Bowie became fascinated with Robert L. Heinlein’s
Stranger In A Strange Land during his months spent
touring Aladdin Sane. He described the book’s
central character, Michael Valentine Smith, as “a
peace and love messenger from another planet”,
and claimed he was about to land the role in a
forthcoming film. In fact Smith was a power-fixated
alien whose fantasies of creating a religious
movement end when he is beaten to death by an
angry crowd. Any film idea was, in the book’s argot,
quickly “discorporated”.
