Ross Farnsworth
1922 - 2013
By Gary Nelson The Arizona Republic | azcentral.com Tue Mar
5, 2013 (Abridged by Jane Harrel)
Ross Farnsworth, a pioneer among the developers
and philanthropists who spearheaded
the Valley’s postwar economic boom, has died.
He was 81. Farnsworth, who was deeply embedded
in Mesa’s religious, business, political
and social life, had been in declining health
for some time. Most of his 12 children were
present when he died on Saturday afternoon.
Farnsworth made a fortune as a land developer
and in other business ventures and gave
large chunks of it to charities too numerous
to count. He was among the founders of the
west Mesa La Mesita Family Shelter, which is
now building a multimillion-dollar apartment
complex for working families. He was a key
backer of the Mesa Arts Center, which named
one of its four theaters after his wife, Anita.
Farnsworth was born in Mesa and began
his company, Farnsworth Development, with
his father, Joseph, in the late 1950s. “My father
and I started the company when I was 27
years old,” Farnsworth said in a 1988 Phoenix
Gazette interview. “He had bought close to
200 acres. I was teaching government in high
school at the time. Youngtown had just started
up, and we thought it would be a good thing to
put something like that out here because this is
the prettier end of the Valley.” That led to the
launch of Dreamland Villa, which in 15 years
ballooned to 3,000 homes at University Drive
and Recker Road. Sunland Villa, Sunland
Village, Sunland Village East and Sunland
Springs Village, all in Mesa, eventually joined
his inventory.
Farnsworth served on the board of nearly
every organization that had anything to do
with making Mesa a better community. He
was certainly one of the strongest and longest
supporters of Mesa United Way. He will be
deeply missed, but he has trained his family,
his friends and neighbors and, I think, in a very
real way, the entire community to continue the
vision and the love that he had expressed over
many years for Mesa.”
Farnsworth is survived by his wife, 12
children, 63 grandchildren and 65 greatgrandchildren.
JOE TAYLOR:
Joe and his wife, Rose,
came to SSV in 1999
from Los Alamos, NM.
They never lived anywhere
else. After WWII
submarine service, his
career path took him
through metallurgy working at the Los Alamos
National Laboratory. He was very active
with all sorts of hobbies, being an official in
football and baseball up to the small college
level, as well as fast pitch softball. Now he
likes to paint with watercolors and garden.
The Taylors have been married 61 years,
have four children, nine grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. He says his greatest
achievement is being alive at 87. Well….
here’s to another 20 Joe. You deserve it.
Springs Village HOA/Activity Office
Have you purchased a resale home in
Sunland Springs Village? If so, welcome to
our community! We trust you will enjoy all
the events and activities that SSV has to offer.
In order to better serve you, we ask that
you stop in at the HOA/Activity Office and
complete a “Resale Packet.” The information
you provide allows the HOA to update
the records on the home you purchased.
The Resale Packet contains the following:
1. A form to transfer the key card numbers to
your name so if a card is lost and returned
to the Office, we can call and return it to
you without the cost of replacement.
Committees and Volunteers
In the February Village Voice I reported that the terms of office of several of the members of
the committees that run the HOA were ending in March. I put out a call for volunteers to fill the
openings, and, as always, you came forward.
We have seven committees plus an Advisory Committee made up of the chairpersons of
each of the other committees plus a member or two at large, and Jeff Decker, Vice President of
the official Board of Directors of the Sunland Springs Village HOA. Although Farnsworth has
ultimate responsibility for the HOA, this committee system is responsible for making almost all
decisions about the community, and it has been in place since 2003. It was successful from the
beginning, and it continues to be as every year new people volunteer to serve, new residents and
long time residents alike.
The 2013 Committees and their members are listed below. The Chairperson is designated by
a C, the Vice Chairperson, if any, by a V, and the Recording Secretary, if any, by an R.
Many thanks to all these committee members. They are a great group to work with.
We still have openings on some of the committees and openings can arise at any time on all
the committees. If you think you might be interested in joining a committee, come to the office
and pick up a committee packet. It describes each of the committees and includes an application
form. Being a committee member is a great way to get involved with your community.
San Tan Fitness Center
Floor exercises are an important part of any exercise program, but, for some of us, getting all
the way down to the floor can be a challenge. The problem was solved long ago by an exercise
bench at the Springwood fitness center, and now we have a beautiful new exercise bench at the San
Tan fitness center thanks to some skilled homeowners. Pete Crocenzi built the bench, and, like all
of Pete’s work, it looks great. Pat Hennessey fashioned the cushion from high quality materials,
and it looks great too. Come on down and try it out.
Attention SSV Homeowners
As you look forward to sprucing up the
outside of your home and yard, please be
advised of the following:
PAINTING: Repainting homes, fences
and walls requires Architecture Committee
approval even if you are repainting the same
color. A list of approved colors is available
in the Activities Office. If you choose a color
not on the list, you must submit a color sample
with your Architectural Change Request.
SATELLITE DISHES: The installation
of a satellite dish is pre-approved provided it
is not attached to the front slope of the roof or
the front half of the house and is in accordance
with FFC rules.
HOLIDAY DECORATIONS: All Christmas
decoration, including lights, shall not be
placed in the front yard or attached to a home
until Thanksgiving, and shall be removed by
January 15 of the succeeding year. All other
holiday and special event decorations may
be displayed for a period up to fourteen (14)
consecutive days.
ROOFING: Architectural approval is
required when it becomes necessary to reroof
your home. A sample of the new roofing
material needs to be included with your
Architectural Change Request.
OTHER CHANGES: Please refer to the
ARCHITECTURAL CONTROL POLICY
MANUAL. You may access these on line at
SSVHOA.com under the HOA tab.
As a reminder, any and all major changes
you wish to make to the appearance of your
home or yard needs Architectural approval.
