kunsThaus Graz
Alien presence in Graz, the city of cultural heritage? This emblem of the
new Graz hovers like a gigantic, bluish, shimmering bubble over the right
bank of the River Mur.
The Kunsthaus – endearingly called “Friendly Alien” by its creators Peter
Cook and Colin Fournier – has been attracting visitors since October
2003 with its spectacular architecture and variety of contemporary art
exhibitions.
And not just these aspects. It stands as a symbol of the harmonic interplay
between the old and the new in Graz. After all, it grows out of the
Eisernes Haus (iron house), a building which, in 1848, drew attention as
one of the first cast iron constructions on the continent.
Founded 200 years ago by Archduke Johann, the Universalmuseum
22 nd June – 22 nd July 2012
“Styriarte” has tied the pioneering conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt more
closely to his home city of Graz. Harnoncourt’s artistic skills, which have
made him a star worldwide, became the criterion for the performances
of the festival. So it is that styriarte today enables encounters with lost
perspectives of our musical heritage, reflecting today’s variety of exciting
approaches to old music, to the music between the Middle Ages and the
Romantic period.
