3.1 AGRICULTURE<br />

Traditional agriculture in the IHR is organic by<br />

default, low in the use <strong>of</strong> fossil fuel based inputs<br />

and, therefore, results in lower greenhouse gas<br />

(GHG) emissions. <strong>Himalayan</strong> agriculture is<br />

based on traditional approaches exhibiting close<br />

interdependence among key resources -- land,<br />

livestock, and forests. According to the Central<br />

Statistical Organization (CSO), whereas the total<br />

GVA (gross value added) output <strong>of</strong> agriculture and<br />

allied activities <strong>of</strong> the IHR contribute a mere 3.5%<br />

to the GDP <strong>of</strong> the country (Table 3.1) the figure for<br />

horticulture (fruits and vegetables) is 7.1%.<br />