Please do not begin a project that requires approval
until you have submitted your request
and received approval. It is the homeowner’s
responsibility to see that an Architectural
Change form has been submitted and not the
contractor’s.
Thank you for your continued support
Ride Along With Mesa Police
By: Jane E. Harrel
As a Block Watch coordinator, I was invited
by Sgt. Doane of the Superstition Mesa
Police Department to accompany a police
officer on his rounds for a day. I chose Saturday,
February 2, during the afternoon shift,
and rode along with Officer Isaac Brenaman,
an eight-year veteran with the Mesa force.
The shift started in the briefing room,
somewhat like you see on TV but still very
interesting when we were shown mug shots
of real criminals. It was a very pleasant day
for cruising around East Mesa helping other
officers as needed. Rarely do the police go to
a call by themselves. There is always another
car called for back up. The only time this
did not happen during our shift was when a
dumpster diver was spotted behind the stores
on Main Street and Signal Butte.
It was just about time for my turn in the
navigator’s seat to end when we responded to
a back up call for shoplifters apprehended at
a big retail grocery store. A man and woman
had been stopped by the store personnel who
called the police. They were handcuffed and
sitting apart in the security office of the store.
The initial responding officer was in the back
reviewing the security tapes while Officer
Brenaman asked questions of the “perps.” He
knew the man as he had arrested him before.
After watching the searching of both parties, it
was time to take them to the City Jail. So off
we go with the guy in the back seat encased
in a Plexiglas portion of the seat behind the
passenger side, (the woman was taken by the
other officer). The jail is north of Hwy. 60
on Alma School Road somewhere. There are
no signs that point you to it—you just have
to know where it is by the old court house.
But that’s another story….

Mixed Couples 18 Hole Golf
League
By: Iris and Del Huchulak
The Mixed Couples Golf League is proud
to announce the “SSV Golf Club Emergency
Plan” under the leadership of Eldon Junkermeier
and the “Greens Committee.” The fire
department was consulted and has updated
their GPS system to include all three golf
courses by name and hole number. This will
allow EMTs to find golfers and others on the
course. The plan has been distributed to all
golf league members. Please read the article
also in this issue that outlines the plan in its
entirety.
Due to the weather, the Mixed Couples
Golf League tournament became a one day
event. Thank you to John and Myra Davis
and their committee for all the work done
to make the tournament a success. We hope
everyone had a good game, a good time and
great camaraderie. The list of tournament
winners is posted in the golf shack. Congratulations
to all!
Thank you to Bill Fennell for being the
highest bidder on the watch set donated by
Larry and Susan Wood. Bill designated the
“Rally for Life” as his charity of choice for
the $310 donation.
Ladies 18 Hole Golf League
By: Barbara Shaw
My Goodness!! Here we are at the end
of the 2012-2013 Ladies 18 Hole Golf season!
It has been a great season – well, somewhat –
cold, cold weather and frost delays cut deep!
Our big extra special event this season
was our “Rally for the Cure” tournament
held on February 19. It was scheduled for
the February 12, but that cold, cold weather
delayed us for a week! The contest for the
Rally players was a closest to the pin on No.
5 San Tan. Those ladies who drove the green
received a free ball!! Lois Ferguson won the
big prize for the closest to the pin with Marj
Eisinger coming in a close second. Everyone
had a great time and hopefully this will become
a tradition for the ladies.
Our President’s Cup tournament was held
on March 5 and 12, and our annual meeting
and banquet on March 14. Results from the
All the Sunland Springs Village Softball
teams have said good bye to the 2012/2013
season. It was a season with just a few minor
injuries and provided lots of fun and exercise
for all the players.
If you would like to be contacted next
year to play on one of the Sunland Springs
Village teams, call Patti Finney at 480-861-
480-986-7600 for the men’s teams. All experience
levels are welcome.
Are you unable to play ball but still
By: Virginia Lindsey
fun, so come on and play bocce ball with us.
We will teach anyone who wants to play and
it is easy to learn. Meet new friends while
enjoying the game. We play on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00 AM and
2:00 PM and on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
Bocce ball continues throughout the summer
with evening play at 7:00pm starting in
May. We are a growing club and invite anyone
We also thank the dance committee for
their work getting tickets and flyers printed
and handed out and for assisting with the
dance hosting as well. We hope a good time
was had by all. You can get your dancing
shoes all shined up for next March as Myron
Summerfield and his band will return once
again.
Along with the “Sunland Springs Village
Mixed Couples League” handout, the
Community Directory was also handed out
in March
This month, members feasted on smoked
chops, salmon, Kentucky fried chicken, fried
fish, Italian food, soups and salads, and, of
course, the wonderful catered tournament
banquet consisting of crab-stuffed salmon
and prime rib. A lovely end to the winter
golf season! We are reminded that these enjoyable
meals take place because each week
16 different members volunteer to work the
committees Kudos to all!
Congratulations to the newly elected
Board of Directors, who will commence their
term the first of May.
tournament will be posted in the golf shack
as well as announced in the May newsletter.
We ran into some conflicts with working
out the specifics for our outing at Augusta
Ranch. After a lot of effort put forth by our
President Marcy, the board elected to cancel
this golf outing. We will schedule another
outing in the fall, however, NOT at Augusta
Ranch!
This has really been a fun year for me
working with the Ladies 18 Hole Golf board.
Very enlightening, and I hope to bring a little
more experience to my role as your 2013-2014
President lady.
As this is my last issue of the newsletter,
I wish you all a safe journey to your summer
homes and look forward to your return in
the fall.
See you on the links!
want to be part of the Softball Club? We
Starting the first Saturday morning of
April there will be open practice for all residents
of Sunland Springs Village. Come out
and enjoy some fun and exercise. Times will
be determined based on the weather.
