A Publication of Mosaic Law Congregation
Passover and Mitzvah
Passover begins on Monday Night,
March 25th. The Selling of Hametz
must be accomplished no later than
2pm on March 22nd.
One of the 613 commandments of the Torah commands us
to leave a corner of the field unharvested, so that the poor
can gather gleanings of wheat for themselves.
This ancient Jewish practice is reflected in Maot Chitim,
the centuries old custom of gathering wheat to provide the
Jewish needy with matzo and other holiday foods, including
wine/grape juice, for the observance of Pesach.
In contemporary terms, Maot Chitim is now observed year
-round with a Kosher Food Bank under the aegis of our
Jewish Federation. I encourage everyone to support the
food bank by dropping off kosher food items at the
Federation offices in midtown Sacramento (2014 Capitol
Ave). These items are available to every Jewish individual
and family in need of assistance.
Each year, before Passover, it is the obligation of every
,חָמֵץ / חמץ (Hebrew: Jewish household to sell their Hametz
are leavened foods that are forbidden on the Jewish
holiday of Passover. The form for selling your Hametz is
on page 3) and make a donation to a charitable organization.
We have always earmarked MAZON, the Jewish
Response to Hunger, as the recipient, but this year I urge
everyone in our congregation to take part in this Mitzvah
of selling your Hametz and making your tax deductible
contribution to Jewish Helping Hands, with a notation to
earmark your donation to Rabbanit Kapach’s Passover
needs. I hope that you will pass this information on to your
own individual lists of friends, family, and acquaintances.
In 1983 when I led my first congregational trip from
Phoenix, Arizona to Israel, I was most fortunate to meet
the Rabbanit Bracha Kapach. Danny Siegel, a Mitzvah
Mensch, poet and a past Mosaic Law weekend Scholar-in-
Residence had put me in touch with the Rebbetzin and told
me about the important Mitzvot she does every day,
including providing wedding dresses for poor women all
over Israel. On that trip to Israel, Rabbanit Bracha Kapach
arranged for my entire tour group to be invited to a Yeminite
wedding in Jerusalem. I will never ever forget that
amazing and unique experience. She is a true Tzadeket/
Mitzvah hero in the classic sense of the word.
Danny Siegel recently gave me an update and told me that
donations throughout the year for her “regular” Mitzvah
work continue to be disastrously low, and she is greatly
concerned again this year as she was the last couple of
years about her ability to provide for Pesach for as many
people as she would like.
For more than 50 years, the Rabbanit has provided food
packages in Israel for Passover for many hundreds of families,
tens of thousands of individuals in all. With the help
of many volunteers, in the past few years her incredibly
fine and beautifully well-organized program has managed
to provide from 2,500 to more than 6,000 packages for
families and individuals.
The Rabbanit distributes as many packages as the contributions can cover.
The Rabbanit is now 90 years old, and she should not have to be burdened with
this kind of concern. Our efforts can allow her to do what she does best,
Mitzvahs, with ease and with the sippuk nefesh (soul-satisfaction) she deserves.
So, please, do not delay. Please complete the Selling of Hametz Form and email,
fax or drop it off to our synagogue office. And, please consider making your contribution
to Jewish Helping Hands and designating the donation for Rabbanit
Bracha Kapah’s Passover needs. Send your checks to our synagogue office and
we will see that they arrive to the New York organization and transferred directly
to Israel before Passover.
Providing for those in need, in a way protective of their dignity, is an act of
chesed (lovingkindness) and has been a cornerstone of Jewish belief and practice
since the days of Israel's ancient past.
We are our brother's keeper and, in so doing, reflect the G-dliness that resides in
each of us.
On behalf of Judy, Avi, Amy, Josh, Ari, Matt, Chelsea, Ethan and Eliana, I wish
all of you a wonderful happy and healthy Passover.
SAVE THE DATE:
"Happiness is nothing more than good
health and a bad memory"
Albert Schweitzer
MAY 4th: Sisterhood Shabbat. Special each year is the
beautiful Shabbat that Linda Reitzenstein creates for the
congregation. While our name has changed to the
Women's Network, we want to keep the tradition of calling
our special day on the bimah "Sisterhood Shabbat." Linda
brings her special magic to the morning with her ability to
get so many involved and give our women reason to qvell.
MAY 19th: Torah Fund Luncheon. We are excited to
have Ricki Lobel and Gen Lobel present our JTS day
again this year. Plans are underway and it will be another
"do not miss" event. This event has become so much more
than just a way to support the seminary. The day is filled
with warmth, creativity and friendship. Plan to attend.
Apology: Please accept our apology for the changes in
dates as shown on our magnet. The Sisterhood Shabbat
original weekend was the only Shabbat the RABBI TAFF
could gather his family for their Ufruf. He asked if we
would consider another date and we were happy to make
the change for this very special event.
Directory Advertisers: I would like to mention our directory
advertisers. It is so important that we support them as
they are an important source of revenue for our organization.
Visit the delicious restaurants that have participated.
Say hi to Leo and Kathy when you visit The Greek Village
Inn. When you stop at Famous Kabob you are likely to see
Sha, the brother of Mehrnaz and Bebe. Scott's on the
River, always a fine dining experience, Alan was so kind
to continue advertising with us even though he closed the
closest location. A visit to any of the Haines Brothers
Suzie Burger locations is a treat, whether at Riverside,
33rd Street, or their locations in Folsom and Davis. (Oh,
those sweet potato fries!) Our boutique shops are special
and the service vendors are there to assist you. Be sure to
think of Parkside Compounding Pharrmacy and Wellness
Center for your prescription and gift needs. John and
Michelle Ortego are members of our congregation and
offer delivery service to their fellow congregants. Michelle
is a gifted buyer and when you visit the store, you will find
unique gifts and cards. Use the coupons that they have
included with their inside front cover page. They are a full
service pharmacy, boutique and spa.
Volunteers: We continue to encourage our membership to
consider volunteer time with us. Our gift shop could use
your services 4 hours a month. Consider teaming up with a
Shiva Committee of Arlene Pearl, Janie
Gumpert, and Judy Persin have given their
notice that they cannot continue with this project
after June. Thank you, ladies, for your
years of dedication and kindness that you have
given to this community. We now need others
to step up and provide this important mitzvah
to those in mourning. If the Shiva Committee
has helped you in your time of need, you know
what it means to have the comfort of knowing
that the committee will provide for your needs.
Perhaps you will want to return the favor and
do the mitzvah for other families in need.
Gift Shop: Don't forget to check us out when
you have any gift needs. We are in the process
of making some changes in the shop, so keep
See you in shul.
