With this issue of the Village Voice, we are launching a new monthly column: A quick
look at the life of some of your neighbors. If you know someone who would be interesting to
meet, please contact a member of the Communications Committee.
BOB McCLELLAND: Bob and his wife of 55 years, Joanne, came
to SSV in 2001 by way of Eugene, San Jose and lastly Portland. He was
an industrial engineer before retiring in 1996 after a 50-year career. They
enjoyed fulltime RVing throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico
before settling here. They now like to golf, read and travel. They have three
children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Get to know Bob
and Joanne. They are fun people.
PHIL PLATO: Phil and his wife Ginny (married 49 years) came to
SSV in 2007 and are fulltime residents. Phil was a professor in the Graduate
School of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He has a BS in Civil
Engineering, an MS and PhD in Radiation Protection. He still works full
time doing radiation dose reconstructions and expert witness testimony for
a law firm in New Orleans. He currently, manages Channel 22, our closed
circuit TV programming. Ginny volunteers in the Activities Office. They
miss not having a large enough pond in AZ to use their Sea Ray boat. They used to cruise
around their native Florida and the Caribbean. They have a daughter and grandson in Apache
Junction and a son in Seattle. Introduce yourself to Phil and Ginny. You may learn some
interesting facts not mentioned here.
The Summit at Sunland Springs
A New Memory Care Community in East Mesa
Continuing the Farnsworth Family Tradition of
Excellence in Senior Living
Craig Sr. & Mr. Farnsworth
In 1958, Ross Farnsworth and his
father Joe began developing communities
that were specifically designed to meet
the needs of active adults. Since then,
Farnsworth Development has built
thousands of homes in the east valley and
earned a reputation for quality construction
and outstanding customer service.
In 1980, son-in-law Craig Ahlstrom
joined the family business beginning
the third generation of the Farnsworth
legacy. In 2008, Craig Ahlstrom Jr.
joined the company, representing the
fourth generation to become involved in
senior housing, thus continuing the tradition of excellence that has
been handed down through the years.
In 2011, a new company was formed by the Ahlstroms which
takes the great reputation of the past, adds to it new ideas for the
future, and offers a new housing type to assist seniors needing higher
levels of care as they age--thus the idea for The Summit was born.
The Summit at Sunland Springs is a community for individuals
with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia and memory loss. It
has a purposefully designed environment for residents to promote
maximum independence while maintaining their dignity, privacy
and respect. The Summit represents decades of experience that will
enhance the lives of seniors needing the extra care and concern that
they so richly deserve.
Our private rooms and common areas are welcoming and
easy to navigate. Our life engagement philosophy and our social
activity programs are designed to enhance the daily activities of
living for our residents.
Milestone Retirement Communities was selected to manage
The Summit at Sunland Springs. Milestone is proud to be a part of
the tradition of excellence that has been handed down through four
generations of the Farnsworth/Ahlstrom family.
Located on Signal Butte Road south of Baseline in east
Mesa, The Summit at Sunland Springs is only a short distance
from physicians’ offices, Mountain Vista Medical Center, and other
medical support services, in addition to retail stores and shopping
centers.
Spring Break
This month is Spring Break month for
school children all across the country, and a
few of them find their way to Sunland Springs
Village. Some of the school “children” are
well into their 20’s, but whatever their age,
the residents being visited need to make sure
their guests are following community rules.
Remember that you must accompany
your guests of any age while they are at the
pools, the fitness centers, or the Billiards
Room. However, if you have adult guests
(age 18 or older) staying one or more nights
with you, you may obtain passes at the Activities
Office that allow them to use the facilities
on their own. The passes are $5 per person,
and there is a $15 family rate. The passes are
good for 30 days.
Children’s Hours at the Pools
Children’s hours at the Springwood Pool
are noon to 2:00 PM. Children’s hours at the
San Tan Pool are 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Please
observe the children’s hours rigorously.
Springwood Pool
We gave the Springwood Pool a makeover
just in time for Spring Break. We closed
the pool for five days to paint the deck,
renovate the landscaping, repair the walls
by the spa and clean out the deck drains.
Our maintenance guys and the landscaping
company did a great job. Come and see how
good it looks.
Golf Carts
Every year at this time I get reports of
children, sometimes very young children,
driving grandma’s golf cart on our streets.