Three teams represent SSV in District IV
“out of park” leagues. The three leagues are
the Superstition, Eagles, and Scorpion. The
league play is over and the Scorpion team took
first in their league. They represented SSV
in the District IV playoffs and took second
place. The Superstition Sunrise RV Resort
team of the Cougar League took first place.
Members on the Scorpion team are Harold
and Jo Rayborn, LeRoy and Renee Storley,
Larry and Judy Johnson, Ron Swabolski,
Sharon Grabeal , Leon Travers and Bob Newberger.
Congratulations on a fine job!!! The
Superstition and Eagles teams did not fair as
well as they both ended up in fifth place (out
of 6 teams).
Despite cold and windy weather “The
Battle of the Sexes” tournament was well
attended on February 9. Once again the men
were victorious over the women by a SLIM
margin of 11 – 9. The gals had a much better
showing than the prior two years. After the
However, last year’s champions in the
Ladies Cactus League (yes, SSV women)
were outplayed by this year’s winners from
Val Vista Park. We had a good time and a
nice buffet finale, but we didn’t bring home
the gold.
Don’t forget about the Friday night allcomers
games. They are really fun. With the
season winding down, there will probably be room for everyone to play.
SSV Golf Club Emergency Plan
By: Eldon Junkermeier
STAY AS CALM AS POSSIBLE
Carry a cell phone FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY!!!
Dial 911 – Indicate location (SSV Golf Course); name of course (San Tan, Superstition, Four
Peaks); hole number; and whether near tee or green; and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS OF 911
OPERATOR.
In case of chest pains, have someone call Club House Pro Shop (480-984-4209) and ask that
they bring the AED (Defibrillator) to the scene immediately. Start CPR, if possible. It is
better to do chest compressions rather than doing nothing at all.
If possible, have someone go to the nearest point of entry with a cart to help EMT team get to
victim. Members should allow the EMT team the use of their cart(s) to haul equipment and
transport team members to the scene. We do not want the big fire truck stuck on the course
and delay the rescue.
For heat stroke, get the victim out of direct heat and cool the victim down with a cool substance
or towel. Give the victim a cool non-alcoholic beverage.
For a bleeding injury, apply and maintain direct pressure firmly over the bleeding area.
In ALL cases, use common sense.

Sunland Springs Village Homeowners Association (SSVHOA) Annual Meeting
Sign-In 6:00 PM, Start 6:30PM Wednesday, February 27, 2013
Sunland Springs Village Auditorium
2240 S Springwood Ave, Mesa, Arizona
Present: - SSVHOA Board Chairman and Farnsworth Corporation President- Craig
Ahlstrom
- SSVHOA Board member Jeff Decker (Vice President of Farnsworth)
- Rossmar & Graham President - Jason Proudfit
- Rossmar & Graham Vice President – Kirk Kowieski
- SSVHOA Manager John Lippert of Rossmar & Graham
Absent: SSVHOA Board member and Secretary/Treasurer David Palmer (who is
also the Chief Financial Officer for Farnsworth.)
A quorum of residents was present, as verified by the Rossmar & Graham Community
Association Management Company.
The Sunland Springs Village Homeowners Annual meeting was called to order at
6:30 PM by Craig Ahlstrom, Chairman of the HOA, and President of the Farnsworth
Development Company. Mr. Ahlstrom welcomed everyone and thanked them for their
continued support of their HOA. He announced that proper meeting notice was given in
accordance with the Arizona legal statutes for a meeting and confirmed that a quorum of
10 percent of HOA members was present. Owners of 234 units were present exceeding the
total minimum quorum requirement. He reported that earlier the 2012 meeting minutes
had been published in the SSV Village Voice, made available on the SSV internet site
and were posted on the HOA office bulletin board. A motion was made to approve the
2012 minutes and the motion seconded. Motion carried and the minutes were accepted.
Mr. Ahlstrom introduced Mr. Jason Proudfit of Rossmar & Graham’s (RMG). Mr.Proudfit
said how much RMG appreciates the relationship it has with the residents of Sunland
Springs Village. He noted the wonderful job that John Lippert does as HOA manager
and the exemplarily nature of SSV. He also acknowledged a personal accomplishment
of John Lippert’s. John became a Certified Manager of Community Associations. SSV
has teamed with RMG for over 12 years and RMG looks forward to continuing this
valued relationship. In noting the extremely good history of the SSVHOA Accounts
Receivables he said less than 5 of 2100 units needed to be sent to collection. RMG
continues to look for ways to help the community and continues to upgrade its services,
most recently with paperless transactions, SurePay and E statements. RMG has three
goals. They are 1) Fiscal Management of vendor relationships, budgets and funds; 2)
protecting and preserving community common areas and their values; 3) build a sense
of community. SSV is a very attractive place to build, live and buy. Mr. Ahlstrom then
thanked RMG for its partnership with Farnsworth going back over 40 years.
Janet West SSV Activity Director was not able to attend the meeting, but Mr. Ahlstrom
pointed out that two jobs he would never want are those of John Lippert as Community
Manager and Janet’s as Activity Manager. He thanked them for all they do.
Mr. Ahlstrom explained the current membership of the SSVHOA Board. They are
Dave Palmer, SSVHOA Board member and Secretary/Treasurer of the Farnsworth
Corporation, Jeff Decker, Vice President of the HOA, and himself, Craig Ahlstrom,
SSVHOA Chairman and Farnsworth Corporation President, At some point additional
members could be added to the board and it will be turned over to the homeowners,
but for now the seven committees of the Advisory Group are learning what it takes to
manage a large community like SSV and ‘advising’ the Board on the preferences of the
homeowners. It is the goal of Farnsworth to have a seamless transition to a ‘resident
only board’ over the next few years.
