o Expansion in training: number of students more than doubled since 1998.
o Applications: typically there are at least 350 applications for places each year
(in 2012 there were over 400 applications). The number of places on the
programme is much smaller than the number of applicants.
o There is a very small dropout rate (currently less than 1% in the history of the
programme); failure rate similarly low.
o Recruitment and retention: nearly all students work in the NHS on qualifying,
the vast majority within the northwest.
o Publications: there are an increasing number of trainees who publish results of
their research, both service-related projects and thesis research. Publications
are collated and made available to all trainees on the programme.
o Innovation: programme staff and trainees have recently edited and contributed
two special editions of journals, Psychology: learning and teaching and Clinical
Psychology Forum. The latter featured examples of trainees’ work on
inclusivity.