This practice is very dangerous even if you
are accompanying your grandchild, and it
freaks everybody else out. Remember, the
streets in Sunland Springs Village belong to
the city. To drive on any city street you must
be a licensed driver and follow the rules of
the road, and your golf cart must be licensed
with the city as well.
Golf Course
Another report I get this time of year is
children, adults and pets playing on the golf
course. For insurance reasons, only registered
golfers are allowed on the golf course. So
invite your guests to sign up for a round of
golf, but otherwise they have to stay off the
course. Be sure they check in at the Pro Shop
before playing.
For more information on all of these events check out the flyers on page 8 and 9.
Be Sociable For Security
By Ed Leahy Chairman, SSV Security Committee
On Wednesday, March 13, at 6:00 PM
in the SSV Auditorium, you can enjoy some
free Ice Cream and learn how to keep your
home more secure in the bargain. To get
your free ice cream you will need to get a
ticket like this at the Activities Office. They
will be available until Monday, March 11:
SAMPLE
Put your name on the back when it is
redeemed and you’ll be included in a drawing
for prizes donated by our exhibitors. Ice
Cream coupons will be limited to 300.
Vendors of home security products will
display their wares.
The list of exhibitors includes a variety
of home security suppliers. Foresight, who
installs alarm wiring and security systems for
Farnsworth. Lowe’s Home Improvement and
Home Depot will display a range of home
security products. First Impressions, who
installs security doors for Farnsworth, will
feature their doors. Lincoln Garage Doors
will discuss their doors and accessories. Cox
Cable will demo its Cox Home Security,
“Home Protection Life Connection.” All exhibitors
will contribute prizes to be awarded
to lucky members of the audience. Last but
not least, Farnsworth Development will bring
prizes to be awarded in our drawing.
The Mesa Police will talk about their practices
in our area.
The police cannot sit outside everyone’s
home and prevent break-ins. Neither can our
private Security Company, so when it comes
to making your home more secure--security
begins at home.
To make the most of that idea at SSV, we
participate in the Mesa Police Neighborhood
Watch Program. It is a simple, but effective
way to help keep our community safe. Our
program is based on the age old fashioned
idea of neighbors looking out for each other.
Most importantly, what it requires of each
of us is simple--getting to get to know our
neighbors and, we can do that while we enjoy
ourselves at a neighborhood party.
If you are a winter visitor, you have a
special reason to belong to a block watch as
you leave your home for months at a time
in summer. If you are a winter visitor with
e-mail, you can stay tuned to what is going
on in your neighborhood wherever you are.
Generally, with e-mail any coordination
needed can be done on the internet.
Your home is a sizable investment so it is
in your interest to protect it.
Ever since we have organized Neighborhood
Watch Groups at SSV, we are a low
crime area. That is the good news. The bad
news is the minute we take that as a signal to
let down our guard, that is the time we make
ourselves vulnerable. The fact that little or
nothing untoward is happening at SSV is a
sign our vigilance is working.
Be Sociable for Security.
To keep your home and SSV more secure
does not have to be like flossing your
teeth or eating your spinach. It can be as
easy as coming to a neighborhood party-
-or a free Ice Cream Social to learn how to
protect what you own.

year, making a total of 432 players playing in
seven levels of ability. This is our first year of
having our very own team in the 4+ level (the
TOP level), Jennifer Wittick and John Berger.
There will be plenty of FOOD available
for sale at both the Snack Shack by the
north courts and at the Courtside Café at the
auditorium. Dale Miller’s famous Breakfast
Burritos and a complete pancake breakfast
league guidelines and rules. New member
handouts are also given to those joining our
league for the first time.
January and February socials included a
variety of delicious menu ideas such as: baked
potatoes with trimmings, hot turkey sandwiches,
taco salads, chicken wings, pizzas,
Chinese food, and baked ham with a potluck.
It takes much appreciated volunteer help to
host the socials. The extensive involvement
of our members, whether in game directing
or setting/cleaning up, helps to make this club
as successful and desirable as it is.
Our club is happy to boast about our holein-one
winners. This season we congratulate
Joan Boyd (November 2), Trudy Ramer
(November 9), Loren Lorenzen (December
21) and Bill Motl (this past summer) on their
achievement. Club members were treated
to wine at our socials, compliments of the
winners.
Good luck to all the tournament competitors!
be announced and be given their prizes at the
end of the month.