The Advisory board consists of 7 Committee chairs with 5-9 committee members each,
serving for 2 years and there is a two term limit. Then you must take a one year break
from that particular committee, but you are welcome to join another committee. Ninety
to 95% of all committee recommendations are implemented. If you are interested in
volunteering on a committee you can get an application at the Activity office or see
John Lippert for one.
Craig also acknowledged the many volunteers that help keep SSV such a great place
to live and play. Year’s ago it was calculated that over $50,000 a year in labor cost is
contributed by the various volunteers. The groups include the Table and Chairs Committee,
the Activity Office Volunteers, the Bingo and Softball volunteers, pool monitors,
Village Voice newsletter staff, the Holiday light display and so many other folks. The
savings now are probably way higher than the original estimate.
Annual Advisory Committee Chairperson’s reports
The current committee chairs provided an overview and update on their committee’s
work. The committees choose their chairperson and that person represents their committee
on the Advisory Board. The Advisory Board meets monthly. There are almost
60 volunteers participating in the Advisory Board Committees.
Committee Reports:
Architect Committee: Chairman Ralph Stokes first recognized the members of the
committee: Karen Bulkley, Helen Denney, Laurie Gordon, Joan Jallen, Jim Thibodeau,
Bob Turner and himself, Ralph Stokes. Two new members joining the group in March
are John Martz and Becky Burch. The purpose of the Architecture committee is to
give approval for architectural requests submitted by the home owner; to encourage
residents to follow the standards set forth in the Architectural Control Policy Manual
and to encourage homeowners to get architectural approval BEFORE starting a project.
The challenge for the group in coming years is to keep up with the continued growth
of the community and still provide architectural guidance to those of us that have lived
here for many years. Mr. Stokes thanked the homeowners for following the control
policy manual and making their job easier. The committee meets twice a month and
have reviewed over 180 requests in the last 3 months.
Building Committee
Chairman Dave Latta, recognized his fellow committee members: Jim Palfini (Recorder),
Pete Crocenzi, Joe Ricci, Sherlan Baker, John Baxter, Fred Kramer, Rod Hoflick and
Kathy Thompson. Four of the current members are leaving due to term limits. You
are encouraged to apply for the open committee positions. The Building Committee
performs building inspections to identify items that require repair or replacement. The
committee reviews new projects and objectives for content and cost. The committee
acts as an initial reviewer for certain building related projects prior to submission to the
Advisory board. In 2012 the Committee performed building inspections and reporting,
oversaw the poolroom carpeting and the new Kiln Room Exhaust system installation.
They also provided a SanTan Construction Punch list and follow up compliance review.
The group’s continuing objective is to provide a supporting role with building inspections
and project reviews.
Communication Committee:
Committee Chairmen Allen Schaeffer said their group is 9 members and 6+ associate
members who volunteer additional specialty skills. Their Mission is make communications
throughout the Village clear, easy and user friendly. Members are directly involved
with one or more media products during the program year.
1.Auditorium- Bob Gray and Richard Denney, have provided concise procedures for
use of all the electronics - screens, projector/recorder mount, camera) and ‘magic boxes’
backstage. These are here for you (your clubs/orgs) to use. They will be happy to share
their knowledge while, at the same time, certifying you as a user.
2. ssv E-News - one-way information messages are sent to you regarding HOA management
facilities status - pool, spa, streets, trees, grounds, etc. It also provides Activity
Office messages concerning entertainment, shows, trips, games, special events. Sign-up
is in the Activity Office.
3. The SSV Forum is a ‘Blog’, used for general discussion and information from the
residents. It acts as a very successful selling and want ad formum. Lost pets, rainfall,
medical and service providers – these are all discussed on the ‘Forum’.
If you are not a current subscriber of these free services, use the forms available in the
HOA office. We continue to be fortunate to have resident and former committee chair
Harlan Steinle acting as the moderator/monitor for this very active venue. Committee
member Jane Harrel is liaison for both the E-News and the Forum
4. Our first class newspaper is the VILLAGE VOICE under the guidance of the subcommittee
headed by Joann Chapin. The newspaper is under the editorial leadership
of Jane Harrel. It exists both in print and electronic form, with archived copies on our
web site going back to July, 2009. You can read current and back copies wherever you
can sign on to a computer. The Village Voice is free of charge to you due to advertising
in the paper.
4. Channel 22: The system hardware is provided by Cox but Committee member Phil
Plato has transformed the channel from just a collection of slides. It now is a more
dynamic medium with shorter ad turnarounds, humor, quizzes, and – for the visuallyimpaired
– voice-over advertisements, He recently created video announcements for
Men’s breakfast and pickle ball and has recognized special occasions. If you have original
ideas for an ad for your club/org, see Phil.
5. The HOA website activity specifics, meeting data, club/org information, advertising
pages, the Village Voice archive and, of course the FREE interactive Classified Ad section.
Committee member Ron Neuman updates the web page data on a timely basis. If
you’ve missed seeing some data recently, the site is currently undergoing a cosmetic
and performance update. Mark Wittig joins the committee this year focusing on web
development and paper reduction. This is a great source of information during the Summer
session to see what is going on in the Village.
6. Although the Village phone directory is not yet available from the printer, we’ll notify
you when they arrive. Jere Barcellina has edited every entry for errors and redundancy.
The cover photo feature is a splendid view of the Auditorium, courtesy of Bob Card.
The directory is FREE to SSV residents, 1 per physical residence owned. CAVEAT:
In spite of all our best efforts, some data will not appear in this new issue due to the
publishing cutoff date. But no one will be held hostage for an entire year by an arbitrary
date. After you’ve received the directory and had a reasonable chance to review it, give
the desired changes to the HOA office (in the form of a ‘green sheet’). We produce a
continuously-updated and printed supplement of all changes from this printing to the
next. This supplement works great. What’s more, it’s FREE in the HOA office.
