cityinformation From the Mayor Cyclones are an accepted part of life in the North, but we can all prepare for them and lessen their effects. Now is the time to be preparing homes and businesses. Recently I participated in a disaster exercise as the Chair of the Townsville Local Disaster Management Group. The simulation, titled Operation Good Neighbour, was of a serious weather event which provided us with the opportunity to put our disaster plans and procedures to the test. While I hope we don’t face an active cyclone season this year, the threat is always real, and being prepared is the best way to keep our community safe and get back to usual operation quickly. I was also delighted to launch the 2012 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal. Most of you will be familiar with the annual appeal that aims to raise a total of $100,000 for local people needing assistance over the festive season. Please join us for Carols by Candlelight at the new venue of Reid Park on Sunday, 2 December. Rain, hail or shine, the show will go on, thanks to council’s rental of a massive Supertent. The educational DVDs were produced after council identified a gap in the city’s educational material. celebratingourcity Carols under Supertent Rain, hail or shine, Carols by Candlelight will go ahead at Reid Park on Sunday 2 December, thanks to a 10,000-person Supertent hired by council. Previous years have seen Carols cancelled due to seasonal downpours; however, the Supertent is designed to safeguard the annual event from a washout. Townsville Mayor Cr Jenny Hill said the rental Supertent was a major initiative in this year’s city budget. “Wet seasons are an accepted part of life in the North and, for three of the past four years, Carols have been washed out at considerable expense,” Cr Hill said. “This year measures will be in place to protect the event and all its anticipation. “Having the event under a Supertent means that one of our biggest and most loved annual family events will go ahead, despite any possibility of rain.” This year’s Carols will offer a full program of entertainment for all ages. The night will come alive with ARIA Award winning songstress Katie Noonan, along with the finest musical talent from the region. Guests can catch all the entertainment on two big live screens. The event is free of charge and will collect funds for the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Appeal, which raises money and goods for more than 25 charities in Townsville. Free songbooks will be available in the Townsville Bulletin on 1 December or on the night. Safe-flame candles available for $2 at the event with all proceeds going towards the appeal. As this year’s event will be held in Reid Park, a parking map and useful information about preparing for Carols can be found on the back page of this edition of City Update. Come along and enjoy free entertainment, amusement rides for the kids, a variety of food and beverage stalls and of course the big man himself, Santa Claus! New Year’s Eve celebrations What are you doing New Year’s Eve? Join in the countdown and celebrate the start of 2013 at Townsville’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration at Reid Park on Monday 31 December from 7pm. Come along and enjoy a spectacular night of fireworks, live music, food stalls, licensed bar, plus amusement rides at the McDonald’s Sideshow Alley. Entry to the sideshow is via a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Ronald McDonald House. There’ll be plenty on offer for all ages, so bring in the new year with a bang! Celebrations will get underway at Reid Park at 7pm with a line-up of top acts including the Tremadors. A special fireworks display for families with young children will light up the celebrations at 8pm. The city will then see in the new year with other fireworks shows at midnight at Reid Park and Nelly Bay. The New Year’s eve celebrations are proudly brought to you by Townsville City Council.