In March, we play our Club Championship
over three rounds starting the March
13. The championships will be contested by
flights according to handicap, and there will
be a low gross championship trophy. The
awards will be presented at our annual dinner
and Club meeting on March 27. We will
also conduct our annual election of officers
at the meeting.
will be available during the morning hours
of 8:00 to -10:00. From 11:30 AM to 1:30
PM we will once again be serving our delicious
one-third pound hamburgers, hot dogs,
sandwiches, salads and more available at the
Courtside Café. Six dollars will get you an
entree, bag of chips, cookie and drink. All
proceeds go to support the SSV Tennis Club
and to help purchase needed equipment such
as shade screens, tables, tennis balls, etc.
Please stop by this week to watch some
good tennis and eat fabulous food. Parking
will be at a premium so we ask that you ride
your bike, walk, carpool, or bring your golf
cart.
OK! OK! OK! Enough of this cold, cold
weather!! Enough of six layers of clothing
and frost delays!! Hurry up Spring!!
I had hoped to have the results of the
“Rally for the Cure” to include in this newsletter,
however, Mother Nature has not cooperated
and the tournament was cancelled due to
the cold weather and frost delays as mentioned
above. The tournament was postponed until
February 19 , and hopefully, the weather will
allow us out on the golf course.
Good News! We have arranged to have
an outside game at the Augusta Ranch Golf
Course on Wednesday, April 17, 2013. We
haven’t worked out all the details to date so
keep watch for further information posted in
the Golf Shack, and, of course, next month’s
newsletter will contain all the facts
President’s Cup tournament is on March
5 and 12 with the banquet on Thursday, March
14, 2013. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the
Golf Shack so be sure to sign up for this event.
Lots of prizes to give away and the weather
in March should be much more conducive
for playing golf!
As some of you will be heading home
the end of March – be safe – and have a terrific
summer!
Wow Is All We Can
Say!
Our Hamburger Feast
fundraiser was a huge success
thanks to the wonderful
residents of Sunland
Springs Village. We are so
appreciative of your continued support of the
Sunland Springs Village Softball Club. You
are the BEST!
As the softball season comes to an end,
we saw a season full of fun and just a few
minor injuries. There were many new players,
who discovered they could still play ball in
their retirement years. We always welcome
new players.
If you are interested in playing next season
and would like to be contacted in the fall,
you can call Patti Finney, 480-861-4513, for
the ladies team, or for the men’s teams call
Dick Paulin, 480-986-7600. We welcome all
experience levels.
Once again, we say THANK YOU for
supporting the Sunland Springs Village Softball
Low Impact
Aerobics
Rita Vautrin
Why Women need resistance training:
SSV’s Low Impact Aerobics class emphasizes
not only cardio training, but also
resistance training. Join us Tuesday, Thursday
and Saturday morning from 7:30-8:30 AM
in the Auditorium to strengthen your heart,
muscles and bones.
Resistance training is the unglamorous
side of exercising, but it is as important has
cardio training. The two biggest reasons
are weight management and increased bone
density. Studies have shown that if women
strength trains two or three times a week for
eight weeks, she will gain 1.75 lbs. of muscle
and lose 3.5 lbs. of fat.
The other advantage of an increased
muscle mass is that one-pound of muscle
burns 35-50 more calories than one pound of
fat. As a tool against osteoporosis, strength
training can increase spinal bone mineral
density by 13% in six months. In addition,
as you get stronger with strength training, you
feel younger and have more confidence; as
you can still perform tasks that were so easy
several years ago. Strength training has more
benefit for the same time spend exercising. If
you have any questions, call me at 634-4784.
Pool Room on the
bulletin board.
On Friday, March 29, there will be a
potluck for the people who play pool on Friday
evenings. See Barb Harvey for details.
Friday night all-comers pool has become
quite popular. Some players had to be turned
away because there were no spots left. We
only have eight tables with a maximum of
four players each, so simple math tells us that
there were more than 32 players that wanted
to play what I like to call the “Chinese Fire
Drill” games. Get there early to nail down a
place at the tables.
Dan Olenik, president of the Club, has
been working with the HOA to get the heating
and cooling in the room to a desirable
temperature for all. Hopefully, you have been
comfortable in there lately.
6 March 2013 Sunland Springs Village Voice
Sunland Springs Village Master HOA Meeting
SSV Auditorium January 22, 2013
Jeff Decker-Vice President of the HOA and Farnsworth Development
John Lippert- HOA Manager
The meeting began at 9:50 A.M. following the Tuesday HOA Coffee.
