Board and staff members sit on committees relevant<br />

to CSAHS’s activities. These are:<br />

• The Finance and Budget Committee, chaired by<br />

Maria Pethard, makes recommendations<br />

about budget allocation and financial performance.<br />

• The Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory<br />

Committee, chaired by Prof John Young, recommends<br />

all CSAHS medical and dental appointments.<br />

• The CSAHS Audit Committee, chaired by Gwynn<br />

Boyd, oversees matters arising from internal and<br />

external audit reviews.<br />

• Ethics Review committees, with the RPA committee<br />

chaired by Dr Robert Loblay, Concord Hospital’s by<br />

Dr Sue Liew and the UDH committee by Dr Susan<br />

Buchanan to December 1999 and Dr Barbara Taylor<br />

from January 2000.<br />

• The Clinical Quality Council was established in<br />

September 1999 and makes recommendations on<br />

quality of service. It is chaired by Prof John Young.<br />

A working group was set up to act on issues raised<br />

by the council.<br />

EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT<br />

A team of seven is responsible for the management<br />

of CSAHS, and works closely with the senior staff<br />

of each facility and clinical group.<br />

Chief Executive Officer<br />

Dr Diana Horvath AO MB, BS (Syd), MHP, (U<strong>NSW</strong>),<br />

FRACMA, FAFPHM, FCHSE<br />

The CEO is accountable to <strong>NSW</strong> <strong>Health</strong> for the<br />

facilities and services of CSAHS. The 10 hospitals,<br />

health programs, extensive teaching and research<br />

units provide healthcare to central <strong>Sydney</strong>’s<br />

population, some 480,000 people. CSAHS has an<br />

annual turnover of more than $776 million and<br />

employs 8,700 staff, responsible for 135,000<br />

inpatients and 1.8 million outpatient treatments<br />

each year.<br />

Director of <strong>Health</strong> Services<br />

Dr Greg Stewart MB, BS, MPH (Syd), FRACMA, FAFPHM<br />

The director of <strong>Health</strong> Services plans for and assists<br />

the development and integration of health provision<br />

across the 14 clinical groups at CSAHS, with a focus<br />

on outcomes and quality.<br />

Director of Finance<br />

Candy Cheng BComm (U<strong>NSW</strong>), FCPA<br />

The director of Finance ensures that CSAHS’s<br />

available financial resources and assets are managed<br />

equitably, efficiently, and effectively through the<br />

planning, direction, coordination and monitoring of<br />

their use.<br />

Director of <strong>Health</strong> Services Development & Planning<br />

Richard Gilbert BSc (Hons)<br />

The director of <strong>Health</strong> Services Development &<br />

Planning advises on and manages all aspects of<br />

health development and planning including policy<br />

and funding implications.<br />

Director of Corporate Services<br />

Jan Whalan BPharm, MPH, MBA, AFAIM<br />

The director of Corporate Services’ responsibilities<br />

include human resources management; risk<br />

management, occupational health safety and<br />

rehabilitation; procurement and tendering;<br />

management and performance contracts; policy<br />

development; administrative and legal services;<br />

and non-government organisations.<br />

Director of Nursing Services<br />

Prof Joan Englert AM RN, CM, MSc (Soc), BHA, DNA,<br />

COTM, CIC, FCN (<strong>NSW</strong>), FRCNA, FAIM<br />

The director of Nursing Services manages strategic<br />

planning and coordination of nursing provision<br />

across facilities within CSAHS. The position looks<br />

after the Staff Development and Training Network<br />

to meet on-going needs of all employees, and the<br />

quality management of services.<br />

Deputy Chief Executive Officer<br />

Mike Wallace MSc (Soc), BSc<br />

The deputy CEO is responsible for the operational<br />

management of CSAHS and the use of resources<br />

and facilities.<br />