7. In other areas, our wi-fi demands continue to increase such as with the new SanTan
Center. Thanks to Dick Simmon and Computer Club member Jim Palfini for their help.
Several other residents who provide help with email information and specialty referral
listings are Brian Bender and Mark Wittig. Jan Jelley has provided a comprehensive
procedural guideline for the Activity Office.
If you have any tactical experience as a writer, editor, photographer, proofreader, in
public relations, in data entry / update, in electronics or have computer-based skills
(especially with the web), then we welcome your help either as a committee member or
– your option – as an associate member. Volunteers really do make our community hum.
Landscape Committee: Chairman Jerry Nelson acknowledged the committee members
for the 2012-2013 season: Terry Steinkruger, Gerald Busiman, Ed Brunkhorst, Robert
Myers, Mary Catherine Myers, Jim Smith and Emmitt Kirscht. They ensure that the
Master Association Landscaped areas are in the best possible condition. This is accomplished
by monitoring and identifying problems and recommending repairs and
enhancements. They try to maintain a standard for the community that makes our village
an attractive place to live. Each committee member has an assigned common area of the
village and monitors it on a routine basis and reports any problems or areas of concern.
This past year the HOA took over maintenance of the property east of the Village wall
on the proposed Meridian line. The opening of roads from Guadalupe to Springwood
added to the committee’s responsibility this past fall. Landscaping is influenced by the
weather conditions. We do have frost, heavy rains, wind and rain and drought concerns.
Three members have left the committee this past season and they do need to be replaced.
There is no digging, weeding, cutting or work involved. Volunteer positions do require
observation and reporting. Jerry asked that residents please consider volunteering to
help the Landscape Committee.
Finance Committee: Chairman Doy Gillespie acknowledged the Finance Committee
members: Fran Davidson, Gene Lutter, Joe Treece, and, Bob Nielsen. Burt Marcus and
Max Warren will be leaving at the end of the month due to term limitations.
Doy then presented the highlights of 2012 Financial Statements distributed early in
the meeting. The HOA was almost self sufficient in 2012 as the Farnsworth subsidy
was only $10,100. The 2013 Budget calls for no Builder Subsidy. The HOA received
a $70,222 rebate from Cox because of the many bundled services of the residents and
because of the contract with Cox where we also enjoy a 40% reduction on the cost of
basic cable. Operating expenses in 2012 were $1,158,000. The Reserve Fund which
provides for long-term updates and replacements of assets has a very good 98% funding
rate or $1,089,000 balance. Reserve expenditures for the 2012 were $48,054. An
update will be made in April to the Reserve Study and will include all the new properties
at the SanTan Center.
The Village Enhancement Fund consists of profits from activities and various commissions
from Terra Travel, the newspaper, re-cycled paper and other sources. These funds
along with Bingo funds; individual Clubs monies and labor from various groups helped
provide the; Re-circulating hot water heaters for the North Pool; the exhaust fan for the
kiln room; 3 additional AED’s for the SanTan complex; updated and new pool signage
and Christmas decorations among other projects. Bingo has provided over $150,000
to the community projects since it started six years ago. Softball pays for its field
maintenance and equipment; Tennis is spending over $20,000 to cover the equipment
at the new SanTan courts and even the smallest groups or clubs contribute to various
Village improvements. The Village Enhancement fund had a balance of $62,111 and
the Capital Projects Funds had a total of $185,422.
The 2013 Budget closely tracks the 2012 Actual Expenses “except” for the addition of 6
more months of cost to operate the SanTan Recreational complex for the full year of 2013.
Recreational Facilities Committee (RFC): Chairman Max Tiede thanked his fellow
committee members Carol Boots, Mavis Carver, Connie Gonzalez, Jerry Mason, Angie
Reiter, Ambrose Reschny, Chris Stricklett, and Deena Warren for their efforts during the
past year. Special thanks to Carol Boots and Deena Warren who are leaving due to term
limits and to Mavis Carver who has moved from SSV. He welcomed new members,
W. Dale Miller, Marti Voss, and Jennifer Wittick.
The RFC assesses current and projected needs of the recreational facilities. This includes
the Springwood and San Tan Complex fitness centers, the swimming facilities, tennis
courts, softball field, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, bocce ball, pickle ball courts and the
dog park/picnic area. In the past year the group supported and approved:
Installation of hot water re-circulating pumps for the showers at the Springwood and
San Tan swimming pools
Development and installation of improved signage for the Springwood and San Tan
activity complexes
Approval of storage facilities expansion for the softball field
Continued review, update and maintenance of the pool areas and fitness centers
Installation of storage cubbies and clothes hanging fixtures for the San Tan fitness center
Approval of water aerobics at San Tan swimming pool
Approval for installation of window tinting, mirrors for the west wall, and addition of
a stretch bench for the San Tan fitness center
Approval for additional tables, bike racks, chairs and bleachers for San Tan complex
He reminded residents that additional facilities and equipment are available for the Village
such as the Picnic area by the Dog Park, and sports equipment that can be checked
out at the Activity office. The committee will continue to be busy this year to monitor
and improve the SSV recreational facilities. There will be committee openings next
year for those interested.
Security Committee: Chairman Ed Leahy acknowledged the work of his committee
which includes; Howard Littell, Terry Bahnub, Robert Klein, Joe Camporese, William
Shea, and Richard Wood.
Ed emphasized that the committee’s main purpose is to PROMOTE SECURITY. We
are fortunate to live in a low crime area, but he said the enemy of security is a “sense of
security”. We should always be vigilant. When seconds count, police are only minutes
away. We need more Block Watch Captains for our new home areas and for existing
locations. You can get more information from the Activity Office to sign up for your area.