John Lippert reminded everyone that the Townhome meeting would
be held immediately following the Master meeting.
John began with an overview of the December 2012 and preliminary
Year-end Financial results which he had distributed.
The $880,955 in Total Operating Funds is mostly 2013 Assessment
funds.
The $52,505 Maintenance fee credit is from 2013 assessments collected
in 2013. The $52,505 and the $880,955 will be included as
Income in the January 2013 financials.
The Builder Subsidy from Farnsworth for 2012 was $10,100.
The administrative expense is higher than budgeted because of an
additional Administrative Assistant in 2012.
Utilities are up because of the additional irrigation and management
expense from the addition of the Guadalupe & Springwood landscape.
Propane costs were down because of reduced prices.
Cable expense was up because of a fee increase from Cox.
Landscaping expense was down because of less than expected storm
damage.
The General Reserve Transfers and Transfer Fees were up because
of the improved housing market with increased resales of homes and
new home purchases. The HOA received $585 for every resale and
new home purchase.
There was a question about the funding amount of the Reserve Fund
monies, John said the SSV Reserve fund has 98% coverage. A guideline
in the industry ranks 70% or better as good. Our 98% is considered
excellent. An update to the Reserve Study will be performed in April
2013 and will include the new SanTan Center properties. It was suggested
that in the future the Prepaid Maintenace Fee (Such as the 2013
prepaid $880,955) be classified as a separate line item for clarification.
Manager Report:
There was an issue with the new SanTan pool not maintaining the
proper heat level. The original propane flow system was too small.
Two additional auxiliary tanks have been added to increase the gas
flow. The pool maintained an 85-86 degree temperature during the
recent cold spell. Farnsworth will continue to work with the installation
contractor to develop a permanent fix and proper configuration.
The Activity Center Courtyard sunscreen is being replaced after 7 years
with a better quality material that is guaranteed for 12 years.
There was a walk through with Farnsworth at the SanTan Complex.
John, Jeff, Activity Director Janet West and the SSVHOA maintenance
staff participated. There was a punch list of 26 items prepared. Not all
of the items were construction suggestions but also included several
management suggestions. Farnsworth is working on their portion and
the HOA is addressing the rest.
Bingo contributed $1,100 for the enhanced pool signage at the SanTan
and Springwood Centers. The signage includes the updated hours for
children at the pools.
The original landscape installer for Guadalupe had a 2 month warranty
on their work. The area was reviewed by an HOA group and a list of
8 items for correction was addressed. The list included the amount of
granite applied, dead plants and trimming. After correction, the area
was then turned over to the HOA. This new property will result in an
increase in the regular budgeted Landscape expense.
The Annual Club Representative meeting for the 2013-2014 season
will be held on the first Wednesday in February. This meeting will
include sign-up instructions for the various meeting rooms. At least
one member from each SSV club or group should attend.
Resident Jim Palfini and the Computer Club are working on improvements
to the SanTan room WIFI system. $672 should cover the
cost of the parts, with the Computer Club donating $200, the Village
Enhancement fund $472 and Jim Palfini his labor.
There was a surprise visit from the Maricopa County Health Dept.
They requested that the ash trays be moved to 20 feet from the buildings
and that NO SMOKING signs be installed at all entry points at
the Auditorium. Their concerns have been addressed.
Questions:
A resident presented the following items: a) Can someone address
the problem with the south gate at the Springwood gate? The door
slams back open. b) The bottom surface around the spa looks like
mold or something. c) The towel dispenser at the Fitness Center is
very difficult to use. d) Finally, it would be nice if there was a sauna at
the Fitness Center. John responded that he would look into the items
reported but there is a question of the practicality of installing a Sauna
in a desert climate.
Can something be done with the windows at the new center to reduce
the glare? John said that the Recreation/Facility committee is already
getting bids and that the work should be done in the next month or two.
Is Guadalupe a city street? Yes, but the HOA is responsible for the
landscaping. Jeff explained that all major city streets are the responsibility
of the developer and that the responsibility is turned over to the
HOA as the area is built out.
Jeff Decker Report:
SSV had 111 sales last year compared to 54 in 2011. Over 2013 units
are closed. 44 units are currently under construction and about 3 are
being started each week. There hasn’t been this much activity in 4-5
years. Jeff thanked everyone for their repeat and referral business.
The Annual Farnsworth BBQ is Wednesday March 6, 2013 at the
ProShop. Everyone is invited to pick-up their tickets at the Sales Office.
