22 CHCOHS501A Manage workplace OHS management systems V1
As a worker and potential manager in the community services and health sectors, you will
be required to have a comprehensive understanding of the OHS regulations, your
employer‟s responsibilities and your own responsibilities in a workplace environment. In
this section you will learn about the state‟s legislation and related policies, and its
application to your workplace. You will be required to participate in the implementation
of legislation and policy as it relates to the development and maintenance of a safe and
healthy workplace. It is suggested that you access websites to gather current data on OHS
Act and Regulation and resources, e.g. Publications and test cases.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is fundamental to the effective and efficient
functioning of all workplaces. It is to the benefit of all in the workplace that OHS
processes are not only adhered to, but also supported and endorsed by the entire work
team. For this to happen, both employers and employees must be part of the process of
creating, sustaining and developing the OHS process.
OHS is more than the application of legal policies and procedures, as set out by the
Occupational Health and Safety Act, 2000 and the WorkCover Occupational Health and
Safety Regulation 2001 (the two main legislative documents that underpin all workplace
OHS issues). OHS must also be promoted as important and beneficial to all workers,
whether permanent, casual or visitors.
