Expectations for the Aladdin Sane album, issued in April 1973, proved impossible to live up to. Bowie was the most talked-about rock star in the world, but the record was mildly denounced as hurried and inconsistent – exactly the qualities that have since
made it more durable than its predecessor. Interspersed between the raids on vintage rock’n’ roll (‘The Jean Genie’, ‘Panic In Detroit’, a version of the Rolling Stones’ ‘Let’s Spend The Night Together’) were nods to the German theatre song tradition (‘Time’), the avantgarde (‘Aladdin Sane’) and galvanised New York rock (‘Cracked Actor’). At a show in New York in February 1973, Bowie made his entrance via a descending cage lit by a single spotlight and with revolving mirrored globes on either side. What followed was a typically controlled performance with Bowie returning in sixinch heels for a finale of ‘Rock’n’Roll Suicide’. But he hadn’t reckoned on a fan leaping onto the stage and planting a kiss on his cheek. Bowie fainted, fell to the ground and was hastily carried off, leaving the audience wondering whether it had just witnessed the death of Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane. Or even David Bowie. Whoever he was, he lived on, at least until that night in July 1973 when Bowie retired Ziggy/Aladdin and quite possibly himself.