The 2 nd Phase of the Townhomes is under way. The Memory Care
Center is ready to go pending the state license.
Additional Questions:
Are there any spec homes? Jeff said Farnsworth tries to keep 6-8
available, but they were all sold last year. One is completed now
with 3-4 being worked on and there is hope there will be 6-8 after
this summer. Currently, there are 11 spec Townhomes and 9-10 Golf
Condos as specs.
How many homes will there be when finished? There will be about
2800 all together at full build out. This number may vary depending
on the development in the 2 corner areas of the Village. Condos are
currently being considered for the Southwest and Southeast corners,
but if the market changes and houses are in higher demand the final
build out number will be adjusted.
When will Meridian be finished? We are not aware of any decisions
on its completion. Five governmental entities need to agree; Pinal
County, Maricopa County, Apache Junction, Mesa and Arizona’s
Department of Transportation.
Will there be an entrance to Signal Butte from the Southwest or
Southeast areas when they are developed? That decision won’t be
made until the final design plans are developed.
There being no further questions or comments, the meeting was
adjourned at 10:20 A.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Village Playhouse
By Monica Rae Stein
Another sell-out crowd, another fantastic show! Audience members were greeted
at the doors and rushed to find seats, while a gallery of photos played on the big screens
around the auditorium, courtesy of Jane Harrel. What was all the fuss about? None other
than the Village Playhouse Production of “On the Street Where You Live.”
Guests enjoyed a huge piece of apple pie with whipped cream, along with coffee
while they waited anxiously for the show to begin. The lights dimmed, and music
filled the air as Mary Williams played our title song. Ivan Stein appeared on stage with
microphone in hand to sing our version of the song aptly named “In the Springs Where
I Live,” which got the audience in the mood for lots of laughs surrounding the various
happenings in and around SSV. The show consisted of 14 scenes each geared around an
activity or event in our community. Besides Ivan, singers were musical director Mary
Williams, who sang an updated version of “My Favorite Things,” and Dan Radeka, who
sang about ailments in “Are You Lonesome Tonight.”
Performers lending their talent on stage included: Bill Shea, Judy Herr, Linda Granquist,
Linda McAteer, Roberta Feyereisen, John McAteer, Dan Radeka, Don O’Reilly,
Ann Schubert, Kathy Mitchell, Robert Klein, Judi Ofelt and Jane Harrel. Director
Monica Rae Stein, thanked the behind-the-scenes crew – Dale and Martha Hawkins,
Elmer Schaufelberger, Ivan Stein, Dave and Belle Myers, Richard and Helen Denney,
and Dan and Connie Radeka. The cast took their curtain call bows and made their way
to the lobby as the audience took their song sheets and joined Mary, Monica and Ivan
singing “In the Springs Where I Live.”
Cooks Corner
Featuring John Martin
By: Jackie Muller
When John Martin graduated
from Iowa State University,
he began his career
in the construction industry.
He was too busy building
schools, hospitals, etc., to
enjoy his interest of checking
out historical tales. However,
now that he is retired and in
Arizona, he enjoys following
up on stories of the Lost
Dutchman and many other
intriguing tales that are in
abundance.
Although John is from
Iowa, he willingly shared the
recipe for this Wisconsin soup
with me. I tried it at one of
the great buffet meals the Sun
Duffer golfers have and found
it irresistible. I hope you will also. This recipe is rich and
creamy and perfect for cold winter nights. But don’t wait for
cold weather in Arizona -- go ahead and serve it now.
WISCONSIN BEER CHEESE SOUP
12 oz Amber Bock beer
8 slices bacon
½ C onions diced
½ C carrots diced
½ C celery diced
¼ C sweet red pepper chopped
10 ½ oz can condensed chicken broth
¼ C flour
1 C half and half
2 C cheddar cheese
1 T sugar
salt and pepper
Open beer and let stand while chopping veggies. Sauté
bacon until crisp, then drain and crumble. In large kettle sauté
veggies until soft in 2 T bacon grease. Add chicken broth.
Fill chicken can with beer and add to mixture. Bring mixture
to boil and reduce heat to low. Pour remaining beer in small
bowl, add flour and whisk. Gradually add flour mixture to
broth. When thickened, add bacon crumbles, reserving a small
amount for garnish. Add cheese and heat until it melts. Add
sugar, salt and pepper to taste,
Saturday Bunko
By Joe Fusaro
We had a record crowd of 21 people. I guess the cold
weather in January did not stop people who wanted to have
a good time and play Bunko. We meet at 2:15 PM in the
Majestic Card room on the second Saturday of every month,
even in the summer.
