Pastor’s Corner...
The readings this weekend give us encouragement. From Isaiah we read, “Courage, do not be
afraid.” From the Letter of James we read, “Be Patient! Do not lose heart!” And, finally, from the
Gospel we read the words of Jesus to His cousin, John the Baptist, “Happy the person who does not
lose faith in me.” Although spoken a long time ago, we need to drink them in, because at times we too
can find ourselves in dark situations. We might be going along nicely and then the storm hits; unemployment, a
serious illness, a death in the family … These kinds of things shatter our faith in the right order of things and even
in God. At times like these may we hear the words of Isaiah, “Courage! Do not be afraid.”
Modern life is becoming increasingly stressful. Christmas brings added work and more stress. Some people
feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will be able to cope. In times like these may we hear the words of Isaiah:
“Courage! Do not be afraid.”
Each of us knows the kind of situations that causes is to be fearful and doubtful. We can’t stop ourselves
from feeling afraid. But, we must not allow our fears to cripple us. Courage is not never feeling afraid; it is feeling
afraid and going on in spite of it.
Faith is a fragile thing. We mustn’t be surprised when doubts arise within us. God will understand our
doubts in a world like this. But, blessed are we if we do not lose faith in Jesus. And twice blessed are we if, like
Jesus, we are able to show forth our faith in deeds of love and mercy.
I hope you will join us after the Masses this weekend for some holiday cheer and to meet some of the staff
who will be serving. It is just our way of wishing you a very Merry Christmas. Stop by and say hello if you can.
Well, we are almost there. Christmas – that wonderful time of year. It is a time of hope for the world, for
each of us. May “Peace of Earth” be God’s gift to you. He is with us – not just in the tabernacle, but truly with us
always, no matter where we are. Allow Him to walk with you, share your burdens, and heal your wounds.
Be kind to yourself this week. Don’t lose yourself in all the holiday rush. Pray for me as I will for you!
God Bless! Fr. Pat
Third Week of Advent 2007
Take some time to celebrate this week. This Sunday has traditionally been called “Gaudate” or “Rejoice.”
Rose colored vestments can be worn. You will see a pink candle in the Advent wreath. There is excitement in the
air as we draw closer to the anniversary of our Lord’s birthday. Would a stranger know we are followers of Christ?
Here are some activities to witness and be gifts to others:
• Advent and Christmas programming is aired nightly on Radio Family Rosary, KXXT, 1010 on the AM dial.
Listen as a family and pray for peace in the world, our hearts, and in our families.
• If you missed our Advent Communal Reconciliation, attend one at a nearby parish. See the list on page 10 of
this bulletin.
• Spend some time calling on friends or sending Christmas cards to those who are close to you.
• Bring small useful gifts to a local nursing home. Maybe participate in caroling for the residents.
• When you are shopping, wear a smile and be kind to all you meet. We have a lot to praise God and
celebrate about. Why not pass it on to others who may not be as fortunate.
Stewardship...
How Much Time Does God Get?
God has blessed each of us with 1,440 minutes in
every day and 10,080 minutes in every week. How
many of those minutes do we give back to God each
week? Studies show that the majority of our time goes
to sleeping, working, and watching TV. In fact,
typically over 1,000 minutes a week or about 10% of
our time goes to watching TV. In contrast, how much
time does God get? Typically, less than 100 minutes or
less than 1% of our time is devoted to spiritual
activities like prayer and worship. How can you give
God a little more of your time? Consider Mass
attendance, prayer, spiritual reading, Eucharistic
adoration, or volunteering.
Small Christian Communities…
A Small Christian Community is a group of people who meet regularly to study scripture, share their own faith stories, and cultivate
interpersonal relationships among themselves as members of a larger faith community. Call the parish office for information.
In the Gospel, John the Baptist is in prison and he is asking questions. In particular, John asks, “Are you the
one who is to come or should we look for another/” Jesus gives no easy answers, nor does He rescue John from death row.
Jesus asks John to reflect on the signs and to discern. Jesus sends John’s disciples back to the prison to tell John that the blind
see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, lepers are cleansed, the dead are raised, and the poor and lowly have good news proclaimed
to them. For Jesus, these events are the “precious fruit” of His ministry. John, of course, was familiar with Old Testament
scriptures and would know that these very events were foretold to be signs of the coming of the Messiah. John is being
invited to know Jesus as Messiah by the fruit of His work on behalf of the poor and the downtrodden. Jesus is Messiah,
not as popular ruler, but as a consoling and restoring healer. This Messiah call us to join Him on His mission.
Rejoice in the saving work of God! Rejoice in the opportunity and responsibility to participate in the saving work
of God! Be fruitful and rejoice!
Care for Iraqi Refugees
In the first reading today, Isaiah describes the joy of those who return home after exile: “Those whom the
Lord has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy, they will meet with joy and
gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.” Isaiah 35:10.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has expressed concern for those forced into exile by the continued
violence in Iraq: “The war and ongoing instability in Iraq have resulted in a significant flow of refugees from Iraq, especially
among Christians and other religious minorities who suffer attacks and discrimination. Chaldean Patriarch Emmanuel-Karim
Delly of Baghdad has pleaded with Western governments to protect Iraqi refugees. He noted that although he hoped that
people would stay in Iraq, he understood that people fled when ‘children get kidnapped or killed, when there’s no security, no
peace.’ 1 Our Conference urges the United States and the international community to provide greater support and attention to
the plight of Iraqi refugees and asylum seekers. We continue to believe that U.S. policy toward Iraqi refugees and asylum
seekers is too restrictive.
“Our Conference calls upon the U.S. to protect Iraqi refugees and asylum seekers, including the Christian and other
religious minorities fleeing Iraq. In particular, we call on the government to (1) designate Iraqi religious minorities as a group
of special concern for the purposes of determining refugee resettlement eligibility, (2) eliminate current restrictions on family
reunification eligibility in the refugee admissions program, (3) provide for expeditious, emergent refugee processing directly
from Iraq for cases of particular vulnerability, and (4) carefully consider Iraqi asylum seekers’ claims, especially religious
minorities and other vulnerable individuals, and not reject their asylum requests on the presumption that conditions
allow for a safe return to Iraq.”
Catechetical Ministry...
Kudos to Pat Hersey who had a vision of celebrating Jesus’ birth and shared it with the parish through the
children in “The Christmas Story Pageant”. Blessed Sacrament is blessed with her faith and tireless efforts.
Thank you, Pat and all the MANY hands that helped you create THE Pageant.
WAIT. WAIT in line. WAIT at the stop light. WAIT for an appointment. WAIT while “on hold.” John
the Baptist was waiting for the Messiah and He came! We’re waiting for Santa and the excitement of friends and
family coming together. While you WAIT take the time to say some Hail Mary’s for the people you love and the
people you have difficulty loving.
Add to your Jesse Tree: Wings for Gabriel and be a secret angel for someone, a saw for Joseph and see what
you can repair around the house, a lily for Mary and talk about how mothers and grandmothers are a blessing.
