Sorry, we made a mistake Fortunately, not as bad as those guys pictured here. We told you the CCA Journal had 7,000 readers. We were wrong. The last official count placed readership at 8,100. That makes this clean & green digital magazine the most widely read state chiropractic association magazine in the nation! www.CCAjournal.com JS: Well I, almost feel like I’m going to be repeating myself. DB: That would be good then. JS: I think new students need to be open to a variety of viewpoints. I think that they need to really understand conceptually what they’re learning and not just try to remember facts. They’re going to be drawing from that knowledge base when they get into practice. If they’re able to be good problem solvers and excellent critical thinkers they’re going to be outstanding practitioners. So I would say don’t wrap yourself up in a grade! If you’re looking for that A by just memorizing facts through short term memory, I would say concentrate more at understanding the concepts. Participate in small group tutorials and studying with peers, because there’s nothing better than teaching someone else to really understand the material and for retaining the information longer. The more dialogue you have after learning the facts, the greater chance you have at truly understanding the information. Students will be doing a disservice if they go through the educational process trying to memorize data. Our programs are too demanding and very rigorous to just memorize. Understanding concepts and improving problem solving skills are necessary to get the full benefit of the educational experience. DB: Well that is a great concept because that same concept carries over when you’re first starting practicing; maybe masterminding with other colleagues and solving problems together on a different level, or even solving clinical problems together. Also, to learn to work with other people and be a better communicator, you will be better able to help people with their problems. And when you help them they’ll help you, so that is great advice. (See photos, pages 26-29.) The morning session at the Esquire IMAX Theater included briefings from CCA’s governmental affairs team and remarks by Assembly Member Bob Blumenfield, Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee and recipient of CCA’s Legislator of the Year award and the Honorable Edmund G. Brown, Jr., Governor of California. Attendees spent the afternoon at the Capitol meeting with legislators and legislative staff regarding five very important issues: • AB 2109 authored by Assembly Member Richard Pan. Communicable Disease: Immunization Exemption • SB 352 authored by Senator Bob Huff. Chiropractic Act • SB 924 authored by Senators Darrell Steinberg, Curren Price and Mimi Walters. Physical Therapists: Direct Access to Services/Professional Corporations • SB 951 authored by Senator Ed Hernandez and AB 1453 authored by Assembly Member Bill Monning. Senate Bill 924 authored by Senator Curren Price, Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg and Senator Mimi Walters, would permit physical therapists direct access to patients without a diagnosis or referral from a medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or doctor of chiropractic. Allowing physical therapists to treat without a thorough diagnosis puts patients at risk. THANK YOU Sponsors! Additionally, this measure also authorizes only medical corporations and podiatric medical corporations to employ physical therapists; we are troubled that chiropractic corporations are not included in the provision. While we agree this provision is necessary to clarify existing law to allow physical therapists to be employed by medical corporations and podiatric corporations to preserve the employment relationships that currently exist, for over twenty years, chiropractic corporations have been able to employ physical therapists until the authority was inadvertently eliminated in statute through SB 907 by Senator John Burton, which was chaptered in 2003. SB 924 passed out of the Senate without being heard in a policy committee. This measure is currently in the Assembly and will be heard next in the Assembly Business, Professions, and Consumer Protections Committee in June. Act Now! As this measure is moving through the legislative process, we need to educate all assembly members about the danger of this measure.