Our players in January were Ada and Warren Wright,
Agnes O’Byrne, Anna Neumuller, Carol Mc Naughton, Darrell
and Eva Fitzwater, Dorothy Silbernagel, Ethel Grosse,
George and Lynda White, George and Midge Perry, Helen
Oyloe, Irene Olive, Judi Workin, Julia Houck, Linda Sigman,
Karen Frazer, Joe and Linda Fusaro.
Bunko is played with dice and is a very simple game to
learn. We collect $3.00 to be distributed for the seven winning
categories.
At the end of Bunko, we also play a game for $1.00 called
“Left Center Right.” There are two winners in this game. We
are usually finished by 4:30 PM.
For more information or for a copy of the playing rules
for either game, contact me, Joe Fusaro by email at FNC@
show and a silent auction. We have gathered some neat items,
so please come prepared to participate in purchasing a treasure.
On the day of the luncheon, anyone is welcome to donate
item(s) for the center, and almost any household item is welcome.
They will be given to the women in need. Arrangements
will be made for larger items to be picked up.
By: Jane E. Harrel, President
We were a month
late with our election
of officers, but it really
didn’t matter. Dick
Simmon made a motion
that the same slate
of officers retain their
positions for one more
year. Well…. That was
fine except for our Secretary, Carlyn Block.
She could not run because of personal reasons.
Our officers for the 2013-2014 Season are:
Jane Harrel President
Pat Miller Vice President, Programs
Allen Schaeffer Vice President, Operations
Rose Seminoe Secretary
Phil Kalfus Treasurer
Thank you fellow officers for the fine job
you will continue to do. We really appreciate
your skills and abilities.
Our programs for March will be:
March 6: Business Meeting (Small Discussion
Groups, if time allows)
March 13 TBA
March 20 Photo Management – Jim Palfini
March 27 GPS Devices – Don Cook
We still have classes scheduled for this
month, the most important of which is the
Windows 8 Class to be demonstrated by Jerry
Rogan on March 5 at 1:00 PM. The number
of students will not be limited as we have
scheduled the San Tan rooms for this session.
Bring your laptops and work along with Jerry
as he shows you how to operate with Windows
8. If you were one of the lucky ones to have
attended his classes earlier this year, you
may also come to this session at no charge.
Otherwise, Club members will pay $5.00.
We also invite other SSV residents to come
for a modest fee of $10. Call Jane Harrel at
241-4264 for more information.
The Computer Club meets weekly
through April each year at the San Tan rooms
on Wednesday at 10:00 AM. From May
through September we will meet in the Superstition
Room at the same time but only on
the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
Come on down and join us.
Karoke Club News
By: Doris Hevelka and Judy Allen
Karaoke Club is
growing fast and having
lots of fun with new
equipment in the beautiful
San Tan facility. February
1 we had a record
number of members and
guests join us at the Karaoke
Party Night for
music, food and laughter.
The following Sunday was the (soon
to be traditional) Super Bowl Party. A large
crowd enjoyed plenty of “football fare” and
enjoyed great views of the game on the big
screen and TVs. Even the “blackout” seemed
to be planned so friends and neighbors could
visit. This free event is the Karaoke Club’s
way of saying “Thank You” to the Village
residents for your continued support of our
Club and events. Mark your calendar for
February 2, 2014, and the next Super Bowl
Party. May your team win!
The Karaoke Club Oldies Dance
was sold out days before the event. The
music was reminiscent of our younger days
and the dance floor was packed all night!
Still Cruisin’ played everything from The
Beach Boys to Motown, and even a polka.
The crowd would not let the band go home
The Sunland Springs Vagabonds had
a wonderful time on their South America
Cruise in January. We were blessed with good
weather and calm seas. Some were lucky
enough to see a sea lion birth on a rocky island
in the Beagle Channel.
On March 30 we will be sailing the
California Coast for 7-nights and on April 27
we travel to Italy for a 13-night tour. Space
is extremely limited on these trips but call if
you are interested.
Our Alaska cruise and tour on July 7 is
sold out but we can get other dates if you
would like the same trip. Space is still available
on a 7-night cruise to Alaska round trip
from Seattle on August 3. The Galapagos
cruise on November 8 is also sold out.