The Security Committee and the HOA is sponsoring An Ice Cream Social for Security,
a presentation by the Mesa Police Department and exhibits by Security Equipment
Suppliers on Wed. March 13 at 6PM in the SSV Auditorium. There will be ice cream,
a short presentation, and raffles from the exhibitors and Farnsworth.
Presidents Report:
Craig Ahlstrom thanked the committees for all their presentations and said he sometimes
forgets all the work that they do. But we should all appreciate it. Craig then shared
Ross Farnsworth’s greetings to all. Craig reminded everyone to get their ticket for
next week’s annual BBQ.
Nearly 2100 units are closed now. 111 sold last year and we are already ahead of last
year’s sales pace. The SanTan center is doing well as well as homes in the Unit 7 phase
2 area. Ground has been broken for 94 new townhomes just west of the Pro Shop driving
range, new models will be ready by the end of the year. The Summit Memory Care
is open. Plans for Phase II with the Assisted Living center are underway. Farnsworth
anticipates a 90-100 unit, three story building to open in 2015. For more information
check the website www.TheSummitAZ.com.
The Arizona Dept. of Transportation (ADOT) is sending flyers for input from residents
to the opening of the Meridian Corridor on our east side. John will send a copy of it on
the Enews so every can participate. Craig has offered the Auditorium or Superstition
Room as a public meeting site. The State of Arizona, City of Mesa and Apache Junction
and the counties of Maricopa and Pinal will all be involved.
Exterior signage identifying the SanTan complex has been ordered.
Craig said he has been asked if the Golf Course is for sale. He said there are no such
plans at this time, but Farnsworth is in the real estate business and things could change
in the future. He said Farnsworth did sell the Sunland Village and Sunland East Village
golf courses to respective group of residents that formed a golf club. If a SSV
group wants to talk about it, Farnsworth will be here. The Farnsworth group does own
golf courses and still owns the Dreamland course. It would be the highest priority of
Farnsworth, if they were to sell, that it be to residents. The HOA would not be buying
it. Again Craig emphasized that at present time the course is not being sold, but they
would entertain interest in the future.
Questions and Comments:
The meeting was open for comments or questions. Craig noted that if you have a particular
question about your home or its construction to take those to the Construction
Office. If we don’t know the answer to your question this evening we will find out for
you and let you know later.
Question: Can we get a pedestrian crossing marked at the Guadalupe intersections?
- John will check with the city.
Question: Last year we asked for an additional handicap ramp at the Auditorium and
more parking, thank you for the ramp, but what about the parking?
-Craig noted that besides the ramp, 3 additional handicap spaces were added. If we still
need more, the request can be made to the Building Committee.
Question: With 94 more townhomes being added, is there going to be an entrance and
exit directly to Signal Butte or will all the traffic continue to come through Monte and
Wattlewood. -Craig said an emergency road access will be developed for police and
fire access to Signal Butte, but there are no plans for regular traffic. Craig did note that
residents need to watch their road speed across the Village, that if we have a speeding
problem, it is not just the construction trucks.
Question: Who bought the other golf courses?
- Craig said that 500 individuals at Sunland East Village bought that location as a golf
club.
There being no more questions or comments, a motion was made to adjourn the meeting
and seconded, approved unanimously.
Meeting adjourned at 7:49 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Paul Njaa (that’s Paul “Knee-Ya”, or, as he says, it sounds like Cal- i - for
-NEE –YAH) was a hospital pharmaceutical sales representative. His job
brought him to Arizona where he met his wife Sandy. They both enjoy tennis
at SSV and mountain hiking.
It was a surprise to me that Paul also enjoys cooking. His daughter has
access to the Miami, Florida, newspaper which is famous for their food section.
Periodically, she sends new and unusual recipes to Paul so that he can add to
his repertoire of great dishes. The following recipe for Marinated Shrimp is
very unusual from the standard shrimp and dip. Actually, the shrimp doesn’t
“marinate” until serving time. Give it a try at the next gathering. And, by the way, no matter
how you pronounce Njaa, Paul is a great guy.
Marinated Shrimp
¼ C chili sauce or ketchup
2 T mustard
1 T horseradish
2 T lemon juice
1 T hot sauce
1 T extra virgin olive oil
2 T capers
3 cloves garlic chopped fine
2 T cilantro
Mix and refrigerate.
Before serving, combine sauce with 1 pound chilled, cooked shrimp.
Serve with crackers.
Barringer serve as pastors. Springs Chapel is
a non-denominational, Bible-based ministry.
Following worship services attendees are invited
to stay and fellowship with friends and
neighbors and enjoy complimentary rolls and
coffee. Communion is offered the first Sunday
of each month.
While not a full-fledged church, Springs
Chapel does offer opportunities to participate
in a mixed choir, men’s breakfasts, Christian
women’s reading groups, and special social
events sponsored by the Chapel. The Chapel
choir is under the direction of Judy Herr, and
practice is held on Wednesday of each week
at 4:45 PM. Chapel men meet once a month
On Being Sociable
for Security
By Ed Leahy, Chairman, SSV HOA Security
Committee
On March 13 we held our first Ice Cream
Social for Security. The results were very
gratifying. For current members of a SSV block
watch if 50% of their group attended together
they got credit for one of their two recommended
yearly neighborhood meetings.
In the years since the establishment of the
Neighborhood Watch program here, SSV is
considered a low crime area, but, in order to
keep it that way, it’s important that we continue
doing the things that keep us secure--like never
forgetting that security begins at home. More
importantly, the only requirement for maintaining
an active Block Watch is getting to know
your neighbors. The recommended solution to
that is two parties a year where at least 50% of
the Neighborhood Watch group attends.
Of course our Neighborhood Watch program
is a Mesa P.D. program. In addition, the
Mesa P.D. provides each group monthly crime
stats for the area. They also warn us of developing
trends like a recent rash of bicycle thefts in
the surrounding area.
