From Cantor RosnerAn article by Rabbi Bradley Artson,Dean of the Ziegler School of RabbinicStudies at the American JewishUniversity, talks about a difficulty intranslating the word ‏.‏baruchברוךMany prayer books will translate thisword as “praised” or “blessed.” RabbiArtson warns that these translationsare insufficient. Rabbi Artson continues by remindingus that ברך also means “knee.” Could this mean thatthere is a physical element to a bracha? Should we notonly pray with our minds and souls, but our bodies aswell? In the Bar’chu, we literally bend our knees as wesay the words “bar'chu” and “baruch.”In the Amidah, we often use our bodies to express ourprayers. Some of the choreography from the first half ofthe Amidah is as follows:We enter into the Amidah (literally translated as “thestanding”) by taking three steps backward and threesteps forward, as if we are transporting ourselves toanother place. At the beginning and then at the end of the A’vot, thefirst bracha of the Amidah, we bend at our knees at“baruch”, bow at “ata”, and return to a vertical stancebefore saying the name of G-d.The ScrollIn the Kedushah on the following page, we emulateangels. As our legs are already close together throughoutthe Amidah, we also turn left, right, and bow, emulatingthe angels calling out to each other in preparationfor “Kadosh Kadosh Kadosh,” or Holy, Holy,Holy, raising our toes the last two times. While this is not an instruction manual on prayer movement, nor a historical account of how people prayed orshould pray, one should be encouraged to use his or herentire being to pray.I remember a friend of mine recalling an encounter with astore clerk. The clerk seemed so passionate about his joband his encounters with customers, that my friend left thestore feeling that he had encountered a person whose actionsand interactions alone constituted prayer. This idea is not alien to Jewish theology. At any moment, there is potential for saying a bracha. Certainly we allknow of the Kiddush on Shabbat. Like the prayer overbread, this prayer is an example of how we can take mundaneactions, such as eating and drinking, and attempt toraise them to a higher spiritual level. As we approach the High Holidays, we strive to becomethe best we can. Perhaps one way is to consider that everymoment and interaction--in work, in shul, in family, withfriends and in play--is potential for a prayerful moment, and a way to step closer to the Divine.Alyssa joins me in wishing you and your families a shanatova umetukah.Tashlich 2013/5774High Holyday Greetings to all!