On April 1, 2014, we will sail roundtrip
from Los Angeles to Hawaii, Tahiti and
Samoa on the Golden Princess. Learn to
do the hula, snorkel in the beautiful waters
of Tahiti, enjoy the culture of Samoa or just
relax onboard and enjoy the many things the
Golden Princess has to offer. We will take a
motorcoach to Los Angeles if we have enough
passengers. This is always a big selling cruise
so book early to guarantee your space.
We have two cruises planned with Azamara
Club Cruises on the Azamara Journey.
The first is June 14, 2014, from Hamburg to
Copenhagen. The cruise follows the Norwegian
Coast all the way to the Arctic Circle and
the North Cape. Visit many small towns and
villages in Norway and enjoy the fantastic
scenery along the coast. Then on June 28 sail
from Copenhagen to Stockholm to the Baltic
Sea and Russia. Visit Germany, Denmark,
Poland, Estonia, Russia, Finland and Sweden
on this wonderful cruise. Or, book both of
these back to back cruises for an exciting
voyage in Northern Europe. Azamara Club
Cruises includes an evening event ashore, all
drinks (both soft and alcohol), gratuities, self
service laundry and shuttle service from the
ports. The ship only holds 670 passengers
and will sell out quickly.
until they had played an extra set. Thanks
so much to all the members who helped with
the set-up and clean-up. Special thanks to
everyone who attended for making this such
a fun dance. The 50/50 winner took home a
whopping $200!
Get your tickets now for the March 9 Variety
Show, “Mental Release”. Outstanding
Village talent will be showcased. It promises
to be a great time.
Plan to join us at Karaoke Party night at
7:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month in
the San Tan Center. You do not have to sing,
but come along and you will leave smiling.
Bring a snack to share, if you like, and your
own beverage.
Village Resident: “The sign on the restaurant
door says,
‘FRIDAY NIGHT KARAOKE.’”
Resident’s Wife: “Let’s go! But what kind
of fish IS that?”
On Friday, April 5, the Book Club will
be discussing Shanghai Girls by Lisa See.
This novel tells the story of two well-educated
sisters, Pearl and May, who have grown up
in comfort in Shanghai in the 1930’s. When
their father loses his fortune and sells his
daughters to a wealthy Chinese-American as
brides for his sons, the girls refuse to go to
America. They are forced to reconsider when
Japanese bombs destroy the city and their
parents disappear.
The girls arrive at Ellis Island and are
detained and humiliated for months before
they meet their intended husbands. They learn
to forget their former rivalry and rely on each
other as they face the challenges of their new
life, taking what comfort they can from their
former customs and culture.
This will be our last meeting until November.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged
to share insights and opinions as well as
suggestions for future selections.
When: First Friday of each month November
- April
SSV Writers
Club
By: Nan Miller
If you like to
see your words on
paper or computer,
talent level does
not matter, you
will want to check
out the SSV Writers
Club. This very
friendly support
group of a dozen
writers meets on the
first and third Thursdays
of each month
in the Summit Card Room from 10 AM to
noon. In March, our sessions are the 7 and 21.
The SSV Writers Club ranges from
novices to those who have published books.
Some enjoy composing nonfiction while others
concentrate on fiction. Anyone who has
an interest in writing or wants to improve
their craft is always welcome. Emphasis is on
writing not business. We continue to charge
no fees or dues.
We decide each time on a brief exercise
to compose between sessions. At the meetings,
we share our words. Those who prefer
to bring a piece they are working on are
welcome to do so. Those seeking critiques
should bring copies of their work so they can
receive written comments of others.
Nan Miller, a professional travel writer, is
coordinator. For questions, if you would like
to learn what the present assignment is, or if
you would like to attend our group, call her
at (480) 984-1852. We hope to see you there.
Sam Thomasson, father and engineer, promised his hearing impaired daughter Kate
Kate had a number of problems with her
expensive, regular technology hearing aids.
Even though they cost thousands of dollars,
they still didn’t help her hear well in a noisy
environment. Kate needed an aid that would
reduce the background noise while enhancing
the volume. Sam developed two technologies,
one that can tell the difference from a human
sound and other sounds, like wind and tires, and
This made a huge impact on Kate’s life. To Sam’s
dismay, Kate went on a date. She came home very
excited, not about the boy, but because when the
boy asked her what the waitress had said, she
was able to tell him. Sam was so thankful that he
could give this to her.