We say security begins at home because
preventing break ins is the best way to remain
a low crime rate. At SSV we are doing exactly
that. Keep up the good work. If you’re not in
a Neighborhood watch, for information about
how to join the program, email Karen Stegenga
of Mesa P.D. at karen.stegenga@mesaaz.gov or,
call 480-644-5014.
Village Talent Showcased
At “Mental Release”
Variety Show
By: Judy Allen
Over 300 Village residents enjoyed a fun-filled Saturday
evening, March 9. The Karaoke Club sponsored the MENTAL
RELEASE variety show that featured Karaoke Club members
at their best (really?!) Master of Ceremony, John McAteer
introduced acts that ranged from great accordion solos by Fred
Neumuller to Ray Wiebe singing Little Sister.
The spotlight shined brightly as Terry O’Rourke, Jerry
Pointer and Ray Groom tried to convince the Coach to put
them in the game—even at Centerfield. SSV Dancing Ladies
brought the house down with their designer fashions. Where
do you suppose Lyn Mineo, Ann Schubert, Ronnie Cohen,
Linda McAteer and Linda Desario will wear their incredible
frocks again? Does Dillard’s custom make undergarments
for entertainers? Classical music was featured as Bob Klein,
Gerry Moss, Bruce Miller, Joe Fellhauer and Bob Neilson
“danced” to Swan Lake. You gotta love those “tutus” and
skinny legs. Classical ballet will never be the same.
The second half of the program featured Karaoke singing
by various members who were assisted by great audience
participation. Virginia and Dave Wolf had a wonderful time
leading California Dreaming and Big Spender. The event
ended as all Karaoke Parties end—the entire cast and audience
stood and sang God Bless the USA!
Thank you to everyone who attended this “star-studded”
event. Thanks to all the cast and crew for working so hard
to produce the program. Special thanks to Doris Havelka for
her direction. What fun!
Come join us at one of our monthly Karaoke Parties on
the first Friday of every month in the San Tan Center. Doors
open at 6:30 PM on April 5, May 3 and June 7. The March
party included 80 of our friends and neighbors. Everyone is
welcome to sing, laugh, and just enjoy. See you there!
Ceramics Club
By: Mary Burke
We are having a great time every week in the Four Peaks
room creating beautiful objet d’art. There is always room for
one more and we invite you to join us to share your knowledge
or to learn a new skill.
We offer a variety of classes through April including the
very popular horsehair technique and other specialty techniques
as well as a couple of old favorites. Let us know if you
would like to learn something special, and we will try to set
up a class for it. There is always someone to help with basic
understanding of how to clean greenware and to advise the
correct brushes and paints to use for the correct application.
In addition to our huge selection of paints and other pottery
essentials, we have low-fire clay, slump molds and tools for
your use to create your own unique piece.
The SSV Ceramics Club holds open sessions and classes
in the Four Peaks room on a regular schedule throughout the
year: Monday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Tuesday
and Thursday from 9:00 AM to 300 PM. Formal classes are
usually held on Thursday unless otherwise noted. In addition
to a yearly membership fee ($20), a very modest session fee
($2.00) gives you access to all supplies and firings.
Examples of our work and the current class schedule can
be seen in the Four Peaks room. For additional information,
please contact JoAnne Chapin at 480-380-2302.
Bible Study
By: Ardella Burtman
A community Bible study is held every Friday morning
at 9 AM in the Superstition Room. Everyone is welcome to
attend. This is an interdenominational study, open to men and
women. We are careful to keep the class to one hour. There
is no charge for the class and no book to buy – the Bible is
our study guide with use of commentaries by trusted Christian
writers. Bring any translation of the Bible you prefer to use.
The Bible study continues throughout the summer
months. The only days during the year the group does not meet
are official holidays, such as the 4th of July, Christmas Day,
etc. We do not adhere to a strict schedule with our classes,
but proceed as time and comments permit.
Beginning the first of February, Pastor Tom Weitzel, a
Sunland Springs winter resident, began a series of studies
entitled, “Getting To Know You: A Study of the Nature and
Attributes of God.” Come and hear what Pastor Tom has to
teach us about the difference between having knowledge of
God and getting to know God personally. Pastor Tom has a
Masters in Divinity from Bethel Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota,
and served as a pastor for 20 years in Iowa and Colorado.
He and his wife, Ann, are winter residents of SSV and Pastor
Tom serves as a pastor during the summer months while at
their summer residence in Estes Park, Colorado.
Pastor Weitzel’s class on the attributes of God will run
through the April 12. Following his class, Sylvia Hansen
will teach a series from a book of the Old Testament, yet to
be decided.
You are invited to join us for our Friday Bible studies.
Even though you may miss some classes, you are welcome
to come. Naturally, there is some building of content one
class on the next, but also, in a sense, each class stands alone.
If you have any questions about the Bible Study, please
call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102. We would love to
have you join us.
Pickle Ball
By: Linda McAteer
February 22 was the
first ever Sunland Springs
Village Pickle Ball Club
Fun Day, and you can be
certain that this will be a
reoccurring event. The day
began at 8 AM with match
play on the new courts at the
San Tan Recreation Complex.
Coffee and donuts
were served while players
tested their skills against
other club members in a
series of leveled matches.
Play continued until 11 AM
when a hot dog lunch was
ready for over 40 players,
many family members and
fans of the players.
That evening the Club held a dance with a capacity crowd
in the San Tan Room. Folks from throughout the community
danced the night away to Yesteryear, shared snacks; and
bragged about the morning’s match results.
This was the first fund raiser for the Club, and we would
like to thank Judy Hooyenga for organizing the Fun Day match
Computer Club
By: Jane Harrel, President
Things are winding down in the Computer Club, but we
have had an exciting year what with the release of Windows
8 and all the new Apple phones and apps. After seeing Windows
8 demonstrated, I rushed out and bought one. It’s a big
learning curve, but you eventually get the hang of it.
