughout the “Year of Faith,” our
parish will discover new ways to support our parish’s vision: to faithfully
evangelize and foster Stewardship as a way of life by engaging in works of
ministry founded on Hospitality, Prayer, Formation and Service.

Pastor’s Corner
In a sense, belief in God is very uncomfortable because it
increases our responsibility. If there is no God, then there would
be no point in being responsible – it’s just chaos and eternal night.
If someone comes to us and asks our help, we should not
turn him away with pious words, saying, “Have faith; take your
troubles to God and He will help.” In such cases we should act as
if there was no God, as if there was only one person in the entire
world who could help this person, namely, me.
Reliance on the providence of God is an essential part of
Christianity. But it must not be used as an excuse for doing
nothing. We mustn’t stand back and wait for God to do it all.
God is not going to come down and do it Himself. God works
through us.
One winter’s day a man came upon a small boy sitting
begging on a wind-swept city bridge. The boy was shivering
from the cold and obviously in need of a good meal. On seeing
him the man got very angry and said to God, “Lord, why don’t
you do something about this boy?”
And God replied, “I have already done something for him,”
This surprised the man so he said, “I hope you don’t mind
my saying this but what whatever you did, it doesn’t seem to
be working.”
“I agree with you there,” God replied.
“By the way, what did you do?” the man asked.
“I made you,” came the reply
There is nothing wrong in asking God to right wrongs and
comfort the suffering. But what we must remember is that He
has trusted these tasks to us.
We are God’s instruments. That is our dignity and also our
responsibility. We must become convinced that without our
love others will not achieve the things God has willed for them.
We see this so clearly from our Gospel reading. There we see
how Jesus shared His work of spreading the kingdom of God
with the apostles.
Of course, we may ask ourselves, “What can I do?” We
have to answer that question for ourselves.
An unemployed couple lived in Dallas, Texas. They were
very poor and used to go around the city collecting aluminum
beer cans which they sold for recycling. In their work they
looked into many a trash bin.
One morning they made a very sad
discovery in one particular bin. In it they
found the body of a new-born baby. They
reported it to the police, who carried out an
investigation but failed to trace the parents.
So there was no one to bury the baby.
The couple then knew what they had to
do. They themselves would see to it that the
unknown baby got a decent funeral. But
this would cost money, something they had very little of. The
wife pawned her only valuable possession, a diamond
engagement ring, to help pay the funeral expenses.
Thanks to their efforts, the baby went to its final resting
place in a white coffin covered with flowers. The tears the
couple shed were as pure as those shed by Jesus at the grave
of His friend, Lazarus.
To be a source of light in the world one doesn’t need to be
either rich or famous. All one needs is a warm heart.

Never trust a dog to watch your food.
Never smart off to a teacher whose eyes and ears are
twitching
When you want something expensive, ask your
grandparents.
Sleep in your clothes so you will be dressed in the
morning.
When your Dad is mad and asks you, “Do I look stupid?”
don’t answer him.
Don’t pick on your sister when she is holding a baseball
bat.
When you get a bad grade in school, show it to your Mom
when she is on the phone.
Never try to baptize a cat!
Never dare your little brother to paint the family car.
(Last but not least!) Forget the cake. Go for the icing!

Reflection Corner
The Gospel this weekend describes the clear mission that Jesus gives to the Twelve. They went forth to preach repentance,
drive out demons, and cure the sick. These were their tasks. The end of today's Gospel story tells us that they did have some
success in what they were to do. Demons were expelled and many of the sick were cured. (We'll get a follow-up report in next
week's Gospel.)
We may be reluctant to consider that the mission of the Twelve is our mission as well. After all, who doesn't want to have a
second tunic (or, to put it in the clothing options of today, a second pair of pants or another dress)? But the mission isn't really
about seeing how much we can live without. Rather, it is accepting the authority that Jesus gives to His followers. For most of us,
that rests in sharing the good news of what Jesus means to us, being attentive to the sick and their needs, and reaching out to
those who are afflicted by demons of loneliness, despair, fear, and anxiety. Christ's mission is ours.

