Pastor’s Corner
Each year on this Palm Sunday celebration, the Church
reads the account of the Passion of Jesus. As we listen to it,
we are reminded of the cowardice of the followers who
abandoned Him in His hour of greatest need, of the
wickedness of the religious leaders who plotted His death, and
of the cruelty of the soldiers who carried out the execution.
And we need to be reminded of these things because we have
a kinship with them. But that is not the purpose of the Passion
reading. We hear too much bad news as it is.
The emphasis is not there. The emphasis is on Jesus, the
central character in the story. What we are remembering is the
fidelity, the courage, the sheer goodness of Jesus. Against the
sheer darkness of Calvary His goodness shines all the more
brightly. The day of His death is not called “Bad Friday,” but
“Good Friday.” What makes it good is the love of Jesus.
“Greater love no one has than to lay down one’s life for one’s
friends.” It is that love that we are remembering this week.
The early Christians saw in the passion and death of Jesus
the triumph of failure. With the help of the Scriptures, they
came to understand that this was precisely how Jesus
triumphed and entered into His glory. His glory cannot be
separated from His passion.
On the surface, it may seem as if it was a defeat for Jesus.
It was not a defeat. It was a victory. It was the triumph of good
over evil, of love over hate, of light over darkness, and of life
over death.
The Passion Story shows how Jesus responded to what
was done to Him. He absorbed all the violence, transformed it,
and returned it as love and forgiveness. This is the victory of
love over all the powers of destruction. There was nothing but
love in Him. Even when they nailed His hands and feet, He was
loving. It helps to think about that when we are going through
hard times.
It is consolation for us to know that Jesus suffered. Yet,
His suffering would have been wasted if He had not endured it
with love. It was not Jesus’ suffering that saved the world, but
His love. Anyone who pretends to love suffering is crazy.
Suffering is something that you would
give almost anything to avoid. Yet, we are
glad to suffer for someone we love. Our
love gives meaning to our suffering. Jesus
was the Good Shepherd dying because He
loved his sheep.
Suffering that is merely endured does
nothing for our souls, except perhaps harden them. It is the
spirit in which we bear our burden that matters. All the coal
and firewood in the world are no use without a fire.
It is not suffering that redeems the world, but love. It is not
our suffering that God wants but our love. However, love
inevitably brings pain. But, it also brings great joy. Christians
must not only accept suffering; they must make it holy. Love
makes it holy.
This week is Holy Week. The most important days of this
week are Holy Thursday (7:00pm), Good Friday (7:00pm) and
the Easter Vigil (7:00pm). We will have other prayer
opportunities that you are invited to participate in, but these
three are the key celebrations.

Good Friday Collection
Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians in the Holy Land.
Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a pontifical collection
requested by Pope Benedict XVI, the annual Good Friday collection offers a direct link for
parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on
Good Friday, you are supporting Christians in the Holy Land. Franciscans and others in the Holy
Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining
the shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. Please be as generous as your
abundance allows.

The First Fruits of Your Labor
Regardless of whether you tithe or use some other method of
measure, the return you make to God
should come from the "first fruits" of your
labor. This means that your return to God
comes first, before paying all your other
bills.
If we give simply from what we have left
over after all our needs are met, it is not really sacrificial. If
there is no pain in our giving, then we can be sure that we are
not giving enough.

Marriage Preparation
“Marriage in the Lord” - April 13
This class is intended for couples where neither partner has
previously been married. The entire one-day program must be
completed to receive a certificate of completion that fulfils the
requirements for the Married Life Skills Training, Step 3, of the
Diocese of Phoenix marriage preparation program.

Scottsdale Adult Day Health Services
For adults of all ages who need support and assistance during
the day, it’s essential to find a caring environment that provides
activity, rehabilitation, and companionship. Adult Day
Health Services provides seniors and adults with disabilities a

Renew Repair Refresh
“What is the Status of the RRR Plans and Capital Campaign?”
Our community has provided many ideas and suggestions for the renovation. The parish staff, architect and builder
have been working hard to incorporate these ideas. Thankfully our architect did a great job of listening to our church’s
needs and the community’s ideas to update the plan. We are moving into the final phase before construction and next
month we will have new plans ready for viewing.
The good news is that we are meeting with the Diocesan Review Board in mid-April for final construction and
financing approval. The architectural plans are on track and will be completed for this meeting. The challenging
news is that our project financing is uncertain. The Diocese requires that we have $2.3 million in cash and pledges
by mid-April to start construction in May, 2013. Over 400 families have already pledged or donated $1,150,000 to
this campaign. However, these figures represent less than 20% of the registered families in our parish who have
generously donated 50% of the funds needed for us to move forward. We know that The Community of the Blessed
Sacrament is a generous parish. If you have not already pledged to the Renew Repair Refresh Capital Campaign,
please prayerfully consider what your sacrificial gift will be. Complete a pledge form (in the vestibules, front office
and on line at www.blessedsacramentscotts.org under RRR campaign) and return it to the parish office this Holy
Week. With everyone’s pledge, we will receive approval from the Diocese and construction will start in May. In a
few short months we will be celebrating Christmas Mass in our new church.
Thank you to all who have already pledged to this campaign and those of you who are doing so this week. Your
gifts will help us Renew Refresh Repair our house for the Lord by Christmas 2013.

Blessed Sacrament High Tea event, sponsored by Mary’s Knights, on Sunday, April 21 from 2 to 4pm in
the Social Hall.
All women of the parish and their guests are invited to enjoy a special menu of delightful tastes,
complete with a fashion show in a light springtime ambiance of fine china, background music, flowers
and pleasant conversation. Of course, you are invited to don your favorite Easter bonnet—and gloves, if
you wish!

“Tears Speak – But Spirits Soar”
This is an ongoing support group for women who have
suffered the loss of a child to abortion and wish to experience
healing through sharing in a confidential, safe environment.
Group meetings will take place on a requested basis. Those
interested in meeting are asked to call Church of the Holy
Spirit, Tempe at 480-838-7474 – ask for Tears Speak/Patty.
Contact will be made as to the next meeting date. Meetings,
when held, are at Mount Claret Retreat Center, 4633 N. 54th
Street, Phoenix and, generally, held on the second Tuesday of
a month, in the evening.
Knights of Columbus Scholarships
The 2013 Knights of Columbus Scholarship Applications are
available in the Parish Office. Scholarships are awarded to
Catholic High School and Catholic College Students.
Graduating high school seniors may also apply for scholarships
to the University of Arizona, ASU and NAU. Details are include
in the application package. Over $117,000 has been awarded
to date. Scholarships are made possible by Blessed Sacrament
parishioners through the generous support of Social Dinners
and K of C fundraisers. Scholarship deadline is May 10, 2013.

“A Biblical Walk Through the Mass”

Rosary For an End to Abortion
On March 29, noon to 1:30pm, join other Catholics to pray for an
end to abortion and all threats to innocent human life at the annual
Good Friday Rosary at Planned Parenthood, 5771 W. Eugie
Ave., Glendale. Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted will lead the faithful in
this traditional meditative prayer of humility and love . This is the
closing celebration to the local 40 days for Life Prayer effort to end
abortion in Phoenix, an ecumenical prayer and awareness effort. A

“Faithful for Life” Fundraiser