Our class schedule is over for the year but that doesn’t
mean we stop teaching. If you are a year round resident,
keep your eyes on notices about our twice a month meetings
from May through September. The summer months are
more relaxed and we have the time to demonstrate various
software and maintenance. We will meet at 10:00 AM in the
Superstition Room on the first and third Wednesdays from
May through September.
We still have some great programs available for you in
April. They include:
April 03 Business Meeting: Year in review: Functional leaders
April 10 Windows 8 - Steve Heyer
April 17 Using Search Engines
April 24 End of Year Party??
All members have been very diligent in wearing their
name tags this year resulting in very little in the slush fund,
but we will still endeavor to have a party.
See you every Wednesday in April at 10:00 AM in the
SAN TAN ROOMS.
TAC Quilters
By: Ann Owens, Secretary
The SSV TAC quilters had another successful Quilt Show
with 77 quilts on display. This was not the largest number
we have ever had, but our horizontal space was probably the
most. There were so many of the larger quilts that we didn’t
have room to display some of our “mystery quilt tops.” We
can watch for the completed efforts at the next show. The
quilters will now all be thinking of what to show for next year.
Our quilt show coordinator stated, “Every quilt showed how
much we all enjoy the art of quilting.”
We hope that you made it over to see the works of many
busy and creative hands, as there was quite a variety of different
techniques. Last month’s TAC article had a picture of
a hand applique quilt done by Linda Nelson, quite a beautiful
quilt!
Some upcoming classes are free motion quilting; we will
also have charity quilts working days. The pattern for the
2014 quilt has been selected, so there will be “mini-sewing
bees” to work on that.
Don’t miss the community sewing bee on April 13. This
is open to anyone wishing to help make comfort quilts for
kids. Various kinds of jobs are available; you can help in any
number of ways. Come join us.
Writers Club
By: Nan Miller
If you like to see your words on paper or computer, talent
level doesn’t matter, you will want to check out the SSV Writers
Club. This very friendly support group of over a dozen
writers meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month
in the Summit Room from 10 AM to noon.
This month our sessions are the April 4 and 18.
The SSV Writers Club ranges from novices to those
who have published books. Some enjoy composing nonfiction
while others concentrate on fiction. Anyone who has an
interest in writing or wants to improve their craft is always
welcome. Emphasis is on writing not business. We continue
to charge no fees or dues.
We decide each time on a brief exercise to compose
between sessions, and then we share our words. Those who
prefer to bring a piece they are working on are welcome to do
so. Those seeking critiques should bring copies of their work
so they can receive written comments of others.
A half hour is devoted to craft improvement. Our coordinator,
Nan Miller, a professional travel writer, and others who
have teaching backgrounds, conduct this part of our session.
If you would like to learn what the present assignment
is, or if you would like to attend our group, call Nan at (480)
984-1852. We hope to see you there.
Arizona Blanket 4
Kids
By: Linda Schuler
April 13 the SSV Thread Arts Centers hosts an Arionza
Blankets 4 Kids Quilting Bee in the Auditorium from 9 AM
to 3 PM.
This annual event in our community is open to everyone
who wants to help make comfort quilts for kids. You do not
need to be a quilter or seamstress to participate.
We provide morning coffee and snacks, plus door prizes
and a 50/50 raffle just for coming and helping with any of the
assembly tasks. Lunch will be available for $6.
Vagabond Club News
By: Judith and Wayne Konz Terra Travel 984-5782 wakjak@cox.net
On March 30 a group of 69 vagabonds headed to Los
Angeles to board the Sapphire Princess for a seven night
cruise of the California Coast. We celebrated Easter aboard
the cruise with neighbors and friends.
March 28 will be the last day that the travel desk will be
open in the Conference Room for the season, but please call
us at home or e-mail us for any travel plans with which you
need help.
Terra Travel and Princess Cruises will have a cruise sale
April 3 – 17. During this time you can book any Princess
cruise and your deposit will only be $100 per person. This is
the perfect time to book the April 1, 2014 Hawaii, Tahiti and
Samoa 29 day sailing aboard the Golden Princess. This will
be a wonderful tropical voyage with warm weather, beautiful
sights and maybe even some hula girls! Your deposit is
refundable till final payment time. We will take a motorcoach
roundtrip to the ship if we have 40 passengers.
Azamara Club Cruises has now included many amenities
on its voyages such as all gratuities, all spirits in their bars,
wine, beer and all soft drinks at lunch and dinner, self-service
laundry and shuttle service to ports. They are even including
one very special evening excursion with each cruise. We have
group space on two exciting cruises in June, 2014. On June
14 cruise the Norwegian Fjords and North Cape and on June
28 cruise to the Baltic Sea and St. Petersburg, Russia. Or stay
on the ship and combine both of these cruises for a fantastic
voyage. The ship only has 670 passengers and we will not be
able to hold this group space long. You don’t have to fly from
Phoenix, we can book your air from anywhere.
Remember that the Sunland Springs Village Enhancement
fund receives a portion of our commission for any trip
that you book with us, and has received over $61,000 in the
last five years!
Genealogy Club
By: Judi Taylor.
April will be our last Genealogy Meeting for this season.
It will be on Monday, April 1 at 7:00 PM. Michelle Goodrum
will be speaking on “LAND RECORDS,” which is sometimes
a useful way to help us find an ancestor for whom it has been
difficult to get information.
We will start up again in the fall on November 4. We
welcome everyone, beginners and advanced family searchers.
There are no dues, but we do ask for a dollar donation to give
to the speakers to pay for their gas. If there is a special topic
or speaker you would like to hear, please email me and let me
know (nano2back@gmail.com).
Have a good summer and have wonderful finds to report
on in November. Thanks for all of your support this year.
