Be the change you
wish to see in the
world
By Rabbi Evan Shore
Throughout the long cold winter Syracuse
experienced, many made grandiose plans
for the summer months. Now that the warm
weather has arrived, what are some of your
ideas?
Rabbi Tarfon in Pirkei Avot teaches us: “You
are not required to complete the task, yet you
are not free from withdrawing from it.” It is my
estimation that Rabbi Tarfon was not referring
to summertime projects. Rather, he was
informing us of our communal obligations.
It has been said there are too many leaders but
few followers. Charles Dickens, in 1852 in the
Household Narrative of Current Events, echoed
this same theme. The more the world changes
the more it remains the same.
Nationally, many feel leaders are failing the
masses; the leaders feel the followers are not
pulling their weight. Rabbi Tarfon is teaching
us a profound idea. Finger pointing solves little
and accomplishes nothing. Recently, under the
auspices of the Jewish Federation of Central
New York, along with the local pulpit Rabbis,
I met with the Jewish Young Leadership of
Syracuse. The common denominator at the
crux of all questions and answers was JEWISH
SYRACUSE. How do we grow, build and
strengthen our Jewish community?
Thankfully, we have a portal to channel the
energies of leaders and followers in Syracuse.
The portal is found at 5655 Thompson Road,
our very own JCC. There is a tremendous
amount of work to be done. Some goals will be
met this year while others not for many years.
However, we owe it to ourselves and to our
children not to shirk our duty. After you read
this article, make a phone call to the JCC and
become involved.
Celebrate, honor and remember
To commemorate special occasions —births, birthdays,
graduations, anniversaries, weddings, Bar or Bat Mitzvah,
or to perpetuate the memory of a loved one—the
JCC welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of our many
endowments and special funds. The JCC will send an
acknowledgement card to the individual (or next of kin)
in whose name the contribution was made. Some of our
funds are listed below. For further information, please
