5 Conclusion
This Status Quo report outlines the current situation
within the PKSLM area, both in terms of a literature
review and the various specialist analyses that were
undertaken. It shows that the PKSLM is presently
subject to a host of competing interests, with ad hoc and
uncoordinated development making overall
management difficult. This in turn contributes to an
increase in conflict between developers, government
and landowners.
While sustainable management of resources is not being
attained at the moment, the process to develop an EMF
for the PKSLM provides a basis to promote the trend
for more environmentally and socially responsible
development, supported by guidelines and incentives.
It can be deduced from the information presented in this
report, PKSLM is experiencing immense pressure
specifically from mining. The lack of an overarching
development vision and guidelines has meant that
development has mostly taken place in an ad hoc and
uncoordinated manner. There is growing concern that
mining activities pose a threat to water resources, air
quality and ecological functioning, while providing job
opportunities and economic development. These
opportunities and constraints need to be balanced in
order to achieve sustainable development of the
PKSLM.
The next phase of the EMF is to determine the vision
for the PKSLM based on the desires of its stakeholders.
This phase will assess the development trends and their
associated threats to the environment as well as the
opportunities and constraints that the environment poses
for development.