The 2012 Emmaus Retreat for Persons with Developmental
Disabilities will be held August 17-19 at Living Water Retreat

18 and over who has a developmental or intellectual disability.
The theme this year is “Building Fabulous Foundations of Faith
Part 2 - The Journey of Grace.”

Mother-Daughter Retreat
The 5th Annual St. Philomena Mother/Daughter Retreat "The
Gift" for moms and their daughters ages 11 to 14 will be
Friday, August 24 - Sunday, August 26, 2012, at the Scottsdale

to share with your daughter the gift of femininity and God's
plan for marital intimacy using Theology of the Body. Price

Tips for a Spiritual Summer

Vacation Church Search - Rather than taking a vacation from church, make church an exciting part of your vacation by
celebrating Mass somewhere new. While on vacation, make it a point to find an old, popular or interesting place of worship
nearby. If you’re in the tropics, search for an open-air church. If you’re vacationing on the East Coast, check out an historical
church. If you’re opting for a stay-cation this summer and sticking close to home, visit a new parish in your community. You
never know where you will find inspiration.
Stop To Smell the Roses - Take time to appreciate God’s world around you. Walk barefoot in the grass or on the beach. Swim in a
natural pond, lake or ocean. Sit under a beautiful old tree or go for a hike. And while you’re in nature, spend some one-on-one
time with God. Share your gratitude for the gifts in your life, including the gifts of nature and the environment, and enjoy your
time surrounded by God’s beautiful creations.
Write It Down - Start a Summer Spiritual Journal. Each day, record moments when you feel close to God and moments when God
feels further away in your daily life. Writing them down will help you reflect upon these times, and may bring to light new
moments of strength or challenge in your faith. In addition to your personal reflections, write down quotes, phrases or scripture
that are meaningful and relevant to you at that moment. You might remember something you’ve read or heard from a friend
during the day. In doing so, you may find new ways to think about your daily interactions with God and others.
Class It Up - Take a class or go on a retreat to rejuvenate your spirituality. Find a summer Bible study or discussion group in your parish or
community. Sign up for an art class to feed your creative side. Have you always wanted to learn a musical instrument? Now is your
time to give it a try. Or take a cooking class to improve your culinary skills. At the end of the summer, show off your newfound talents to
friends and family by playing some music or hosting a dinner party. If you have an unplanned long weekend, find a religious retreat
near you or visit one of these locations and have your own personal retreat that might include journaling, a favorite prayer, and reading
cherished scripture or other spiritual texts in order to reconnect with God.

Volunteers Needed to Deliver Meals
The Area Agency On Aging needs volunteers to deliver lunch
meals to homebound seniors in the North Scottsdale and
Paradise Valley area weekdays between 10:30am and
12:30pm. This is an easy rewarding service that only takes
about two hours one day a week. To many of our clients our
visits mean contact with the outside world and a chance to
remain living at home. Some of our volunteers have left for the
summer leaving routes open. We ask each volunteer to
commit to the same day each week for 2 hours. Contact Diane

Students Can Continue Catholic Education
The University of Mary–Tempe is offering undergraduate
coursework in Catholic Studies and Theological Studies at the
All Saints Newman Center adjacent to the ASU Tempe
campus. As a complement to their ASU major, students can
enroll in a single course or pursue a minor or major in either of
the two disciplines. The partnership between the University of
Mary–Tempe and ASU provides students the opportunity
to continue their Catholic education without going out-of-state.

with Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and
Benediction at 7pm. Come and spend time with our Lord.

Miraculous Medal Novena
The Miraculous Medal Novena is prayed every Tuesday evening from
7pm to 7:30pm in the church. It is led by either a priest or deacon
and is a powerful experience of prayer, devotional music and
reflection on the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bring your petitions with you
and experience the grace of this holy time in your church.
